8 Aiken, Conrad. SELECTED POEMS.
New York Charles Scribner's Sons 1929 First, limited edition. Hard Cover Fair Signed by Author
361 pp, 8 1/2" H. Green cloth spine with gilt lettering/decorative banding, patterned paper-covered boards. *Lacking the publisher's slipcase.* No. 3 of 210 copies, numbered and signed by Conrad Aiken on the limitation page. Aiken was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for 'Selected Poems' in 1930. Inscribed on the front free endpaper: "For Adrianne / on the way to / Hollywood / from / Philip Merivale / March : 1932". Philip Merivale was born in India, began his acting and screenwriting career in England, later moving to Los Angeles. This book is from the library of the actor Raymond Massey and we presume the 'Adrianne' of the dedication was Massey's first wife, Adrianne Allen (m.1929-1939). Ms. Allen is perhaps best known for her role in Noel Coward's 'Private Lives'. Following her divorce from Massey, Ms. Allen married American lawyer, William Dwight Whitney (and Massey married Whitney's ex-wife). In 1957 she joined her daughter, Anna Massey and Philip Merivale's son, John Merivale, in the Broadway production "The Reluctant Debutante", playing Sheila Broadbent, mother of the character played by Anna. Many pages have not been opened and others have rough edges from opening, several edge tears (archivally taped) or pieces missing from margins/corners between pages 329 & 336 - no text missing, age darkening to edges of text block - especially top of text block, moderate to heavy edge wear to boards - more at corners, browning to spine, light browning and some thin brown stains on boards, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, line dent across bottom of text block, small bump at top edge of rear board.

168 pp, small 4to (10 1/4" H). B&w and colour photographs and reproductions. "This collection is based on the life's work of David Ashe, who while employed as a draftsperson with the Town of Oakville compiled a listing of legal survey plans and registry information on the streets of Oakville. Being a researcher at heart, he went further and spent countless hours of his spare time gathering the history behind Oakville's streets. Joyce Burnell has picked a selection of Ashe's street histories and has added several Oakville landmarks - some of which are not longer here. Add to this, interesting archival images - some never before seen - combined with newer colour photographs and you have an intriguing reflection of Oakville's unique history. With close to 100 street name histories and over 40 landmarks featured, these interesting vignettes make for an easy, enjoyable read. "Nothing captures the spirit of the Old West better than the jaunty tunes and classic ballads the cowboys and settlers sang, songs richly represented in this visually stunning volume. Panoramic in scope, the 45 songs, coupled with works of art from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, Cody, Wyoming, chronicle the stirring saga of westward expansion and reflect every facet of life during one of the most exciting periods in our nation's history. The lore of the West intrigued many artists, and the works featured include paintings and sculpture by Frederic Remington, Charles M. Russell, and N.C. Wyeth, as well as a myriad of fascinating artifacts: saddles, spurs, guns, guitars, a stagecoach ticket, a Navajo blanket, and other objects that provide a vivid picture of life in the West. A lively and intriguing text further illuminates this bygone world, exploring the history of the songs, their lyrics, the accompanying art, and the development of the West. The music, arranged for beginning to intermediate musicians and accompanied by chords for the guitar or banjo, is suitable for piano, organ, violin, or recorder." 202 pp, lg 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w drawings, music notation. Bilingual lyrics (French/English), remainder of text English only. "Marius Barbeau has collected here forty-two jongleur and voyageur songs which he recorded between 1916 and 1925 from folksingers along the St. Lawrence River. These are still sung, mostly in the Province of Quebec, but are also well known to emigrant French-Canadians throughout New England, northern Michigan and Louisiana. In addition to the melodies and complete French texts of the songs, Dr. Barbeau has included singable interpretations (not literal translations) in English. Of interest to laymen and folklorists alike are his commentaries on each song - where it was recorded, its history, uses, and versions known in France - as well as a list of references and sources for each." Tiny area of wear at top corner of rear board, tiny pen mark/dint at fore-edge of pages 86-90, small soft wrinkle at fore-edge of allpages up to page 10, diagonal line impression from rear pastedown on last few pages. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling, three tiny closed tears with creases, light fading to spine color, tiny scuff on spine, light rubbing and soiling - mainly on rear panel.
