3 Beetles, Chris. With contributions from Rodney Dale and David Wootton. LOUIS WAIN'S CATS.
Cambridge Worth Press 2011 1849310262 / 9781849310260 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+ Louis Wain.
256 pp, square small 10to (10 1/4" H x 10 1/4" D). Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w reproductions of Wain's art. "During their heyday, in the time before the First World War, Louis Wain's cats, dressed as humans, portrayed (the) stylish Edwardian world having fun; at restaurants and tea parties, going to the Races and the Seaside, celebrating Christmas and Birthdays, and disporting themselves with exuberant games of tennis, bowls, cricket and football. This is a titillating world of cats at play, uninhibited and slightly dangerous, with most group activities likely to turn into mishap, mayhem and catastrophe. This is Wain's world, funny, edgy and animated; a whole cat world. The first comprehensive exhibition of Wain's work was held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in 1972 and, since then, Louis Wain has steadily become more fashionable and collected worldwide. This new biography will show many images for the first time ever, amongst 300 plates of richness and variety, all of which are reproduced faithfully from the original artwork." Dust jacket has tiny wrinkles at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, a few slight wrinkles on front flap

After describing the activities of the submarine service during and after World War I, (the author) details the careers of the Canadians who served with distinction in British submarines in all theatres of World War II. She goes on to examine the modern era, from the rebirth of the service in the 1960s to the present, and provides little-known information about the controversial Conservative initiative for nuclear-powered submarines in 1987. DREAMCATCHERS: MYTHS AND HISTORY. (DREAM CATCHERS), Gottlieb, Julie V., Researcher
7 Gottlieb, Julie V., Researcher DREAMCATCHERS: MYTHS AND HISTORY. (DREAM CATCHERS)
Etobicoke Prospero 1999 1552678458 / 9781552678459 Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
128 pp, 10 1/4" H. Colour and b&w photographs, drawings. "In Ojibway tradition, mothers and grandmothers netted tiny circular cobweb-like charms from willow and sinew. These delicate charms were not meant to last but were intended to protect newborn children from 'everything evil, just as a spider's web catches and holds everything that comes in contact with it'. The beauty of dreamcatchers is reflected in their symmetry and natural accents. For generations, they have been crafted by making a hoop out of fresh wood, and then weaving a web inside the circle of deer sinew or colored thread. The unbroken strand of web/sinew is symbolic of eternity. Good dreams are also helped into the sleeper's dream world by feathers and colored beads that are attached at the bottom of the web. Careful attention is paid to leaving a hole in the middle of the web; if this is neglected, healthy dreams cannot find their way through to the dreamer." Contents: The Ojibway People; The Legend of the Dreamcatcher; Dreamcatchers and Children; The Dream Quest; Contemporary Issues - The Spiritual Legacy of Dreamcatchers; How to Make a Dreamcatcher; Notes and Bibliography; Index. Tiny dint on top edge of rear board. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling, one very small edge tear archivally taped, a few tiny dints on hinges.

THE ART OF CHOOSING., Iyengar, Sheena.
8 Iyengar, Sheena. THE ART OF CHOOSING.
New York Twelve 2010 0446504106 / 9780446504102 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
329 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). "Life is full of choices. How do we make them? Choice is a powerful tool to define ourselves and mold our lives - but what do we know about the wants, motivations, biases, and influences that aid or hinder our endeavors? Columbia University professor Sheena Iyengar, a leading expert on choice, sets herself the Herculean task of helping us become better choosers. She asks fascinating questions: Is the desire for choice innate or created by culture? Why do we sometimes choose against our best interests? How much control do we really have over what we choose? Ultimately, she offers unexpected and profound answers, drawn from her award-winning discipline-spanning research. Here you'll learn about the complex relationship between choice and freedom, and why one doesn't always go with the other. You'll see that too much choice can overwhelm us, leading to unpleasant experiences, from 'TiVo guilt' over unwatched TV programs to confusion over health insurance plans. Perhaps most important, you'll discover how our choices - both mundane and momentous - are shaped by many different forces, visible and invisible. This remarkable book illuminates the joys and challenges of choosing, showing us how we build our lives, one choice at a time." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has soft wrinkling at top edge, minor rubbing.

