HURRICANE AT WAR., Bowyer, Chaz. Foreword by Group Captain T.P. Gleave. Dust jacket art by Rex Flood.
1 Bowyer, Chaz. Foreword by Group Captain T.P. Gleave. Dust jacket art by Rex Flood. HURRICANE AT WAR.
Ian Allan, Shepperton, 1974, first edition.
160 pp, 11 1/4" H, hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0711005648 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "The Hawker Hurricane has a permanent niche in the annals of military aviation history as the world's first operational eight-gun monoplane fighter and the RAF's first front-line fighter to achieve more than 300mph in level flight. But it has received little credit for its subsequent lion's share of the defence of the United Kingdom during the 1940 Battle of Britain, and its later serv ice in a score of fighting roles across every theatre of operations during the 1939-45 war. In this book the author sets out to redress this omission in due recognition of the Hurricane's magnificent record. With a collation of authentic, firs t - h a nd impressions and experiences by the men who flew and serviced the Hurricane, backed by a unique collection of specially selected photographs, many from private sources, he has recreated the genuine atmosphere of Hurricane operations. This a ma lg am of text and photographs traces the story of the Hurricane and its crews from the first prototype and pre-1939 service to France 1940; through the Battle of Britain; in the frozen wastes of North Russia; over beleagured Malta; across Sic ily an d G ree ce and as far afield as the Burmese jungle. There are pilots' accounts of low-level bombing sorties covering the disastrous Dieppe invasion, a personal story by the only fighter pilot of World War II to be awarded the Victoria Cross , an d pi ctor ial sections illustrating the armament, markings and, especially, the men who knew the Hurricane best - the crews." Multiple creases at bottom of pages 27 thru 40. very small crease/bump at top corner of pages 83 thru 102, light wrin kling at t op/bo ttom of spine, one tiny corner bump, small shallow bump and a tiny scuff at top edge of rear board. Military and press photographers, propagandists, camera-wielding soldiers and civilians - all took the opportunity to record the tumultuous events of 1939-45. (This book) features 900 clearly captioned images selected from a wide variety of sources. Every major theatre of conflict is covered, from the icy seas of the Arctic C i r c l e to the jungles of the South Pacific, from the deserts of North Africa to the steppes of Russia. "A financial disaster prevented (Sir Michael Bruce) from following the family tradition of becoming an officer in the crack Royal Regiment known as 'The Gunners', so he enlisted i n the British South African Police. At seventeen, he shot his first man; at eighteen he hunted a double-murderer across the velds of Rhodesia. By the time he was twenty-four he had fought (and was twice wounded) at ill-fated Gallipoli and o n t h e w estern front through the Great War of 1914-19. Excitement dogged his footsteps as he sailed round the Horn in a windjammer; fought in a Brazilian revolution; crossed the Andes on foot; was nearly killed in a stampede of wild cattle; and w a s th e s ol e survivor of a gold-seeking hunt in the Amazon. Back in England, jobless, he did a stint as a reporter on a gossip 'sheet'; became a stunt actor, then press agent, in the movies; and in 1938, on the continent, established an under gro un d for J ew s f leeing from Hitler's persecution, subsequently himself falling into the hands of the Gestapo. At Dunkirk in World War II, Sir Michael ferried British soldiers across the Channel, then got into the RAF - and into more hair-rai sing in ci dent s.. .." 128 pp, small 4to (10 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0879382864 "The enemies were numerous. The jungle heat and the broad sea, the North Vietnamese Air Force and their arch ace Colonel Tomb, the MiG-17s and MiG-21s. Points on the Ameri can side were our elite pilots, aircraft and weapons: the Thunderchiefs, Crusaders and, of course, Phantoms. The air battles of the Vietnam War were fierce; the victors earned their wings and the kill markings emblazoned on their planes. (Th i s b o o k) spotlights the duels between America's pilots and the MiGs in the skies over Southeast Asia. Most of all, this is a book about airplanes. Here are the Phantoms Colonel Robin Olds piloted to score four kills. The intrepid Skyhawk whi ch d o wn ed a MiG-17 with an unguided air-to-ground missile. And F-4 number 155880 which finally blew Hanoi's Colonel Tomb out of the sky, earning its pilot ace status. Here are the men and machines that flew Rolling Thunder and Linebacker I a nd II. Garden City, New York Nelson Doubleday 1979 Book Club Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Greg Beecham drawings. Maps by Alan McKnight.
