THE ROYAL HORSE ARTILLERY. FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES., Bidwell, Shelford. Introduction by Lieut.-General Sir Brian Horrocks.
4 Bidwell, Shelford. Introduction by Lieut.-General Sir Brian Horrocks. THE ROYAL HORSE ARTILLERY. FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES.
Leo Cooper, London, 1973, first edition.
115 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850521386 B&w photographs, maps, reproductions. Music for Regimental Slow March, Trot Past, Gallop Past. "Many people's visual image of the Royal Horse Artillery is probably confined to the dazzling equestrian performances of the King's Troop which annually entrance schoolboys of all ages at the Royal Tournament. How many people pause to wonder why, in the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, there should be a King's Troop? How many stop to consider why indeed there should have been a separate formation of mounted artillery in the British Army at all? Brigadier Bidwell answers these and most other questions about the Royal Horse Artillery, and as an experienced author, as e d i t o r o f the Royal United Services Institute Journal and an ex-Horse Gunner himself he could hardly be better suited to his task. From their formation in 1793 to the present day the Royal Horse Artillery have had but one objective - to exc e l. Th ey a re in deed a corps d'elite but a corps d'elite whose claim to distinction is based entirely on merit and, as Brigadier Bidwell shows, for nearly two hundred years they have rigidly adhered to their self imposed standard of excellence . He has pa id wor t hy tribute to a body of men whose name will shine forever in the annals of British military history." THE ROYAL SCOTS GREYS (THE 2nd DRAGOONS). FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES., Blacklock, Michael. Introduction by Lieut.-General Sir Brian Horrocks.
5 Blacklock, Michael. Introduction by Lieut.-General Sir Brian Horrocks. THE ROYAL SCOTS GREYS (THE 2nd DRAGOONS). FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES.
Leo Cooper, London, 1971, first edition.
126 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850520886 B&w photographs, reproductions. Music for Regimental Quick March (The Garb of Old Gaul), Bugle Charge, and Regimental Quick March for Pipes & Drums (Highland Laddie). "At Waterlo o they charged the French shouting 'Scotland for ever!' and Sergeant Ewart captured the Eagle of the 45th French Regiment. As Napoleon exclaimed, 'Qu'ils sont terribles, ces chevaux gris', and he spoke from the heart: he was referring to t h e R o y a l Scots Greys. As it was at Waterloo, so it was at Balaclava where the Greys, as part of the Heavy Brigade, went through the Russians like a knife through butter; in South Africa, where they scattered the Boers like grass in the path of a sc yt he . T h e grey horses gave way to tanks in 1941 but the spirit of Sergeant Ewart lived on in the Second World War, and in no 'Grey' more so than Lt.-Col. Geoffrey Keyes, posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his daring raid on R omm el' s He adq uar te rs in North Africa. The story of the Royal Scots Greys - whether they are charging French, Russians or Germans as cavalry, or fighting in North Africa, Italy or North-West Europe in tanks - will stir the blood of every man who has e ver sold iere d a nd man y civilians besides." Very light cigarette odor, very light browning to edges of text block and in margins of pages, small bump to bottom ofspine. "For one hundred and fifty years the Gurkhas have been coming down from their mountain homes of Nepal to join the British Army. I n that time they have carved a reputation as the toughest, bravest and most lovable fighting troops in the world. Certainly they are the best known. (This book) tellls their exciting, humorous and moving story. The vast canvas ranges from t h e f o r mation of the first Gurkha Regiments on April 24, 1815, to their steadfastness during the Indian Mutiny, through the fierce nineteenth century wars on India's turbulent frontiers, into World War I in France, Mesopotamia, and Gallipoli. W e jo i n th em as they add further glory to their reputation during World War II in North Africa, Italy and the jungles of Burma. The post-war period tells of their activities in Malaya and Borneo, and of their last-ditch actions against the Ch ine se on t he co ld, bare mountains of India's disputed northern frontier. It is a story of great endurance, courage far beyond the call of duty, and of staunch loyalty to the British Crown. The Gurkhas suffered 45,000 casualties in the two W orld Wa rs. Th ey have won twelve VCs and countless other decorations for gallantry." 14 Judd, David W. Illustrations from drawings by Lieut. L.C. Mix. THE STORY OF THE THIRTY-THIRD N.Y.S. VOLS: OR TWO YEARS CAMPAIGNING IN VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND.
mBenton & Andrews, Rochester, 1864, Ist edition.
349 pp, + 76 pp. (Appendices) + ads, small 8vo, hard cover (dark green boards with embossed floral design at corners, gilt decoration - sabre, rifle and wreath - on front cover, repeated on rear cover without gilt) - no dust jacket. B&w illustrations, including tissue-covered frontispiece. "This volume does not propose to review the causes, rise and progress of the unhappy civil strife, which for more than two years has rent our land; neither is it designed to describe all the operations which have marked the war in the single department of Virginia and Maryland. It aims merely, as the title page indicates, at giving a narrative of one of the many Regiments which the Empire State has sent into the field, together with a description of the various campaigns in which it participated...The plan, as will readily be seen, comprises separate sketches of each company until merged into the Regiment; the regimental history from the period of its organization at Elmira in May, 1861, until its return from the war, May, 1863; brief biographies of the various officers, and muster rolls of the men...A double interest attaches to the numerous engravings which embellish the volume, from the fact that instead of being gotten up to ordr, they were 'drawn on the spot' by a skilful artist - an officer of the Regiment - who participated in all the scenes through which it passed. They constitute in themselves a pictorial history of the first two years of the Eastern campaign." The Regiment participated in the battles of Williamsburg, Mechanicsville, Golden's Farm, Second Mechanicsville, Gaines' Farm, Malvern, Antietam, Fredericksburg and Salem Heights among others. Interior - pages browning lightly, free front endpaper missing, ghost signature on preliminary, light scattered foxing on rear endpapers, erased pencil numbers on rear pastedown, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - wear at corners, cloth missing from top edge of spine, bottom edge is fraying but basically all there, slight fading to spine color, protected in mylar sleeve. G+
