Viking, Markham, Ontario, 1988, first Canadian edition.
224 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. BOLDLY INSCRIBED AND DATED BY AUTHOR ON TITLE PAGE. ISBN 0670817562 "In sight of green sugar-cane fields and the sea, the Rum Shop and the Tailor Shop are awash with buckshee rum and male talk. W hile Sarge (known to have broken an innocent man's legs with his truncheon) holds forth about blasted 'properganda', Seabert the Tailor has ambitions for a seat in Parliament and his eye on a big car. As a young man, Michael William Wilberf o r c e T h orne - 'Boy' to the villagers - learns about life from these vibrant characters. Coming of age in the Barbados of the 1950s, he is both horrified and fascinated by the political scheming that surrounds him. After spending several yea rs a t a C an ad i an university on a scholarship, Boy returns to his country with a sharper awareness of its people and possibilities. When an election is called and this tiny, colonial island hovers on the brink of a new political dawn, he is t rea ted a s a pol iti ca l saviour, the first of a new breed. This rich novel, at once serious and hilariously funny, gives a wonderfully exuberant picture of life in Barbados in the early 1950s, painted with unflagging humour and zest." FIGHTER: THE TRUE STORY OF THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN., Deighton, Len. Introduction by A.J.P. Taylor.
3 Deighton, Len. Introduction by A.J.P. Taylor. FIGHTER: THE TRUE STORY OF THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN.
Castle, Edison, NJ, 2000, reprint.
261 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0785812083 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps/battle plans, cartoons, drawings. "Drawing on the mastery of technical detail he displayed so brilliantly in 'Bomber' (the s tory of an RAF bombing raid), (Deighton) gives us an altogether factual and comprehensive picture of the men, the machines, the strategies (and the blunders), and the events on both sides. He shows us the British squandering precious fighter pl a n e s in a futile effort to halt the German blitzkrieg in France, and the Germans refusing to believe in the effectiveness of British radar. He compares the fire power, combat tactics, and ground control, analyzing the performance of both the pl an es ( th e Messerschmitt broke up in mid-air more often than the Spitfire) and the pilots (men such as the fabled Douglas Bader, who flew better with two artificial legs than other men with two real ones; or 'Onkel Theo' Osterkamp, a WWI German a ce who be cam e an ace in WWII as well, until he was finally ordered off combat flying at the age of forty-eight). We see the British General Staff divided against itself (after the Battle, the man most responsible for the British victory - Sir Hu gh Dowd ing , C om mander in Chief, Fighter Command - was dismissed); the German High Command, unsure of its objectives; exaggerated British claims (and an almost fatal shortage of pilots); and German technical superiority that was continually und erc ut by Nazi in c ompetence." Small Christmas gift inscription on half-title page, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny stain on fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, minor rubbing. THOSE WERE THE DAYS: THE LORE OF HOCKEY BY THE LEGENDS OF THE GAME., Fischler, Stan.
4 Fischler, Stan. THOSE WERE THE DAYS: THE LORE OF HOCKEY BY THE LEGENDS OF THE GAME.
New York Dodd, Mead 1976 0396070159 / 9780396070153 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
337 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). Pictorial endpapers, b&w photographs. "There was a time when winters were cold, the ice was black, and hockey was played as much for fun as for the small money earned by the few good skaters involved. The slapshot and the red line and the curved stick were all in the future. Shifts lasted sixty minutes. And nips from pocket flasks kept the legs churning. Then the game moved indoors, taking a few of these hardy survivors along with it. The competition grew fierce. Large stadiums attracted large crowds. And the now bigger money gave rise to such legendary names as Cyclone Taylor, Newsy Lalonde, and Eddie Shore; Frank Boucher, Johnny Gagnon and Howie Morenz; Gordie Howe, Glenn Hall, and Maurice Richard. Stan Fischler spent more than five years crisscrossing North America to collect on tape the fascinating reminiscences of these modest, unassuming, once so very talented players." Very light edge wear, minor wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket is price-clipped, light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of spine, very light rubbing/soiling on the rear panel.

WHALERS NO MORE: A HISTORY OF WHALING ON THE WEST COAST., Hagelund, W.A.

Madeira Park, BC Harbour 1987 0920080022 / 9780920080023 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
211 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, drawings, maps. "Over 30,000 whales were killed in the Pacific Northwest between 1905 and 1972, and the business of capturing and processing them created its own mythology. Here are tales of the monsters that almost got away, of whales that rammed the ships trying to capture them, and of the whalers themselves, who lived always on the edge of danger, risking life and limb in pursuit of the biggest animals in the world. Many of the old whalers were avid collectors of maritime lore, and their stories of whales and of the life in the sea - the sperm whale's ambergris, freaks of enormous size or those with legs, and giant octopus and sea monsters - create a vivid background to William Hagelund's very personal history of whaling on the west coast." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, small ink mark at top edge of rear board. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor rubbing on rear panel.

