6 Aiken, Conrad. SELECTED POEMS.
New York Charles Scribner's Sons 1929 First, limited edition. Hard Cover Fair Signed by Author
361 pp, 8 1/2" H. Green cloth spine with gilt lettering/decorative banding, patterned paper-covered boards. *Lacking the publisher's slipcase.* No. 3 of 210 copies, numbered and signed by Conrad Aiken on the limitation page. Aiken was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for 'Selected Poems' in 1930. Inscribed on the front free endpaper: "For Adrianne / on the way to / Hollywood / from / Philip Merivale / March : 1932". Philip Merivale was born in India, began his acting and screenwriting career in England, later moving to Los Angeles. This book is from the library of the actor Raymond Massey and we presume the 'Adrianne' of the dedication was Massey's first wife, Adrianne Allen (m.1929-1939). Ms. Allen is perhaps best known for her role in Noel Coward's 'Private Lives'. Following her divorce from Massey, Ms. Allen married American lawyer, William Dwight Whitney (and Massey married Whitney's ex-wife). In 1957 she joined her daughter, Anna Massey and Philip Merivale's son, John Merivale, in the Broadway production "The Reluctant Debutante", playing Sheila Broadbent, mother of the character played by Anna. Many pages have not been opened and others have rough edges from opening, several edge tears (archivally taped) or pieces missing from margins/corners between pages 329 & 336 - no text missing, age darkening to edges of text block - especially top of text block, moderate to heavy edge wear to boards - more at corners, browning to spine, light browning and some thin brown stains on boards, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, line dent across bottom of text block, small bump at top edge of rear board.

YESTERDAY'S TOWN: WELLINGTON. A DIARY OF A WEST COUNTRY TOWN IN THE 19th CENTURY., Allen, Gillian.
7 Allen, Gillian. YESTERDAY'S TOWN: WELLINGTON. A DIARY OF A WEST COUNTRY TOWN IN THE 19th CENTURY.
Buckingham Barracuda 1987 0860232921 / 9780860232926 Limited Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
124 pp, small 4to (10 7/16" H). Number 368 of a limited edition. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "(I)t is the detail of the 19th century record which attracts us most; the people who lived in specific houses like the Millers, Langleys and Merediths; the controversy about the three posts outside the White Hart Inn; the shops that changed from bank to fishmonger, from watchmaker to cobbler, from Bell Inn to basketmaker; the man who dug a canal in his garden to employ poor people; the ten-year-old who died when her pinny caught fire; the horse that took nine men to the gallows. Here too is the fire brigade whose captain refused entry to his own team as his cottage blazed away; the riots when a cemetery was proposed; the earliest chapels built and closed; Ann Pain, who stole a bullock's heart on St. Valentine's Day; Mr Marks, who lost 50 Pounds at Wellington Fair; elderly Maria Strippling, sentenced to seven days' labour for pinching threepennorth of hay; and the 4,703 tramps who came to Wellington in 1865. Transport changed the town, when the turnpikes, canal, railway and finally motorcar came. The first car owner was heavily fined; the first acceptable motor hit the Town Hall. Taverns prospered, and there were 75 at one time or another. Thirteen survive. The greatest change of all came with the Great War - 'our old world has gone forever' said the local 'rag'. That world is recreated (here) - in a fluent, fascinating and fact-packed narrative and some 200 pictures, many of them rare, and most unique to this book." Book is slightly cocked. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top edge, a few small faint indentations on panels, minor rubbing.

FINDING THE SUN'S TRUE BEARING. PRECOMPUTED TABLES., Arpin, P.E., foreword.
9 Arpin, P.E., foreword. FINDING THE SUN'S TRUE BEARING. PRECOMPUTED TABLES.
Ottawa Civil Aviation Branch, Department of Transport Soft Cover Very Good
112 pp + blank pages for notes, oblong (7 15/16" H x 10 1/2" D). No date. Erratum sheet laid in. "From aviation's earliest days, pilots of aircraft have been conscious of the need for accurate directional information. The development of the magnetic and gyro compass has, for general purposes, kept pace with aviation needs in most areas of the world. Flight operations in Northern Canada, however, present problems which are unique by virtue of the position of the North Magnetic Pole. - - In response to a need for the provision of directional information simply and to within one degree the Flight Standards and Regulations Division of the Civil Aviation Branch has arranged the development of these tables from which the Sun's True Bearing can be extracted directly knowing date, correct Local Civil time (within reasonable limits) and approximate Latitude and Longitude. - - It is also significant to note that these Tables are not limited to Canada only, but include any areas of the earth north of 40 degrees North Latitude, and for all practical purposes will maintain usable accuracy for an indefinite period." From the Foreword. Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownwership marks. Exterior - small soiling mark on top of textblock, some very light rubbing/soiling on rear cover.

