2 Allen, Gillian. YESTERDAY'S TOWN: WELLINGTON. A DIARY OF A WEST COUNTRY TOWN IN THE 19th CENTURY.
Buckingham Barracuda 1987 0860232921 / 9780860232926 Limited Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
124 pp, small 4to (10 7/16" H). Number 368 of a limited edition. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "(I)t is the detail of the 19th century record which attracts us most; the people who lived in specific houses like the Millers, Langleys and Merediths; the controversy about the three posts outside the White Hart Inn; the shops that changed from bank to fishmonger, from watchmaker to cobbler, from Bell Inn to basketmaker; the man who dug a canal in his garden to employ poor people; the ten-year-old who died when her pinny caught fire; the horse that took nine men to the gallows. Here too is the fire brigade whose captain refused entry to his own team as his cottage blazed away; the riots when a cemetery was proposed; the earliest chapels built and closed; Ann Pain, who stole a bullock's heart on St. Valentine's Day; Mr Marks, who lost 50 Pounds at Wellington Fair; elderly Maria Strippling, sentenced to seven days' labour for pinching threepennorth of hay; and the 4,703 tramps who came to Wellington in 1865. Transport changed the town, when the turnpikes, canal, railway and finally motorcar came. The first car owner was heavily fined; the first acceptable motor hit the Town Hall. Taverns prospered, and there were 75 at one time or another. Thirteen survive. The greatest change of all came with the Great War - 'our old world has gone forever' said the local 'rag'. That world is recreated (here) - in a fluent, fascinating and fact-packed narrative and some 200 pictures, many of them rare, and most unique to this book." Book is slightly cocked. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top edge, a few small faint indentations on panels, minor rubbing.

"Controlling one of the greatest forces in international affairs, the Director-General of the B.B.C. has attained a position of power second only to that of a Prime Minister. He directs a machine that produces mass-education, mass-entertainment, and mass-information for continuous consumption by millions of the peoples of this country and every overseas nation of the Commonwealth. (His life story) is here told in full for the first time, and makes sensational revelations of the career and character of this remarkable, but unknown man. (It) is superimposed on the background of the romance of radio itself, and which clearly shows how, for this man of destiny, the man and his destiny were being developed on parallel lines. Interesting glimpses are given of those who were creating the new science in readiness for the Reith era, and fascinating disclosures are made from inside the B.B.C. itself." 247 pp, 9 1/4" H. "In 1921, a 'little band' of disparate activists formed the Communist Party of Canada. Civil authorities across the country reacted with fear, even though R.C.M.P. officers described the party as 'a handful of ineffective English-speaking leaders, a negligible French-speaking element, an isolated Jewish element, with the agitators drawn from the Finnish and Ukrainian immigrants, whose benevolent societies paid for the Party's maintenance'. (This book) documents the ensuing clashes between the Canadian communists and Canada's political and legal establishments, from 1928 to 1932. Dr. Betcherman skillfully recreates the excitement of street fights and court cases, culminating in the spectacular trial of communist Tim Buck. (She) interviewed Communist Party members, Crown attorneys and Defence lawyers of the period, and was granted access to rare transcripts of trials, appeals and correspondence in compiling this, the first detailed and thoroughly entertaining history of these events." THE MAKING OF THE ENGLISH BIBLE., Bobrick, Benson.
6 Bobrick, Benson. THE MAKING OF THE ENGLISH BIBLE.
Weidenfeld & Nicolson, London, 2001, first British edition.
376 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0297607723 "(T)races the story across the Protestant-Catholic divide of the sixteenth century as the struggle to complete a vernacular Bible was fought among competeing factions. As ( the author) tells in his enthralling history it was the culmination of centuries of work by various translators and a committee of scholars who in 1604 were brought together to collaborate on what became known as the King James version. Their t r a n s lation - substantially based on the work of John Wycliffe and William Tyndale and others - shaped English literature and speech for centuries giving us what have become such commonly used expressions as: 'labour of love', 'a thorn in the fle sh ', ' th e root of all evil', 'the fat of the land', 'the sweat of thy brow', 'to cast pearls before swine' and 'the shadow of death' among a host of others. (This book) shows the profound effect the English Bible had on law and society. By giv ing ev ery li terate person access to the sacred text it helped to foster the spirit of inquiry through reading and reflection. Once individuals were free to interpret the word of God according to the light of their own understanding, they began to q uest ion the authority of their inherited institutions, both religious and secular. This led to the reformation within the Church, the rise of constitutional government in England and ultimately the end of the divine right of kings. In Benson Bobr ick's vie w th e English Civil War was fought in the light (and shadow) of such ideas, culminating in the Glorious Revolution of 1688. 'The Making of the English Bible' is about a crucial epoch in the history of Christianity, about the Engli sh lan guage and s ociet y, and about a book that changed the course of human events." Minor indentation on rear board, a few very small bumps (one with tiny tear) at top edge of front board. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top of hinges and fl ap-fold s, one tiny tear a rchivally taped, tiny corner crease at top corner of front flap. Very Good/Very Good+

