1 Bacque, James. (Raoul Laporterie.) JUST RAOUL: THE PRIVATE WAR AGAINST THE NAZIS OF RAOUL LAPORTERIE, WHO SAVED OVER 1,600 LIVES IN FRANCE.
Prima, Rocklin, CA, 1992, first edition.
192 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1559581425 Map endpapers, b&w illustrations. "In German-occupied France in 1940, only a few people refused to give up the great ideals of their country - liberty, equality, and fraternity. O ne of these was Raoul Laporterie. Starting right after the fall of France, he supplied false documents, money, transport, and shelter to more than 1,600 people. Those rescued were chiefly Sephardic Jews of Bordeaux, but also included a co v e y o f n uns, some French soldiers evading prison camps, and Allied flyers fleeing captivity. He was assisted by his wife, Laure, and his daughter, Irene, his employees in his clothing stores, and all the residents of the village of Bascons, ne ar t h e bo r de r between Occupied and Vichy France, where he was mayor. Risking death daily, Laporterie managed to outmaneuver and fool the Germans repeatedly. A true Christian, he loved others regardless of the consequences. Today, at ag e 9 4, he ha s rec ei ved m a ny honours from the governments of France and Israel. This is his dramatic story." Minor edge wear, minor browning on bottom front edge. 4 Fowler, William M., Jr. REBELS UNDER SAIL: THE AMERICAN NAVY DURING THE REVOLUTION.
Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1976, book club edition.
320 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "Almost as soon as the smoke had settled at Lexington and Concord, the American Revolution was being fought on the sea as well as on land. A fragile and disunited coalition of thirteen colonies, embarking on a war with a great naval power, began to build a navy for the 'preservation of the lives, liberty and property of the good people of these Colonies'. (This book) provides a vivid and authoritative history of h o w t h e new American nation set about its task. Americans have always been a sea-minded people, and even before the Declaration of Independence was signed, the Congress resolved to build a strong navy. The maritime skills of New England and th e ti m be r, p itch and turpentine of the colonies had made them a major resource for the British navy; this resource the Americans now turned toward their own ends. Fowler describes how a small group of delegates to Congress, led by John Adam s an d str on gly su ppo rted by Washington, labored to form a powerful fighting fleet. He describes the difficulty of enlisting men for the navy (they preferred to sail on privateers where they could reap rich rewards from capturing enemy vessel s) , th e jock eyi ng f or c omma nd by captains, the building of ships in shipyards all up and down the coast. The fledgling navy made some terrible blunders - most notably the disastrous Penobscot expedition which cost the Americans dearly - but it also en joyed mom ents of gr eat g lory, particularly under its greatest commander, John Paul Jones. Fowler describes both the failures and the successes, and he surveys the story not just of the navy itself but of the privateers and merchant s hip s tha t f ought along side it." Light wrinkling and edge wear at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has slight edge browning on inside, light wear at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds. Very Good/Very Good

5 Heming, Arthur. THE DRAMA OF THE FORESTS: ROMANCE AND ADVENTURE.
Toronto S.B. Gundy 1924 First Canadian Edition. Hard Cover Good+ No Jacket Arthur Heming.
324 pp, 7 3/4" H. 14 colour plates, including frontispiece (collated). "(I) travelled twenty-three times through various parts of the vast northern woods, between Maine and Alaska, and covered thousands upon thousands of miles by canoe, pack-train, snowshoes, bateau, dog-train, buck-board, timber-raft, prairie-schooner, lumber-wagon, and 'alligator'. (B)ack again I went at all seasons of the year to encamp in that great timber-land that sweeps from the Atlantic to the Pacific. thus it has taken me thirty-three years to gather the information this volume contains - (but) I wish to explain that in compliance with the wishes of the leading actors - who actually lived their parts of this story - fictitious names have been given to the principal characters and to the principal trading posts, lakes, and rivers herein depicted. Furthermore, in order to give the reader a more interesting, complete, and faithful description of the daily and the yearly life of the forest dwellers as I have observed it, I have taken the liberty of weaving together the more interesting facts I have gathered - both first- and second-hand - into one continuous narrative as though it all happened in a single year. And in order to retain all the primitive local colour, the unique costumes, and the fascinating romance of the fur-trade days as I witnessed them in my twenties - though much of the life has already passed away - the scene is set to represent a certain year in the early (1890s)." Separation between some page gatherings (mainly at illustration locations) - pages are firm in binding, very slight bump at top corner of boards, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor shelf soiling on bottom of text block, three very small stains on top of text block, minor rubbing on boards. Book is protected in a stiff mylar sleeve.

