Weidenfeld and Nicolson, London, 1968.
251 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w maps. "The attempts by the Western powers to intervene in Russia after the Bolshevik coup d'etat of 1917, and the abortive attempt of the Red Army to destroy Poland, are subjects which have be en badly neglected by historians. As a result of this new research many hitherto accepte d i d e a s o f the intervention are challenged and a clearer perspective is given to this period of history. The most obscure phase of the intervention, November 1917 to August 1918, is thoroughly dealt with, and the place of Japan and the Czec ho s lo va k Co rp s i n the military strategy of the Allies is examined. 9 Chidsey, Donald Barr. VALLEY FORGE.
Crown, New York, 1959.
190 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "A vividly exciting, on-the-scene account of the most crucial winter of the American Revolution. You accompany the ragged, hungry American troops as they leave Philadelphia to spend the winter at Valley Forge. You struggle up the hill, help clear the underbrush, and fell the trees to build huts and fortifications. You endure the cold and the hunger, the sickness and the boredom, the lack of the most rudimentary convenie nces, and you marvel at the spirit that keeps your fellow Americans from deserting. In contrast, you see the relative luxury of the circumstances enjoyed by the British troops in Philadelphia. Then you see the start of the moves that wil l u l t i m a t e ly result in victory: the near disruption of the British fleet at Philadelphia by the world's first submarine and floating mines; experienced foreign officers joining the American cause; the drilling of troops for effective comba t, an d th e de cl ar at ion of war by France. Finally, you share in the long awaited triumph when camp is disbanded and the American army chases the British across New Jersey...." 200 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w photographs. "(Shirley Ryce) tells of her upbringing as the spoiled daughter of a local bookie and card-game organizer, of her early marriage, and of the fateful meeting that turned a bored housewife and mother into a mob mistress. (She) moved in organized crime circles for almost two decades, and had many mob affairs. Although she knew little of the mobsters' 'business', she saw a great deal of the mob at play. Her break with the Papalias (Hamilton, Ontario crime family) and their cohorts, and her co-operation with the police, marked a dramatic change in ther life, and in 'Mob Mistress' she looks back at who and what she was with self-deprecating frankness. At the same time, she and Dubro both give an informed and clear-eyed view of her former 'playmates' - and of the law-enforcement officers who fight them daily." BODYSNATCHERS: A HISTORY OF THE RESURRECTIONISTS 1742-1832., Fido, Martin.
13 Fido, Martin. BODYSNATCHERS: A HISTORY OF THE RESURRECTIONISTS 1742-1832.
Weidenfeld and Nicolson, London, 1988.
184 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0297793934 B&w illustrations. "From 1740 to 1832, freshly buried corpses were dug up and surreptitiously hawked to surgeons and anatomists in London and Edinburgh to dissect for research and teaching purposes. The resurrection trade brought together Fellows of the Royal Society and slum-dwelling criminals in an unholy alliance. By the beginning of the nineteenth century, the illicit trade had become one of London's most effic i e n t l y o rganized departments of crime, with gang-leader Ben Crouch securing a virtual monopoly of delivery to half the teaching hospitals. In Scotland, several surgeons of great eminence loved the adventure of association with desperadoes and w il li ng ly a c co mpanied them on their nocturnal excavations. Not surprisingly, there was great public consternation about the activities of the bodysnatchers, but it was only when Burke and Hare introduced murder as a means of acquiring 'sub jec ts' th at the au th ori ties acted to eradicate the ghoulish practice. Martin Fido's book is an enthralling study of a strange byway of criminal low life. It provides the first full and accurate accounts of murderers Helen Torrence and Jean Wald ie, Bish op and Head an d El iza Ross. With sketches of the great surgeons who encouraged and sought to control the trade, 'Bodysnatchers' will interest many in the medical profession and social historians as well as devotees of the true crim e gen re." 15 Gossage, Carolyn. A QUESTION OF PRIVILEGE: CANADA'S INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS.
Toronto Peter Martin 1977 088778156X / 9780887781568 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
301 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "(T)he first comprehensive examination of the independent schools and their role in Canadian society. Based on extensive research in neglected historical records and on hundreds of interviews from coast to coast, it documents the evolution of fifty schools across the country, sketches some of the famous (and infamous) headmasters and mistresses, and reveals the often unconventional beginnings of these Establishment establishments. No dry academic history, (it) concentrates on the people and the colour behind the grey walls: the milkman who became a headmaster by soliciting students on his rounds; the seven Anglican sisters who financed their school by selling used clothing; the school that acquired its property, an opulent nineteenth-century mansion, at a cut-rate price from a bankrupt social climber. (This) is a delight for everyone interested in Canadian education and social history." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, two tiny corner creases. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, tiny tear at bottom of spine, two tiny scuffs at top of spine, a few tiny dents on front hinge.

17 Knox, Olive. THE YOUNG SURVEYOR.
Ryerson Press, Toronto, 1967, reprint.
164 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers. "What boy or girl wouldn't like the adventure of surveying in the Rockies when pack-mules, gold miners, and railway surveyors followed trails known only to the Indians? Bruce, the greenhorn from San Francisco, and Josette, the French girl from Edmonton, and her half-brother Mike had that exciting experience when they accompanied Edward Jarvis on his Canadian Pacific Railway surveys in 1874-1875. During the summer the two boy s endured the hardships and adventures of an exploratory survey from Kamloops to Tete Jaune Cach, then an instrumental survey along the North Fraser River to Fort George. A rock slide, plunge into a treacherous river, forest fire, cougar a t t a c k , s n ow avalanche and losing the trail are some of the dramatic events in this book for both boys and girls. That was the life of the first Canadian Pacific surveyors, who pioneered the trail-finding so that the Atlantic could be link ed t o th e Pa ci f ic w ith steel." Minor soiling at top of front hinge. Ernest H Shepard, 'Kipper' to his family and friends, is perhaps best known - and loved - for the children's illustrations he did for the work of A.A. Milne and for his incomparable drawings for Kenneth Grahame's 'The Wind in the Willows'. His output, however, was considerable and altogether he illustrated somewhere near to a hundred books. Over a period of fifty years he also had weekly drawings in Punch magazine and these too are represented here."