NICHOLAS HILLIARD., Auerbach, Erna.
10 Auerbach, Erna. NICHOLAS HILLIARD.
Boston Boston Book & Art Shop 1964 Hard Cover Very Good Good+ Nicholas Hilliard.
352 pp, small 4to (10" H). Over 200 reproductions of Hilliard's work, mainly in b&w. "This is the first full-length monograph to be written on the life and work of Nicholas Hilliard who lived from 1547 to 1619. The first English-born painter to gain the status of an artist recognised by the English court, he was painter, limner, engraver and goldsmith to Queen Elizabeth I and later to James I, and is kown to have also painted portraits in oil, but it is difficult to attribute particular oil portraits to his hand. Hilliard's importance is not limited by his performance as a miniaturist, for the style of his miniatures had a major influence on the general trend of English painting, and dominated the manner of contemporary English portraiture, both life-size and miniature. (He) was equally eminent as a goldsmith and he practised this craft throughout his life. Much new biographical material has been found which establishes Hilliard as a great Elizabethan." Small bump to top corners of boards, minor browning to page edges. Dust jacket is moderately browned - mainly on inside surface, is price clipped, has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling - mainly to top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

12 Borawski, John. SECURITY FOR A NEW EUROPE: THE VIENNA NEGOTIATIONS ON CONFIDENCE- AND SECURITY-BUILDING MEASURES 1989-90, AND BEYOND.
London Brassey's (UK) 1992 1857530403 / 9781857530407 First English Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
235 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). "While the 'traditional' threat of East-West military confrontation appears much reduced, events in Yugoslavia have removed any complacency about the stability of the new Europe unfolding around us. New threats - territorial quarrels, nationalism, and the demise of the Soviet Union as a unitary state - require a radically new approach to European security. The creation of an effective security system will be highly dependent on the trust and co-operation between the former Warsaw Treaty Organisation countries and their new-found NATO allies. As their title suggests, the Vienna Negotiations on Confidence- and Security-Building Measures aimed to do exactly this, by fostering greater openness about military organisation and activity. John Borawski's history of the negotiations provides a detailed analysis of the issues involved, indicating the likely direction of future talks following the watershed March-July 1992 CSCE follow-up meeting in Helsinki, and highlighting their extreme relevance to the problems confronting European policy-makers today. As they continue to seek an alternative to the limited, hardware-based negotiations of the past, 'Security for a New Europe' grows in importance as a source of ideas for problems old and new." Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, light rubbing.