Unpaginated foreword, introductory essay and list of plates plus 130 b&w plates (photographs, plans, drawings) and frontispiece, 4to (12 1/8" H, hard cover in dust jacket. "Forming originally a part of the state of Virginia, Kentucky was peopled la rgely from Virginia and nearby colonies; thus the economic system, the social fabric and the cultural outlook of Kentucky resembles these features of life in the Old Dominion. Bringing with them a love of classic architecture engendered by as s o c i a t ion with the great houses in the valleys of the James and the Potomac, it is no surprise to discover that a definite classic spirit premeates the more formal types of architecture in Kentucky. In the early pioneer period, of necessity, r ec ou rs e wa s had to primitive forms. Beginning with the log cabin with its 'wattle-and-daub' chimney, architectural expression in Kentucky passed through successive improvements, culminating eventually in the great classic-porticoed brick mansio ns whi ch to th is day lend so much charm to the countryside. Architecture in Kentucky parallels the career of architecture upon our Atlantic seaboard. There is this difference, however, that while architecture in Kentucky reflects most of the v ogu es a nd fas hion s o f the seaboard forms, it records these changes somewhat belatedly. That is to say a style or a fashion well known in the maritime states will often not make its appearance in Kentucky for from ten to thirty years. Once acc lima ted, how ever , suc h vo gues are as likely to persist here as in other areas of America." Toronto University of Toronto Press 1982 802055885 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+
292 pp, 9 1/4" H. Pictorial boards (no dust jacket - as issued?), black endpapers, b&w illustrations. "During the last third of the nineteenth century a fierce rivalry among party 'organs', sectarian dailies, upstart 'people's journals', and revamped 'quality' papers fashioned a popular journalism for a large, chiefly urban audiece in Canada. By the end of the 1890s, the number of daily and weekly editions of these newspapers exceeded the count of Canadian families. The country's first mass medium had arrived. Professor Rutherford charts the growth of the daily press, describing personalities and events. He surveys the cultural prerequisites for mass communication - the growth of the city, of urban politics, and of mass literacy - and looks at the personnel, business routines, and worries of the new industry, showing how the news and views, ads and entertainment of the press changed as publishers competed for increased circulation. He also analyses the mythologies purveyed by the popular press across Canada, defines the press's connection with the 'establishment', and shows how daily papers suited the libertarian model of a 'free press'." RHODESIA., Todd, Judith.
19 Todd, Judith. RHODESIA.
London MacGibbon & Kee 1966 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+
170 pp, 8 3/4" H. "Judith Todd sets out some facts on the origins of the dispute over Rhodesia (the current Zimbabwe). As the daughter of a former Prime Minister she is in a good position to know part of the story from the inside. Her father is now 'restricted' by an order made by an illegal government. Miss Todd was brought up on a mission station in Rhodesia and while she understands perfectly well the European achievement in this part of Africa, she has seen also that it is not enough. Not at least while the great majority of the population is thwarted politically and socially underprivileged to an extreme degree. Their leaders are cajoled, penalised; their sympathisers are made victims of the most crude political enmity - amounting almost to hysteria. Miss Todd is devoted to the best and long-lasting aspirations of this beautiful country. She can, therefore, bear the revilement that the friends of the misguided and ultimately doomed Rhodesian government have to offer. Patriotism may well not be enough; but justicce and freedom are necessary foundations to any patriotism deserving of the name." Chapter headings: 'The Police and the Army are Ready'; In the Beginning; The Essence of Discrimination; Right Turn Ahead; Sowing the Seeds; Where the Banished Ones Sleep; White Myths and Black Realities; Civilised Standards; Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness; 'The Respect for the Opinions of Mankind'; Happy New Year!; Not the End of the World; The Consent of the Governed.