240 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w drawings, maps. "They watched and waited in nervewracking silence attack-ing only when stung. From treetops, from hostile beaches, from jungle camps, they saw it all and radioed what they saw - their network covering more than a half million square miles of island and ocean in the Japanese-held South Pacific. Hunted by enemy patrols, hounded by disease, starvation and sweltering heat, they risked torture and death from the heart of a Japanese-occupied tropical hell. Here are stories of incredible daring and brilliant leadership - of a hand-picked and highly unorthodox band of heroes who preferred the teeming jungle to the crowded regimentation of camp and office - told with gripping immediacy by the officer who led them. Follow the exploits of men like C.L. Page, the Australian planter whose reporting of the Japanese landing of Rabaul saved Allied lives, yet sealed his own fate - Lieutanant D.C. Horton, who hid 2,000 feet up on the mountainside overlooking the Japanese airfield at Munda and reported every aircraft that landed or took off - Blue Harris, a leader whose cool resourcefulness and legendary escapes were known throughout the islands." Dust jacket has minor edge wear, one tiny tear with old tape - two others archivally taped, very light browning to spine, light soiling and rubbing marks - mainly on rear panel, light remainder spray at bottom edge of flaps.

London John Murray 1980 0719537401 / 9780719537400 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
310 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w photographs, maps, drawings. "(Alex Henshaw) had the luck to grow up in the '20s and '30s during the golden age of flying and thanks to his father's generous encouragement it was not long before he had his own Gipsy Moth. From that moment there was no looking back. The Blue Riband of flying in the British Isles between the two World Wars was the King's Cup: Henshaw set his heart on it, developing a technique of racing which extracted the very maximum from his aircraft: first the Comper Swift and then the DH Leopard Moth. Parallel with his search for speed was an obsession with making accurate landfalls, and he developed this blind-flying talent deliberately in a flying partnership with his father on many carefully planned long-distance survey flights. His exciting apprenticeship in these two skills was crowned by the acquisition of the Percival Mew Gull G-AEXF in 1937. After many initial successes with the machine Henshaw became associated with Jack Cross of Essex Aero Ltd at Gravesend who became primarily responsible for the racing and long distance preparations. First fruits of this partnerships was victory in the King's Cup of 1938 at a speed that was the fastest of any winning aircraft at any time. This was closely followed by an amazing solo flight to Cape Town and back in February 1939 establishing several solo records that still stand today, over forty years later. This feat of navigation and airmanship must surely be one of man's greatest flights - 12,754 miles over desert, sea and jungle in a single-engined light aircraft. Alex Henshaw tells his story in a vivid style that puts you at the heart of all his battles and adventures." Small light bump at top of rear hinge, slight waviness to edges of text block. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top of rear hinge and rear flap-fold.

998 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Map endpapers. B&w maps. "World War II eventually involved every major power in the world, and before it was over some fifty million people lost their lives. (This) is a complete political and military history of World War II. Written with the pace and sweep of a fine novel, it makes the period, its major leaders, and the events not only comprehensible but also alive and real. Robert Leckie begins his book with the punitive treaty of Versailles and the fumbling efforts of the Western democracies to cope with the rise of Mussolini and Hitler. He draws vivid profiles of the political leaders, generals, and admirals who created and fought the war; describes the battles; analyzes the military strategy; considers the economic and political factors; and tells of the daily lives of those who were engaged on the far-flung fronts and those who endured at home. Churchill, Stalin, Roosevelt, MacArthur, Tojo, Eisenhower, Montgomery, Rommel and many other fascinating individuals become live protagonists on the stage sets of such dramatic sites as Stalingrad, Tobruk, Guadalcanal, Dunkirk, Leningrad, Monte Cassino, Midway, Omaha Beach, and Iwo Jima. Readers of all ages will find Leckie's powerful, action-packed narrative both compelling and comprehensive, and they will gain fascinating insights into one of the greatest and most awful events in human history." 398 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w illustrations. "In May 1595, a hundred Englishmen - 'gentlemen, soldiers, rowers, boat-keepers, boys, and of all sorts' - rowed up a river in South America in search of the lost golden city of El Dorado. They were led by Sir Walter Ralegh, forty years old, ready to hazard his fading reputation on this doomed gamble. Four hundred years later Charles Nicholl follows their trail into the strange terrain of this enduring international obsession. The journey begins with Ralegh's curious 'charte' in the British Museum and leads through the labyrinthine delta of the Orinoco River and up into the rugged Guiana highlands of southern Venezuela, the setting of Conan Doyle's 'The Lost World'. A night with a Warao tobacco shaman, an encounter with the jungle-hermit Laime, bush pilot Jimmy Angel's stories of earlier days, life in the shantytowns of the region's gold diggers - these color and deepen the book's intense recollection of that original Elizabethan expedition. In this vivid reconstruction, Nicholls blends historical scholarship with idiosyncratic reportage in a unique and fascinating mix." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has some light wrinkling at top of spine and top edge, slight fading to some of the spine and front hinge colour.