190 pp, oblong 8vo (9" H x 11 3/4" D), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0921254482 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "There has never been another theatre-building boom like the one occasioned by the explosive success of t he movies in the 1910s and 1920s. In Montreal alone, dozens of new theatres were built, not plain shoeboxes like modern cinemas, but huge and ornate halls with great domes glowing on distant ceilings and dizzying decorative schemes on the w a l l s . T hey were dream palaces, where ordinary people (for the mere price of a ticket) could sit amidst splendour and watch great dramas and romances unreel on the silver screen. This is the story of Montreal's movie palaces, as great and or na te a s an y o n the continent, of the businessmen and architects and craftsmen who built them, the masses who flocked to them, of the glory days they knew in their glamorous reign and the hard times they faced with the rise of TV. Dane Lanken spe nt twe nt y y ea rs st udying Montreal's movie palaces, interviewing the people who were there, searching for rare and previously unpublished archival photographs, and commissioning new views - while the theatres still stood - from leading arch itec tur al p hot ogra phe rs B ria n Merrett and Julie Greto. The result is a comprehensive and richly illustrated social, artistic, architectural and corporate history of an exuberant and little known era in Montreal's history." Del Rey, New York, (1990, 1991, 1992, 1994), Ist editions.
311 pp, 324 pp, 339 pp, 337 pp, - mass market paperbacks - 4 volumes. "Magic had ravaged Caithe since ancient times, striking unpredictably and creating men and women with powers they could neither understand nor control. Only the ritual slaughter of such mad wizards held the land safe from fire and destruction. Yet, even in Caithe, some magic was tolerated by the Church and the people, though grudgingly. Long before, the King had been given such powers in a secret, forbidden ritual by a renegade wizard. And so far, his use of them had been beneficial to the kingdom. But how long could he continue, before the powers he had gained turned upon him, to strike him with the horrors of madness? Athaya Trelane was not thinking of that, however, as she sat in the dingy tavern. Her thoughts were of herself. For already the first signs of the dread powers were manifesting in her! They were a gift that could not be denied - nor could the awful price!" Interiors - pages browning very lightly, otherwise clean and tight with no previous ownership marks, Exteriors - very light edge wear, faint creases on spines of books 1, 2 & 4. VG

Birch Lane / Carol Publishing, Secaucus, N.J., 1997.
262 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1559723912 B&w photographs. "Since her professional singing debut at the London Hippodrome in 1947 - at the age of twelve - Julie Andrews has been a star. In the half century since th ose last days of British vaudeville, through her smash Broadway comeback in 'Victor/Victoria', she has triumphed on stage, in the movies, and on television. At thirteen, Julie gave a command performance for the Queen of England, at nineteen she b e c ame a Broadway star in 'The Boy Friend', and she became a theatrical legend before she was twenty-one, as Elize Doolittle in 'My Fair Lady'. By the time she was thirty-one, Julie was the best-paid and most beloved actress in the world, with a n Ac ad emy Award for her first movie, 'Mary Poppins', and an international box-office championship with her third movie, 'The Sound of Music'. Her remarkable body of work up to this point stamped her with an indelible image she came to resent: who le som e, innocent, the nanny next door. Worse, at the peak of her enormous success, Andrews was unhappy enough to submit to daily psychotherapy. Her first marriage, to childhood sweetheart Tony Walton, broke down. After two flop movie musicals, 'St ar!' an d 'Darling Lili', the press and the public seemed to turn on her. Julie became box-office poison in Hollywood but even in her semiexile starred in critically successful, Emmy-winning television variety series, wrote two children's book s, a nd pe rfor med live....Here at last is the whole sixty-two-year life story of Julie Andrews - her meteoric rise, her devastating fall, and her incredible comeback, from the little English girl with the freak four-octave, crystalline voice to th e sur prisin g leg end who has outlasted her critics. Rober Windeler's affectionate and insightful biography reveals the full-blooded woman behind the high and low notes."
