2 Bergstein, Rachelle. WOMEN FROM THE ANKLE DOWN: THE STORY OF SHOES AND HOW THEY DEFINE US.
New York Harper 2012 0061969613 / 9780061969614 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Nami Matsuo Scott.
284 pp, 9 1/4" H. Small b&w illustrations. "What is it about a pair of shoes that so enchants women of all ages, demographics, political affiliations, and style tribes? Part social history, part fashion record, part pop-culture celebration, (this book) seeks to answer that question as it unfolds the story of shoes in the twentieth century. The tale begins in the rural village of Bonito, Italy, with a visionary young shoe-maker named Salvatore Ferragamo and ends in New York City with a fictional socialite and trend-setter named Carrie Bradshaw. Along the way it stops in Hollywood, where Judy Garland first slipped on her ruby slippers; New Jersey, where Nancy Sinatra heard something special in a song about boots; and the streets of Manhattan, where a transit-worker strike propelled women to step into cutting-edge athletic shoes. Beginnng with the well-heeled suffragettes in the 1910s, women have fought for greater freedom and mobility, a struggle that exploded in the 1960s with the women's liberation move-ment and culminated in the new millenium with our devotion to personal choice. Featuring interviews with designers, historians, and cultural experts, and a cast of real-life characters, from Marilyn Monroe to Jane Fonda, from Gwen Stefani to Manolo Blahnik, (it) is a lively, compelling look at the evolution of modern woman and the fashion that reflects - and has shaped - their lives." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine - also tiny tear at top of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top of hinges, minor rubbing.

Based on extensive research in primary source materials including Hudson's Bay Company documents, missionary records, and military and private papers, (this book) traces the crucial transition of the Pacific Northwest from a fur-trading outpost to an agricultural settlement - a process which also saw the shift from British to American jurisdiction in the area. Gibson explores the reasons for the development of farming, describes the localities where farming took place, and discusses the degree of its success or failure, placing particular emphasis on geographical factors such as terrain, climate, and soil type. The statistical material he has compiled adds a quantitative dimension to his findings and presents important new information about the fur trade west of the Rockies." A square of cardboard was tied to the last surviving button on the tramp's ragged overcoat and on the square was written the word 'Three'." 160 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0715378570 B&w photographs. "Packed with authentic atmosphere, the retreat and the desperate lifting of the weary soldiers is seen in its tragic entirety, often through first-hand reco llections of the men who were there. The story of Dunkirk is a dramatic epic of courage and confusion, resulting in a successful and often heroic evacuation....(Harris) describes in vivid detail how the evacuation developed, on a day-by-d a y b a s i s , and destroys more than one of the myths that have come to be associated with Dunkirk. However, the spirit, humour and drama that epitomised what came to be known as the 'spirit of Dunkirk' was, and is, undeniable. Illustrated wit h ma n y co nt em po ra r y photographs, this book provides a complete historical account of the lifting of the British expeditionary force in the first week of June 1940...." E. NESBIT: A BIOGRAPHY. REVISED WITH NEW MATERIAL., Moore, Doris Langley.
