THE TRADITIONAL HISTORY AND CHARACTERISTIC SKETCHES OF THE OJIBWAY NATION., Copway, G. (George), or, Kah-ge-ga-gah-bowh, Chief of the Ojibway Nation.
3 Copway, G. (George), or, Kah-ge-ga-gah-bowh, Chief of the Ojibway Nation. THE TRADITIONAL HISTORY AND CHARACTERISTIC SKETCHES OF THE OJIBWAY NATION.
Toronto Prospero 2001 1552671801 / 9781552671801 Facsimile Reprint. Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
298 pp, 8vo (8 7/8" H). "Numerically the largest group of Native North Americans, the Ojibway were the first to have a history written by one of their own people. Published in 1850, its author, George Copway, or Kah-ge-g a-gah-bowh, had already achieved a certain amount of fame delivering passionate lectures in North America and Europe. Attired in traditional Ojibway dress, Copway held up the virtues of tribal life while promoting mid-nineteenth-century ideas on education. Arguing for a separate Native North American state, Copway garnered considerable support from both Natives and non-Natives. (This), Copway's finest book, is in many ways a summation of his lectures. Written primarily for a non- Native audience, Copway viewed the book as an attempt to 'awaken a deeper feeling' toward the people of the First Nations. Much more than a history, the work in an exploration of Ojibway culture through which Copway had sought to induce the British and American governments to greater efforts in improving their relationships with Native North Americans." Minor edge wrinkling, minor rubbing.

THE SENSE OF ORDER: A STUDY IN THE PSYCHOLOGY OF DECORATIVE ART., Gombrich, E.H.
9 Gombrich, E.H. THE SENSE OF ORDER: A STUDY IN THE PSYCHOLOGY OF DECORATIVE ART.
Oxford Phaidon 1980 0714817325 / 9780714817323 Second Impression. Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
411 pp, 10 3/4" H. Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour. "After an Introduction on Order and Purpose in Nature, which offers a novel approach to the study of pattern, the first chapters deal with the criticism of ornament, the cult of simplicity and the debates about design in Victorian England, in which such eminent critics as Ruskin, Owen Jones and Gottfried Semper made a permanent contribution to theoretical issues. The craftsman's practice of pattern-making is studied as a response to the challenges of material, of geometrical laws and psychological constraints, after which the author examines the perception and the effects of visual orders in the light of recent research. The relation-ship between psychology and history is the theme of four final chapters which deal with the tenacity of ornamental traditions, their modification by the changing styles and fashions of different periods, the role of symbolism in the origin and the use of motifs, and the psychological roots of the grotesque, oscillating between magic and humour. An Epilogue reviews some of the analogies between the spatial orders of decorative design and the temporal patterns of the dance, of poetry and, notably, of music, not forgetting the 'kinetic art' of our century. This absorbing work, the fruit of a lifetime's interest in the most universal and yet strangely neglected manifestation of human creativity, is based on the Wrightsman Lectures given by the author in 1970 under the auspices of the Institute of Fine Arts of New York University." Very minor edge wear, minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling, one tiny tear archivally taped.

12 Laffan, R.G.D. THE SERBS: THE GUARDIANS AT THE GATE.
Dorset, New York, 1989, reprint.
299 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0880294132 Maps. " 'The Serbs' was originally a series of lectures delivered by the renowned British historian R.G.D. Laffan. (His) lectures became so famous they were collected and publish ed in book form. Out of print for many years, (this) is the classic book on an important and misunderstood people. Too many of us only know the Serbs as precipitators of World War I, when a Serbian nationalist assassinated Austrian Archduke F r a n c i s Ferdinand in 1914 causing Austria to declare war. But Serbian history is eventful and filled with intrigue. To give us one example, (the author) brings to brilliant life the Turkish war with Serbia in which the great Serbian nobilit y w as n ea rl y annihilated, its lands distributed to the Turkish military aristocracy and the Serbian Christian peasants treated like slaves. All through this occupation the Serbs were forbidden to possess weapons, but an unquenchable desire fo r fre edo m l ed to fr equent insurrection. Finally the Treaty of Adrianople forced the Turks to evacuate. Anyone interested in a historical perpective of a great and heroic people will find (this book) as absorbing as it is inspiring. For, as Pr of esso r La ffan wr ite s ' the Serbs have shown that, despite adversity and homelessness, their spirit remains unconquerable'." CULTURE AND ANARCHY IN IRELAND 1890-1939. THE FORD LECTURES DELIVERED IN THE UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD IN THE HILARY TERM OF 1978., Lyons, F.S.L.
15 Lyons, F.S.L. CULTURE AND ANARCHY IN IRELAND 1890-1939. THE FORD LECTURES DELIVERED IN THE UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD IN THE HILARY TERM OF 1978.
Oxford Oxford University Press 1979 0192224931 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good-
184 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). "Irish history has traditionally been interpreted primarily in political terms as the struggle of an emerging nation to shake itself free of seven hundred years of English domination. The events of the last decade in Northern Ireland have led many people to realise that the reality is more complex, but this has left them if anything more confused than they were before. The purpose of this book is to trace concisely the outline of four conflicting cultures which co-exist in Ireland north and south. To bring their conflict to a focus they have been examined mainly within a narrow historical framework, the period 1890-1939 (defined by the two symbolic dates of the fall of Parnell and the death of Yeats), though there are some necessary excursions into a remoter past, especially in relation to Ireland. The underlying theme of the book is that no political solution has been or will be successful without a proper understanding of the intricacies of this interlocking pattern of cultures - Gaelic, English, Anglo-Irish, Ulster Protestant. The book is in essence an attempt to provide the historical basis for such an understanding." Previous owner's small stamp on front pastedown, a previous owner's name in ink and faint erased pencil marks on free front endpaper, very light liquid stain in top margin of page 19, minor edge wear, small corner bump, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor soiling on bottom of textblock. Dust jacket is price clipped, has light edge wear - small surface paper loss at bottom of flap-folds, light to moderate edge wrinkling, light rubbing, 1" closed knife cut on front panel - archivally taped.

San Diego Point Loma Publications 1980 091300435 Soft Cover Very Good -
159 pp, 8vo (9" H). "(A)n early series of class lectures given at Point Loma in 1913-14 - .We are introduced to a selection of words, in the explanation of which we perceive the broad strokes of a deep philosophy. Of speical interest is his method of teaching, a talking to a group of students, not labored or rigidly planned, but an extemporaneous outpouring. There is every indication that a long continuous course was envisioned. Style and content of these seven classes points to this, but no record of this course being resumed is to be found. We must therefore presume that other duties prevented its continuance; hence its abrupt end. But enough is here to be of use to the student and researcher - some things here said are not said in any other of the author's works. The lectures are published here verbatim as transcribed from the stenographic reports, only obvious typographical and other changes of a minimal nature having been made." Interior - previous owners stamp at top of title page, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - minor edge wear, light rubbing/minor soiling, soft small crease at top corner of rear cover - migrates into last few pages.