STAND ON GUARD: THE SEARCH FOR A CANADIAN DEFENCE POLICY., Brewin, Andrew.
16 Brewin, Andrew. STAND ON GUARD: THE SEARCH FOR A CANADIAN DEFENCE POLICY.
McClelland and Stewart, Toronto, 1965, first edition.
140 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "In today's nuclear era, in a world now spending roughly $120 billion annually preparing for war, all other questions fade into insignificance in comparison with the problem of preventing conflict. Yet in this race toward annihilation Canada, with a limited budget and modest military strength, could carve for herself a new, significant and perhaps decisive role, if her military and political leaders could set aside tradition-bound c o n c e p t s , concentrating instead on the unique position Canada can hold on a world scale. Penetrating to the heart of our 'defence muddle', stripping away the military jargon that surrounds military discussions, Mr. Brewin traces Canada's m il it ar y ro le s in ce the formation of NATO in 1949, shows why the United States' concept of 'massive retaliation' has lost all practical meaning, and urges Canada to divorce herself from policies which are obsolete, provocative, and meaningles s. Sp eak in g a s o ne of the political leaders whose thoughts may play a major role in shaping this country's defence policies in the future, he outlines with persuasive clarity the factors which make it imperative for Canada to abandon tactical nu clea r we apo ns a nd c onc ent rate on developing a compact, efficient, highly mobile non-nuclear fighting force capable of tackling 'brushfire wars' anywhere in the world." Slight bump at bottom of front hinge/spine, minor wrinkle at top of spin e, ti ny di nt o n bot tom o f re ar b oard. ONE MAN'S WAR: A SOLDIER'S DIARY., Brown, James Ambrose.
17 Brown, James Ambrose. ONE MAN'S WAR: A SOLDIER'S DIARY.
Howard Timmins, (Cape Town, South Africa, 1980).
185 pp, large 8vo (9 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. ISBN 0869781790 "Apart from its importance as an historical narrative the story told in these pages by a 22-year-old soldier has the unique quality of experience freshly captured...the truth of a soldier's life in the critical battles fought in North Africa in 1941-42. It is a personal view of war with its boredom, its moments of terror, of tenderness and humour and its final realisation that war is not a glorious game. It is written from the limited viewpoint of a young N.C.O. with his self-doubt, his fantasies and his moments of despair. It chronicles the handful of men around him...a section of mortarmen, griping, idle, insubordinate...extra ordinarily light-hearted, never failing when courage was demanded - and finally dying together in the great and bloody battle of El Alamein which is the climax of the diary. Told in a day-to-day, sometimes hour-by-hour account, (this) is a book that will touch a responsive chord in the heart of every man who has borne arms - in any army...The diarist has edited the original here and there and added notes which give a picture of the acutal military situation, often unknown to the writer at the t ime. "Light to moderate edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very light browning to edges of textblock. Dust jacket has very light edge wear, moderate wrinkling along top edge and top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, one tiny tear, small company label on front flap, minor wear, faint handwriting indentations on rear panel. SOPWITH SNIPE. WINDSOCK DATAFILE 46., Bruce, J.M. Foreword by R.L. Rimell. Drawings by C.A. Owers.
18 Bruce, J.M. Foreword by R.L. Rimell. Drawings by C.A. Owers. SOPWITH SNIPE. WINDSOCK DATAFILE 46.
Albatros, Berkhamsted, 1994.
36 pp, 11 5/8" H, soft cover (stapled in wraps). ISBN 0948414618 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, technical drawings/plans, colour profiles. "The Sopwith Snipe is firmly lodged in the minds of most WWI aeroplane enthusiasts due to the epic one-sided combat fought by Major William Barker on October 27 1918 in which he brought down four Fokker D.VIIs, an action that resulted in a well-earned Victoria Cross for the Canadian pilot. The Snipe had few other opportunities for glory; No .43 Squadron was the first unit to be equipped and made its first Snipe patrol on September 23 1918. Within five weeks nearly 100 Snipes were in France and No.208's Camels were in the process of being replaced by Snipes as the Armistice was dec l a r e d. In the immediate post-war period Snipes served with a dozen RAF Squadrons, 532 being recorded on charge by 1921, and the type soldiered on until 1928 when it was officially declared obsolete. Despite its necessarily limited role in the fi rs t ai r war the Snipe has been a popular choice for modellers and subject of at least two previous monographs and a nubmer of magazine articles. The 46th DATAFILE, however, offers the most comprehensive selection of illustrations on the type y et pub li she d in one volume and contains a great deal of information hitherto unrecorded." Interior - small soft bump at top/bottom corners of text block, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - small soft crease at c orn ers of cove rs. Very Good

20 Burton, G. Allan. A STORE OF MEMORIES.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1986 0771017928 / 9780771017926 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
330 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "With warmth, wry wit, and surprising candour, G. Allan Burton relates the big and small incidents in his life, sometimes with nostalgia, sometimes with bite. His story starts in Toronto's exclusive Rosedale district, where, as a child, he discovered the twin passions of horse-riding and watercolour painting, passions that became the dual themes of his life. The first took him into the Governor General's Horse Guards, into the Allied Forces' dangerous campaign in Italy during World War II, and into a life-long love of fox hunting. The second took him into architecture and interior design and then into Simpsons where he worked his way from stockboy to chairman of the company. Throughout his business career, he kept a journal in which he recorded the critical events of Simpsons growth - the formation of Simpsons-Sears, the opening of new stores, and the innovative development of shopping malls in Ontario and Quebec, the frustrations of economic recession, and finally the explosion of the 'store wars' in 1979 where the Hudson's Bay Company and Sears, Roebuck of Chicago battled for control of this major Canadian company." Very light wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has one tiny tear with crease - archivally taped, a few areas of light edge wrinkling, minor edge wear, very light rubbing.