13 Moore, Doris Langley. E. NESBIT: A BIOGRAPHY. REVISED WITH NEW MATERIAL.
Philadelphia Chilton Books 1966 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good -
313 pp, 8 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "Publication of this first biography ever written about E. Nesbit (1858-1924), whose books for children have delighted readers young and old, is a literary event of major importance. Mrs. Langley Moore has written a new introduction to the present edition, telling a number of things that had to be omitted from the original work, when so many of E. Nesbit's contemporaries or members of her family were still alive. Also, the entire book has been revised and relevant material that either had to be left out originally, or has been discovered since, has been added. Edith Nesbit married Hubert Bland, a young journalist and enthusiastic Socialist, in 1880. He took the chair at the first meeting of the Fabian Society and both were active in the Fabian movement. When Bland, while ill, was defrauded by a business partner, Edith Nesbit was forced to earn the family's living. She began to write poems, short stories, and recitiations, and made hand painted Christmas cards. After fifteen years of literary hack work, in which she produced some thirty-three books, she hit her stride with the writing of 'The Treasure Seekers', the first of the stories about the irrepressible Bastable children. Among the other books that have made her a household favorite are 'The Wouldbegoods', 'Five Children and It', 'The House of Arden', and 'The Story of the Amulet'. (The author) has given us a remarkable portrait of the genesis of a writer, and the writer's world. In seeking out her information she contacted many of the most eminent literary and theatrical figures in England at the time." Minor toning to margins of pages, light toning and faint foxing mark on fore-edge of text block, minor soiling on bottom edge of boards. Dust jacket has minor edge wear, general light browning - more on spine and flap-folds, one very small edge tear sticker removal/soiling mark at top corner of front panel, very small foxing mark on rear panel, protected in a mylar sleeve.

THE WOMAN IN FASHION., Moore, Doris Langley.
14 Moore, Doris Langley. THE WOMAN IN FASHION.
London B. T. Batsford 1949 First Edition Hard Cover Good- Fair Felix Fonteyn, photographer.
184 pp, 10" H. B&w photographs, colour fronispiece shows Vanessa Redgrave in pink tafetta dress. "(The author) possesses what is probably the finest private collection of English clothing of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and she is also well known as an authority on the history and psychology of dress. (This book) makes use both of her collection and her expert knowledge, and in a particularly delightful way. The dresses have been photographed by Felix Fonteyn, as they were at the time when they were first made: that is, they are shown on living models and in appropriate settings. Set off by such interesting and distinguished women as Vivien Leigh, Ruth Draper, Margot Fonteyn, Moira Shearer, Beatrice Lillie, Googie Withers, Mai Zetterling, and many others well known on the stage, the films, and in similar spheres, the costumes (of c.1800 to 1926) 'come alive' in a way previously unknown either through old fashion plates or in the ordinary histories of costume. (Moore's) text is no less vivid and revealing than her illustrations. She enjoys the great advantage of writing as a woman, with a more than theoretical experience of feminine dress; and she shows herself to be an author of quite exceptional insight, sympathy, and expertise." Light browning to endpapers - small stain on rear pastedown, soft bump to top corner of pages, small bump at top corner of boards, light wrinkling at bottom of spine, scattered small areas of color fading on front board and on edges of boards, very small liquid stain on front board. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has very small stain on inside of each panel, moderate edge wear/wrinkling with some small tears and tiny chips, light fading and moderate wear/wrinkling on spine, light soiling and light liquid mark on rear panel, protected in a mylar sleeve.

BELL AND BALDWIN: THEIR DEVELOPMENT OF AERODROMES AND HYDRODROMES AT BADDECK, NOVA SCOTIA., Parkin, J.H.
16 Parkin, J.H. BELL AND BALDWIN: THEIR DEVELOPMENT OF AERODROMES AND HYDRODROMES AT BADDECK, NOVA SCOTIA.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1964 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good
555 pp, 9 1/4" H. Map endpapers, b&w photographs, tables (several fold-out). "(P)resents a detailed chronicle of the fascinating experiments in aerial flight and with hydrofoil craft conducted by Dr. (Alexander Graham) Bell and his engineering assistant and collaborators, Frederick Walker (Casey) Baldwin, at Baddeck, Nova Scotia. Bell was the chairman and Baldwin the chief engineer of the Aerial Experiment Association (1907-9), a group founded, inspired, and financed by Mrs. Bell: the successes of the Association, were based largely on logical, step-by-step development under the guiding genius of Dr. Bell. The detailed, day-by-day records of the group's operations kept by Dr. Bell make abundantly clear that his scientific and technical contributions, and his guidance and criticism, were of great importance to the development of aviation and hydrofoils. His keen analytical and deductive mind was at its best in analysing failures and propounding remedies, as in the suggestion of the aileron following the crash of the 'Red Wing'. Dr. Parkin provides here a brief description of Bell's amazing kite experiments, which extended over many years, and led to his powered- flight projects; and, to place the work of Bell and Baldwin in proper perspective, and to enable their accomplishments to be assessed, he has included a brief record of the prior art, including descriptions of the machines, early designers, builders, and pilots, including the Wrights, the Voisins, Bleriot, and Santos Dumont. He also presents the hitherto unpublished details of the remarkable development of hydrofoil craft at Baddeck, culminating after many years, in the spectacular achievement, in 1919, of 70.85 miles per hour, by the HD-4, the fastest craft afloat at that time." *Pages 463 through 494 plus one fold-out table are duplicated* Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine, one small edge tear a few tiny edge tears, minor rubbing, protected in a mylar sleeve.

