Was Samuel de Champlain a secret agent for the Grail Dynasty, and did his ma ps and journals purposefully obscure the location of the Grail's secret refuge in Acadia? And, just before Nova Scotia was attacked by Sedgewick in 1654, was the Holy Grail again transported to a new haven - Montreal, founded by a mysterious se c r e t society called the Companie du Saint-Sacrement? BRITISH BUTCHERS AND BUNGLERS OF WORLD WAR ONE., Laffin, John.

214 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1841000124 B&w plates, maps/battle plans. "....a forceful and probing analysis of the British generals' leadership. For too long, Dr John Laffin maintains, the military reputation of the generals has not been critically enough examined, and he asks how those responsible for such catastrophic defeats were able to retain their commands. Haig, whose army suffered 60,000 casualties on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, was s till in command after five months more fighting and another 400,000 casualties. By the war's end the number of dead ran into millions - doggedly brave British Empire soldiers who, Dr Laffin believes, were killed, wounded or broken by commande r s w h o were vain, egocentric or incompetent. But the generals, who blamed the dead and junior in rank, cannot be excused on the grounds that there was 'nothing else that they could do'. Even now, seventy years after that 'Great War for Civili za ti o n' , t his book raises questions that are uncomfortable. Dr Laffin draws on the memories and writings of those who took part and quotes the judgements of other military historians to provide a lucid analysis of just what went wrong in the ge ner al s' lea der ship and how it resulted in such appalling and tragic losses - and concludes that they were not merely incompetent but uncaring. Controversial and uncompromising, this intelligent and important book is an invaluable addition t o th e hi sto ry of W orld War I and will be read by all interested in this period of history and its influence on succeeding military campaigns." Small bump at top corner of both boards. Dust jacket has wrinkling at top of flap-folds. Very Good /Very Good

MORRICE: A GREAT CANADIAN ARTIST REDISCOVERED., Laing, G. Blair. Introduction by Jean Sutherland Boggs.
12 Laing, G. Blair. Introduction by Jean Sutherland Boggs. MORRICE: A GREAT CANADIAN ARTIST REDISCOVERED.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1984 0771045689 / 9780771045684 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good James Wilson Morrice.
224 pp, 11 3/4" H. Profusely illustrated with colour reproductions. "James Wilson Morrice is one of the twentieth century's most talented and lyrical painters. Whether depicting a Quebec village in winter, a Paris cafe, or a North African market place, Morrice's vibrant colours and perfectly balanced compositions capture his subjects in a suspended timelessness. The story of (his) life is no less colourful than his paintings. The young James's passion for art took him in 1890, at the age of twenty-five, from his wealthy Montreal background to Paris. It was here, among other artists such as Matisse, and writers such as Somerset Maugham and Arnold Bennett, that he felt a true kinship. And it was not long before Morrice's paintings were seen in the great Salons of Paris, and sent to the Montreal Art Association and the Canadian Art Club in Toronto for exhibition. Laing's fascinating account reveals the complexity of Morrice's genius and gives a definitive picture of James Wilson Morrice - the man, the artist, and his work." Slight waviness at top/bottom edges of text block. Dust jacket has light toning on spine, flap-folds and some edges; one small edge tear archivally taped; minor edge wrinkling.

Collins, London, 1962, first edition.
189 pp, 8vo (8 1/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "The day that Alasdair was dragged off by the police to the factor's house, accused of writing an anonymous letter threatening murder to the laird, was the day of Lachlann Ban's return from prison. For the year is 1884 and the crofters in the small township of Skye are being oppressed to the limit of their endurance by the laird and his harsh factor. Already they have fought back by pulling down the laird's fine new wall; and now w i t h L a c h l ann Ban again at their head are determined to resist to the last the laird and his crippling reforms....Lachlann Ban was a bold leader and a fiery one. Who but he would have fought a pitched hand battle with the factor? Who but h e wo ul d h av e da re d to rescue a man from prison in Portree and then convey him safely in another man's coffin? Who but he would have gathered an army of men to march to the laird, their torches a ribbon of fire through the hills? Allan Campbe ll Mc Lea n' s new n ove l f or older boys and girls is filled with the conflicts and struggle of the times: the fierce antagonism between Lachlann Bann and the factor; the mounting tension of the men hidden on the hillside waiting to roll bould ers on the hea ds of the sol dier s i n the pass below; the treachery of those who betrayed them. And the characters in the story - Alasdair himself; Lachlann Ban; Alasdair's father; his embittered mother; the crippled tailor; the laird and his dark -hai red daug hte r wh o pr oves a rea l al ly - are memorably drawn." Dundurn Press, Toronto, 1996.
144 pp, 8vo (9" H), soft cover. ISBN 1550022644 B&w maps. "....seeks to provide illustrations of Arctic mysteries and fictions which often occur as a result of misconceptions of Arctic geography. The chapters are extremely varied in subject matt er, and conclusions are in the domain of speculation. The book begins with very early examples of northern travels starting with the probable adventures of Pytheas the Greek, Brendan the Irish monk and the four medieval odysseys of Adam of B r e m e n , Nicolas of Lynn, Prince Henry Sinclair and Zeno of Venice. The next chapter addresses misconceptions of polar environments, especially illusory land and visualization of mermaids and mermen. In addition, the book deals with polar m y th s su ch a s th e open polar sea which existed only in people's minds, but nevertheless had great influence on navigation and exploration. No account of polar enigmas would be complete without reference to the Franklin expedition, the possibl e fat e of his lo st sh ip s and the debate over whether his men committed cannibalism. The book concludes with a deliberation on whether Cook or Perry acutally did reach the North Pole, hinting that perhaps neither of them reached their objectiv e.
