University of Florida, Gainesville, 1975.
152 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0813003520 Map endpapers, b&w illustrations. "Until the Second Seminole War the United States Navy had generally employed the Federalist doctrine (cruiser-commerce-raiding), but the un iqueness of this Indian conflict caused the navy to adopt a new offensive strategy. For the first time in history the American Navy was pitted against a nonmaritime foe. There were no single merchantmen to attack; there were no cruisers t o e n g a g e in single-ship combat; there were no enemy fleets to be repelled from the nation's harbors. Instead, there were Indians practicing guerilla tactics in a watery environment - the Everglades of Florida. Athough it was not apparent at t h e be gi nn in g o f the war, the navy's only hope for victory lay in the development of a strategy for riverine warfare. It was a kind of warfare that demanded specially trained combat groups, organized for sustained land/sea operations. I t r equ ir ed jo int ac tio n wi th the army. It called for a naval command familiar with setting up and directing complex operations and diverse forces to achieve an overall objective. In developing a strategy of riverine warfare, United States Nav y po lic y e volv ed f rom a de fe nsi ve to an offensive position, from a society of highly individualistic and inflexible sea captains into a well-meshed cooperative unit capable of working not only alone but also with the army. Between 1835 and 1842, the nav y cam e of age. Her e i s a dramatic account of that vital time, enhanced by an awesome setting, which will engage and enlighten both the scholar of naval history and the armchair sailor." Du st ja cket h as ve ry li ght ed ge w ear/ wrinkling, two very small closed tears with crease, light browning, very light soiling on rear panel and spine, tiny light stain on front panel. Throughout this fascinating offshore and off-centre island - fr om Cornwall's spectacular Land's End to Scotland's lonely northern outpost of John o' Groats - the dramatic and magnificent story of Britain has always been punctuated by the quirky, the irreverent and the downright dotty. (This book) explor e s e v e r y quirky corner of the nation from the outrageous expose of Dorset's Cerne Abbas giant, outlined in chalk on a green hillside in all its rude glory, to chasing cheeses down helter-skelter hillsides in Cambridgeshire. Farther north thin gs m a y ge t co lder, but they're still crazy with it. There's the highest pub in England at Yorkshire's Tan Hill and a Lake District lighthouse that is miles from the sea. Wales and Scotland are not far behind either when it comes to mad-hatter y. Wh er e els e wou ld you find people eager to submerge themselves for fun in a freezing Welsh bog? And how about Scotland, with a pineapple-shaped house and the world's best worst poet? Organized by area with maps that show the location of ever y b izar re bu ildi ng , pe culiar place and offbeat event and illustrated throughout with superb specially commissioned photography, this book will entertain, enlighten and more than often raise the odd eyebrow." 5 Hotson, Fred W. THE BREMEN.
Toronto CANAV 1988 0921022026 / 9780921022022 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
224 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, maps. "The flight of the German airplane 'Bremen' from Europe to North America in 1928 was one of the milestones of aviation history. No one had flown the Atlantic in that direction and the risks were high - seven people had died in the attempt. When two Germans and an Irishman left Ireland in the 'Bremen' for New York, there were predictions of a similar fate, and when nothing was heard after 40 hours, the newspapers began preparing obituaries for the gallant crew. Suddenly a message was relayed from a remote Canadian radio station: the aircraft had force-landed on an ice-bound island in the Gulf of St. Lawrence - and the race was on to reach the stranded flyers. The 'Bremen' story is an exciting drama of courage, humour and tragedy. All sorts of people found themselves drawn to the event, from the lighthouse keeper and his family, who watched in amazement as the aircraft landed almost at their front door, to presidents and prime ministers. There were the bush pilots who were first to reach the flyers, the mechanics who tried to repair the 'Bremen', ruthless reporters competing for a scoop, and Lindbergh making a mercy flight in an attempt to save the life of pilot Floyd Bennett. Small wonder an enthusiastic journalist of those aviation-mad day called the 'Bremen' episode, 'the greatest news story of all time'." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor rubbing, minor edge wrinkling.

