Seaham, Durham The People's History 2000 1902527321 / 9781902527321 First Edition Soft Cover Very Good
128 pp, 9 7/16" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. " 'Our Village' reflects the pains and joys of the people of the Durham Coalfield during a period of drastic change. It is a selection from a series of community publications the author has been involved in over the last 20 years. The general idea behind all these projects has been to let the people speak for themselves in conversation and in their songs and poems. Mixed with over 130 vivid photographs of their local communities, what comes across is a passionate, and often agonising, account of the social upheaval County Durham has experienced. The memories, poems and photographs will interest and enthuse young and old alike. There is gloom aplenty but also wit and vitality in what people have to say. From the banks of the Derwent to the Weardale hills, from the beaches of Easington to proud Westoe, they tell their tales and laugh and cry." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very minor edge wear, very small corner crease and minor rubbing on rear cover.

256 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs. "Examines the history of the Chemistry Department at the University of Toronto from its beginnings in 1843, when it was housed in simple quarters in the parliament buildings on Front St reet and had just one faculty member. During the founding era (1843-1920) three British gentlemen professors guided the department through four homes; between 1920 and 1960 three Canadian heads built a highly influential department. Since 1960 eight chairmen have effectively managed a growing and diverse department while it ventured into exciting new fields and emerging sub-disciplines. New faculty, new programs, new locations, and a Nobel Prize have been highlights of the past few decades. With the completion of recent renovations and additions (such as the Davenport Research Building and Garden), with its distinguished faculty, top-rate staff, and excellent students, and with its dazzling array of equipment to support research, the department's future indeed looks bright." "Landover was a genuine magic kingdom, with fairy folk and wizardry, just as the advertisement had promised. But after he purchased it, Ben Holiday (former Chicago lawyer) learned that there were a few details the ad had failed to mention. The kingdom was a ruin. The Barons refused to recognize a king, and the peasants were without hope. A dragon was laying waste the countryside, while an evil witch plotted to destroy everything. Ben's only followers were the incompetent Court Magician; Abernathy, the talking dog who served as Court Scribe; and the lovely Willow - but she had a habit of putting down roots in the moonlight and turning into a tree. The Paladin, legendary champion of the Kings of Landover, seemed to be only a myth and an empty suit of armor - ." BLOKES: THE BAD BOYS OF ENGLISH LITERATURE., Castronovo, David.
20 Castronovo, David. BLOKES: THE BAD BOYS OF ENGLISH LITERATURE.
Continuum, New York, 2009.
197 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 9780826428325 "They came from unpromising places and unglamorous backgrounds. They crashed the Establishment party in one generation, raided the citadels of culture, and brought their idioms, themes, and passions to the center of British life. The blokes were writers who revitalized British drama, fiction, poetry, and criticism. This book is the story, told in a series of profiles, of New Britannia. The cast of characters includes playwrights John Osborne and Arnold Wesker, novelist Kingsley Amis, critic Kenneth Tynan, poet Philip Larkin, fiction writer Alan Sillitoe, plus lesser-known figures such as John Braine, David Storey, Stan Barstow, and Keith Waterhouse - up to more contemporary writers like Martin Amis and Nick Hornby. The central idea of this book is how these writers, and others, transformed British heritage - how they worked with the materials of their own backgrounds, the class system, tradition, and artistic convention to make new art. They took their place in a long line of writers who thrived on grit: Daniel Defoe, Charles Dickens, Bernard Shaw, D.H. Lawrence. (It) is an entertaining and insightful survey of a group of disparate writers who had a profound and enduring impact upon British literary culture." Very light rubbing on boards, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, tiny tear at top of rear flap-fold, minor rubbing. Very Good+/Very Good
