Vancouver UBC Press 1995 0774805382 / 9780774805384 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+ Paul Kane.
158 pp, 10 1/4" H x 10 1/4" D. Colour and b&w reproductions. "Determined to document the lives and customs of the Native people of the Northwest before contact with white settlers changed them forever, the Canadian artist Paul Kane set out in 1845 to cross the continent 'with no companions but my portfolio and a box of paints, my gun and a stock of ammunition'. Travelling by canoe and snowshoe, on foot and on horseback via the Hudson's Bay Company fur trade brigade routes, he made his way from the Great Lakes to the Pacific coast and back again. When he returned to Toronto in the fall of 1848, he brought back some five hundred field sketches and a remarkable collection of artifacts, which he used as raw material for one hundred oil paintings depicting scenes of Native life. (The authors) recreate Kane's heroic journey and bring to life the people and places he encountered. Their narrative supplies the historical context to illuminate his travels, while frequently drawing on Kane's own words from his diary and published journal." Toronto Fitzhenry & Whiteside / City of Toronto 1983 0889027129 / 9780889027121 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
199 pp, 11 1/4" H. (B)rings together reproductions of over 170 paintings, drawings, watercolours and prints, in which 130 individual artists have interpreted aspects of the city of Toronto, from its incorporation in 1834 right up to the present day. Although organized in five chronological sections, it is not simply an illustrated history of the city. Rather it is a gallery of pictures accompanied by explanatory texts. Special emphasis has been given to new and unfamiliar material, and over 100 of the pictures in the book have never been reproduced before. Care has also been taken to reflect the ethnic, religious, social and cultural diversity of the city. The big names are here, among them such figures as Paul Kane, Sanford Fleming and Robert Harris from the Victorian period, several members of the Group of Seven, and more recent masters such as Jack Bush and David Milne. But here also are a host of less famous artists: some city residents, some passing visitors, some anonymous, some amateurs whose enthusiasm was greater than their talent. All, however, in their own ways, have made a vital contribution to our record of Toronto as it was and is." Minor scuff on bottom edge of front board, book slightly curved. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, very light edge wrinkling, three small edge tears archivally taped, slight waviness to back panel.

THE LAST BUFFALO: THE STORY OF FREDERICK ARTHUR VERNER, PAINTER OF THE CANADIAN WEST., Murray, Joan.
14 Murray, Joan. THE LAST BUFFALO: THE STORY OF FREDERICK ARTHUR VERNER, PAINTER OF THE CANADIAN WEST.
Toronto Pagurian 1984 0889321302 / 9780889321304 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good Frederick Arthur Verner.
192 pp, 10 7/8" H11 3/4" D. B&w and colour reproductions, b&w photographs. "Frederick Arthur Verner was one of the great artists of western North America in the nineteenth century. (He) was born in Halton County, Ontario, in 1836, (and) lived through the period when the Canadian West was being tamed and settled, the fur trade was coming to an end, and the Indians were submitting to the treaties. He had a glimpse of how it had been at an earlier period, and his paintings, most frequently of Indian and buffalo subjects, typically combine careful observation with an Arcadian vision of a lost era, and are among the most evocative works of Canadian nineteenth century art. (This) is the first major book to be published on Frederick Arthur Verner. (Joan Murray presents) a vivid and far more detailed account of his life than has ever been given before, and in surveying the whole range of his work as an artist, gives it a fresh and sensitive new interpretation." Very minor edge wear, small area of shelf soiling on bottom of text block. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - moderate at top of spine, small faint water stain at bottom inside of spine, three very small dents on rear panel and one on spine, minor rubbing.

A CONCISE HISTORY OF CANADIAN PAINTING. SECOND (EXPANDED) EDITION., Reid, Dennis.
15 Reid, Dennis. A CONCISE HISTORY OF CANADIAN PAINTING. SECOND (EXPANDED) EDITION.
Toronto Oxford University Press 1988 0195406648 / 9780195406641 Second (expanded) Edition. Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
418 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w and colour illustrations. "This Second Edition covers painting to 1980. A long final chapter treats a crucial fifteen years when there developed in Canada a tremendous interest in other art forms and an apparent falling off of interest in painting. In fact the cry was hear - throughout the western world - that painting was dead. It turned out, however, that this was far from true. Dennis Reid discusses the work of established artists who produced steadily in the period - including Jack Bush, Jack Chambers, Greg Curnoe, Gershon Iskowitz, John Meredith, Guido Molinari, Jack Shadbolt, and Claude Tousignant - as well as new arrivals on the scene who have since joined the ranks of leading Canadian artists. Among the more recent painters discussed are David Bolduc, John Boyle, David Craven, Paterson Ewen, Ivan Eyre, Yves Gaucher, John Hall, Ron Martin, Michael Morris, Norval Morrisseau, Christopher Pratt, Shirley Wiitasalo, and Tim Zuck. Enriched by this overview, and by many additions to the original text, (this) is the widest-ranging and most authoritiative handbook available. Lucid, interesting, and informative, it is still a pleasure to read from first to last." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very small bump on bottom edge of both boards. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

16 Woodcock, George. A PICTURE HISTORY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA.
Edmonton Hurtig 1980 0888301855 / 9780888301857 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
240 pp, 11 1/4" H. "With almost four hundred (b&w) illustrations - which include paintings, drawings, maps, and original documents as well as a splendid section of fascinating photographs - the story of British Columbia is presented here in all its exciting contrast. In telling the story of Canada's western-most province, George Woodcock has vividly caught its unique character. (He) presents the varied personalities who shaped the province: Canadian fur traders and British naval captains; genteel citizens of nineteenth-century Victoria and brawling miners in Barkerville; high-minded missionaries and hard-living railroad builders; land speculators, farmers, politicians, journalists, industrialists, and of course the original inhabitants, the Coast Indians with their rich cultural traditions. (This book) spans the whole range from the age of the dinosaurs to the politics of the 1980s, and it includes (many) fascinating details. History comes alive as, picture by picture, Woodcock traces the development of a small settlement on Vancouver Island into the thriving province we know today." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear, minor edge wrinkling, very light rubbing with a few tiny scuffs on rear panel.
