467 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "(T)akes readers from the Bohemian capital's thousand-year-old castle to the bomb shelters of London, from the desolate prison ghetto of Terezin to the highest councils of European and American government. Albright reflects on her discovery of her family's Jewish heritage many decades after the war, on her Czech homeland's tangled history, and on the stark moral choices faced by her parents and their generation. Often relying on eyewitness descrip-tions, she tells the story of how millions of ordinary citizens were ripped from familiar surroundings and forced into new roles as exiled leaders and collaborators, victims and killers. These events of enormous complexity are nevertheless shaped by concepts familair to any growing child: fear, trust, adaptation, the search for identity, the pressure to conform, the quest for independence, and the difference between right and wrong. At once a deeply personal memoir and an incisive work of history, 'Prague Winter' serves as a guide to the future through the lessons of the past - as seen through the eyes of one of the international community's most respected and fascinating figures." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of hinges and flap-folds.

13 Dyhouse, Carol. GIRLS GROWING UP IN LATE VICTORIAN AND EDWARDIAN ENGLAND.
Routledge & Kegan Paul, London, 1981, first edition.
224 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 071000821X "Girls learn about 'femininity' from childhood onwards, first through their relationships with the family, and later from their teachers and peers. Using sources which vary from diaries to Inspector's reports, Carol Dyhouse studies the socialization of middle- and working-class girls in late-Victorian and early-Edwardian England. She traces the ways in which schooling at all social levels at this time tended to r e i n f o r c e lessons in the sexual division of labour and patterns of authority between men and women, which girls had already learned at home. In Elementary Schools, social anxieties about 'National Efficiency', high infant-mortality figures a nd a d ec li ni ng b i rth-rate helped to shape the curriculum offered to working-class girls through the period 1870-1920. The author then focuses on the emergence of a social psychology of adolescent girlhood in the early-twentieth century wit h i ts edu cat ion al imp lic at ions. Finally, she examines the relationship between feminism and girls' education through the period studied." Small faint area of soiling on fornt board. "Joining the RAF at the beginning of the war, (Neville Duke) found himself, aged 19, as a young fighter pilot with the crack 92 Squadron at RAF Biggin Hill, in 1941. That spring and summer he survived the air battles over Northern France with the Biggin Hill Wing, often flying as wingman to the legendary 'Sailor' Malan - Fighter Command's top-scoring pilot at that time. In those months he learnt the fighter pilot's trade, lessons that were to prove invaluable when, in November, he was posted to a very different war in the Western Desert. Flying the famous 'Shark-Mouthed' P40B Tomahawk fighters with 112 Sqn, he quickly established himself as one of the most successful pilots in North Africa, winning the DFC and bar. By 1943 he was flight commander with his old 92 Squadron which had also become part of the Desert Air Force. Again flying Spitfires, he had scored twenty-one by the end of the Tunisian Campaign, was a warded the DSO, then given command of 145 Spitfire Squadron in Italy. Leading this unit in the summer of 1944 he brought his score to twenty-eight, returning home in late 1944 as the highest scoring pilot in the Mediterranean Theatre..." The story of a Catholic prep school, opened in London in 1934. Includes anecdotes from "Old Boys" about their unconventional schooldays, including the horrors of school food ("lumpy custard; fish pie 'with bones'; liver 'with tubes'; water mash 'with eyes'; and a particularly nasty blancmange, whose thick unyielding skin was lightly topped with a layer of dust'). It describes an eccentric staff - "Many smoked and drank to a heroic extent, while corporal punishment was meted out with, it must be said, rather shocking regularity." "But the boys had fun, too. In general, they liked the emphasis on sport and all revelled in the Ascension Day outing to Box Hill where they were encouraged to do battle with water pistols (the teachers wore plastic macs). They were taught boxing and ballroom dancing; they had singing lessons - they learned English, French, Latin and maths, but not, for many years, science, for Mr Tibbits held that 'gentleman do not study science'."