In this lively and perhaps contentious survey, (the authors) explore the political and economic forces that shaped this era of change. Beginning at the turn of the century, they consider the status of Canada in the empire and the world, the burgeoning growth of its economy, and the development of social and labour problems, up to the eruption of war in 1914. They discuss the political currents running through Canada during two wars, the interwar economic boom and depression, and the plans for post-war reconstruction, and assess the impact of these and other events on Canada's political, economic, social, and cultural institutions." Toronto University of Toronto Press / The osgoode Society for Canadian Legal History 1994 0802006566 / 9780802006561 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
436 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "(This) portrait of James Chalmers McRuer (1890-1985), one of Canada's most outstanding jurists, sets out to discover the character of the man who played a key role in the evolution of Canadian law. His career of more than fifty years included service on the Archambault Royal Commission on Penal Reform from 1936 to 1938. He was appointed judge on the Ontario Court of Appeal in 1944, chief justice of the Ontario High Court in 1945, and from 1964 to 1971 he was head of the Royal Commission Inquiry into Civil Rights. From 1964 to 1977 he was chairman and later vice-chairman of the Ontario Law Reform Commission. The driving spirit behind McRuer was his passion for justice, rising from his conviction that the justice system should serve the oppressed, regardless of their ability to pay. As a law reformer, McRuer saw a pressing need to adapt the law so that it could better serve all people in the changed conditions of the twentieth century. He possessed a sharp sensitivity to the often hidden injustices existing in an advanced industrial society and a bureaucratic state." Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling.

Both lauded the influence of the virtuous Christian woman, used the same female r ole models from the Bible, and saw the home as the locus of the construction of female piety. Yet each group castigated the other for having antifemale values. Toronto Fitzhenry & Whiteside 1976 0889024014 / 9780889024014 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good Signed by Author
177 pp, 9 1/4" H. Signed by author on title page, under printed name. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "Between 1896 and 1914, the Canadian government carried out a vigorous programme in central Europe, Britain, and the United States to persuade people to immigrate to the Canadian west, 'The Last Best West'. Hundreds of thousands of prospective settlers from diverse and distinctive ethnic backgrounds responded, leading to an extraordinary mass migration which changed the face of Canada. This great campaign to populate the west is presented here by Jean Bruce, in a compelling and moving selection of more than 190 photographs of the period, together with short related texts. Her superb pictorial history gives a fine sense of scope and perspective to this vital period in the growth of Canada. We see all the paraphernalia of the government advertising campaign, the journey from the setllers' homelands, the first prairie homesteads, the development of western cities and industries and, above all, the people whose lives transformed - and were transformed by - the Canadian west." 13 Burley, David G. A PARTICULAR CONDITION IN LIFE: SELF-EMPLOYMENT AND SOCIAL MOBILITY IN MID-VICTORIAN BRANTFORD, ONTARIO.
McGill-Queen's University Press, Kingston, (1994), Ist printing.
309 pp, 8vo, HC in dust jacket. "...offers a new perspective on industrial capitalism and class formation in Canada. Using Brantford, Ontario, as a case study, he provides a cultural analysis of the business community during the mid-nineteenth cen tury and shows that, because self-employment was so pervasive, the impact of industrializatin was particularly striking. Self-employed businessmen were forced to try to locate themselves in an emerging class system that often contradic t e d t r a d i t i o n al Victorian social ideals of independence and manliness. Burley's exploration of the tensions behind the conflicting values - tension both between myth and reality and within the bourgois world view of itself - is an impor ta nt a d di ti on t o th e li te rature on business behaviour and Victorian cultural history." There is a non-authorial inscription on the half title page from one couple to another, stating "Father De C. is a good friend of ours, we hope you enjoy his story". "This is (the story of 'The People Beyond'), occasionally poignant, often shocking, but always heroic, from the opening scene of birth in an isolated iglu lit only by a flickering blubber lamp to the final disaster wrought by an epidemic that rages through a whole encampment. Raymond de Coccola was a missionary among these people for twelve years. In surroundings that could not have been more different from his native Corsica, he resolved to learn to understand the people by entering fully into their lives.