KNIGHTS OF THE AIR: CANADIAN ACES OF WORLD WAR I. GREAT STORIES OF CANADA SERIES NO. 18., Harris, John Norman. Illustrated by William Wheeler.
7 Harris, John Norman. Illustrated by William Wheeler. KNIGHTS OF THE AIR: CANADIAN ACES OF WORLD WAR I. GREAT STORIES OF CANADA SERIES NO. 18.
Macmillan, Toronto, 1960, reprint.
160 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Pictorial endpapers, B&w and black, white & green illustrations. "High above the mud and slaughter of the trenches, the little wood-and-fabric airplanes looped, rolled, banked, in mortal duel. So me of the soldiers who stared at them in the skies of France and Flanders in 1915 were Canadians. They had not dreamt that they would ever leave the ground. Yet within three years Canadians had proved themselves masters of this new form of f i g h t i n g and a dozen Canadians ranked among the top aces of the world. This book is about those Canadian masters of the aerial dogfight. Barker of Manitoba is here - incredibly daring hero of the French and Italian fronts who, with both legs a nd o ne a rm s hattered by enemy bullets, shot down four attackers and drove off the rest before he crashed behind his own lines: crowning exploit of a flying career in which he had destroyed 50 enemy aircraft. Collishaw of Vancouver is here, wi th his sc ore of 60 . Only half-a-dozen aces of all nations surpassed him - and only Bishop among the Canadians with his tally of 72. For Billy Bishop was most famous of all. In his first six weeks of flying he scored 17 victories and won the DSO and the MC. Fo ur w eeks later he added the VC. Many other aces are here - McKeever, MacLaren, Claxton, McCall, Quigley, Carter, Burden, Milne, Bell-Irving. Flying without parachutes in machines which burnt like torches when they caug ht f ire, thes e air men t ook f right ful risks. Below them, men lived in muddy trenches under shell-fire; they depended on the work of the airmen above and the airmen did not let them down. This is their story." Written for the younger reader. Pre vious owner 's nam e on f ront f ree en d paper, light browning to edges of text block and top/bottom edges of boards, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, slight browning on spine. Dust jacket has been price-clipped has very small chips and te ars - mainly at top/ bottom of spin e, ligh t edge wear/wrinkling, several small tears with creases, light fading to spine color, slight browning. Boston Houghton Mifflin 2001 0618103139 / 9780618103133 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good Mary Azarian.
Unpaginated, 11 1/4" H. Beautifully illustrated in full color. "When they went into battle they wore no costly armor, just birchbark wrapped around their legs, and so they were called 'Birkebeiners', which means 'Birchleggers'. It is the year 1206, and deep in the snow-covered mountains and valleys of Norway, the fiercest warriors in the land struggle to ski a baby to safety. They race against the greed and inequity of the rich, against the very weather of Norway. They race as the only way to save a child prince and bring peace to their country. Here is an untold story of both bravery and tenderness. Mary Azarian's strong, sure woodcuts capture the warmth and ruggedness of medieval life, while Lise Lunge-Larsen's dramatic telling is direct and mesmerizing. Read this book on a dark winter's night, next to a roaring fire, and imagine the long, cold race of history's first famous skiers." A few tiny dints on bottom edge of boards. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top edge, small faint sticker mark on rear panel, minor rubbing.

MAGNUS VOLK OF BRIGHTON., Volk, Conrad.
15 Volk, Conrad. MAGNUS VOLK OF BRIGHTON.
Phillimore, London, (1971), first edition.
240 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "Born in Brighton in 1851, Magnus Volk was a true pioneer of electrical engineering. While still in his early twenties he was employing a dozen or more workpeople, making a simple t elegraph set which sold all over the world. In 1879, when he married, his house was the first in Brighton to have electric lighting...It was in 1883 that he built his original little railway in Great Britain. This was the start of a long s t r u g g l e against both man and nature; but Magnus reacted typically to opposition, and extended the line - twice. Not content with this, he built another railway further east - a truly fantastic conception, nick-named 'Daddy-Long-Legs'. Th e b oo k te ll s th e e xtraordinary story of the electric motor-car he made; of the order he received for another like it from the Sultan of Turkey - surely the earliest export order for a car ever to reach this country; and of his visit to Consta nt ino ple t o d eli ve r i t in person. Then there were the telephone exchanges, the electric launches, the submarine mines, the X-Ray equipment...and still the list could be lengthened. Local and family history, topography, Victoriana, enginee rin g ar chiv es, the his tor y of m oto ring and aviation - there is plenty here, in both text and illustration, for all whose interests lie expecially in these fields; while for the general reader there is the story of a whole - written simply and not w ithou t hu mour; a re cord of e nde avou r, of dogged tenacity in the face of relentless opposition and ill-fortune. A study, in short, of a very remarkable man." Slight bump at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling, h as v ery li ght ru bbing , and is pri ce cl ipped. VG +/VG