"On the 20th August 1959 the prototype Victor Mark 2 bomber disappeared during flight trials over the Irish Sea. The captain of a coa ster bound from the Mersey to the Thames noticed a splash some eight miles away, when off the Pembrokeshire coast, reported it to Ilfracombe Radio Station and made a brief entry in the ship's log. From then on Operation Victor Search was und e r w a y . Controlled by H.M.S. Harrier it involved more than 40 ships and 4,000 men and women and was officially described as 'probably the greatest salvage operation of its type ever undertaken'. Those at sea toiled for long and arduous hours , of t en i n th e most atrocious weather, throughout a wild winter and much of the following year. When the final signal, 'Return to harbour - search complete' went out, the trawlers, backed by salvage vessels, had carried out more than 12,000 ha ul s a nd ne arl y 600 ,000 pieced of the missing Victor had been recovered. This represented 70 per cent of the aircraft and gave the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough, enough information for them to be 'reasonably satisfied' that they kn ew the cau se o f th e acci dent." SHIPWRECKS OF THE BRISTOL CHANNEL., Smith, Graham.
9 Smith, Graham. SHIPWRECKS OF THE BRISTOL CHANNEL.
Countryside Books, Newbury, Berkshire, 1991, first edition.
128 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H), soft cover. ISBN 185306153 B&w map, photographs, reproductions. "Over the centuries, the Bristol Channel, with one of the highest tidal ranges in the world and opening out to the fury of the Atlantic Ocean, has seen the en d of many a fine ship. Both English and Welsh coasts have their own particular hazards, including the cruel chain of reefs, rocks and cliffs from Hartland Point to Bridgwater Bay and the treacherous Gower Coast. (This book) tells the stor i e s b e h i n d some of the most dramatic and unusual of these disasters. Lundy Island, for centuries the haunt of smugglers and pirates, was the scene in 1906 of the spectacular wreck of HMS Montague, a first class battleship of 14,000 tons. T he s ch o on er G ip sy brought the entire port of Bristol to a standstill in 1878 when she ran aground in the Avon Gorge. Locked in the holds of the Admiralty tender Caesar, 68 victims of the press gang drowned when she was driven onto the rock s o f P wll du He ad in 176 0. In 1883, the two daughters of the Mumbles lighthouse keeper stood in the raging sea, hauling survivors of the stricken lifeboat Wolverhampton from the waves. Graham Smith brings these and many more stories to life, reca llin g th e c hara cte rs who man ned these working vessels and the more unusual ships of this busy waterway. For this is an account not only of the ships that foundered but also of the courage and heroism displayed by seamen and those who ris ked t heir lives to save them ." Int erio r - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor wear at corners and top/bottom of spine, tiny scuff on spine edge, two small soft creases on front cover. Very Good

10 Staebler, Edna. CAPE BRETON HARBOUR.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1972 0771082886 / 9780771082887 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good- Tom Anthes. Signed by Author
176 pp, 9 1/4" H. Signed by author on title page. "The spell of the sea will be on you as you read this finely illustrated story of Edna Staebler's discovery of a small fishing village on the Cabot Trail. Like a found seashell, or a pocketful of sand, the book will talk to you of people, the sound of gulls and the sea, long after you have read it. A lone stranger, determined to leave the bleak hamlet on the next bus, Edna was soon listenening to the codfishermen, to children on the wharf, and to a man who wanted a woman 'not for t'rills, but for darned socks and mashed potatoes'. She went swordfishing on the 'Devil Diver', hitch-hiking over the mountains, and grew to love the people, who in turn accepted her into their lives. Here is an intimate look at what so many people mean when they picture 'the Maritimes', as it used to be." Very minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, one tiny chip, three small edge tears archivally taped, slight fading to spine color, light rubbing.