PUBLIC SERVANT, SECRET AGENT: THE ELUSIVE LIFE AND VIOLENT DEATH OF AIREY NEAVE., Routledge, Paul.
18 Routledge, Paul. PUBLIC SERVANT, SECRET AGENT: THE ELUSIVE LIFE AND VIOLENT DEATH OF AIREY NEAVE.
London Fourth Estate 2002 1841552447 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+
392 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "On 30 March 1979 for the first time in more than 100 years an MP was killed in the precincts of the House of Commons. And his was a very violent death: a bomb, triggered by the ascent of his car up the ramp from the underground car park, detonated enough explosives to sever his legs from his body and render him unrecognisable. Airey Neave was a loyal Tory backbencher who had last held ministerial office in 1959. What, then, had he done to deserve such a vicious and bloody attack? Neave was an extraordinary man. Eton and Oxford educated, he served in the Royal Artillery and was captured and ultimately imprisoned in Colditz. He became the first Briton to escape. On the strength of his experience he was recruited by the security services to a divison of MI6 and was an advisor on escape and insurrection in occupied Europe until the end of the second world war. (After his work at the Nuremberg trials he) moved into open politics, as MP for Abingdon from 1953, without ever losing his taste for the covert. A shadowy figure on the right of the Conservative party, he ploted the overthrow of Ted Heath and the installation of Margaret Thatcher. (When Neave asked Thatcher for Northern Ireland, the) intelligence services found they had one of their men in a pivotal role at a crucial moment. To Irish Nationalists, Neave was a threat that could not be allowed to thrive. His life and death were enacted in the deep shadows just behind the glare of public life." 19 Snow, Hank. With Jack Ownbey and Bob Burris. THE HANK SNOW STORY.
Urbana University of Illinois Press / Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame 1994 0252020898 / 9780252020896 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
555 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "(Traces Hank Snow's) life from humble beginnings, through his emergence as an entertainer in Canada, the United States, and throughout the world, to his stature as one of the most influential figures in country music today. But more than a rags-to-riches memoir, this book presents Hank's life and career in his own voice, with remarkable candor and incredible detail. It provides the first extensive look at the early development of country music in Canada, reveals the inner workings of the music industry (including Hank's vital and unsung role in launching Elvis Presley's career), frankly discusses the nonglamorous side of stardom, and offers the reflections of an outspoken artist who has been professionally involved with country music for nearly sixty years. Through Ernest Tubb's intercession, he made his debut on Nashville's Grand Ole Opry. Disheartened by the lack of audience response, Hank nearly abandoned his dream. Then he recorded a song he had written, 'I'm Movin' On'. It climbed to the top of the charts, staying at number one for twenty-nine weeks. More hits followed, and his life and career changed forever. Over the years, Hank has entertained servicepeople on military bases in Korea, Europe, and Vietnam. Remembering his own (difficult) childhood, he established the Hank Snow Foundation for the Prevention of Child Abuse. (He was) elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame and to the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame." Minor twist to spine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling otherwise clean and bright.
