DIEPPE 1942: THE JUBILEE DISASTER., Atkin, Ronald.
2 Atkin, Ronald. DIEPPE 1942: THE JUBILEE DISASTER.
Macmillan, London, 1980, first edition.
306 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0333191870 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "At dawn on 19 August 1942, five thousand Allied soldiers landed at the French port of Dieppe in the first major test of the defence of the G erman-held coastline of Europe since Dunkirk. The codename given to the operation was 'Jubilee' and its aim was to capture Dieppe and the headlands which dominate the town, hold them for a few hours and provide the Allied war planners with t h e v i t a l information they needed about enemy preparedness for the Second Front demanded by the Russians to relieve their sorely-pressed armies in the East. In nine hours of carnage and horror 'Jubilee' became a disaster. A combination of ove r- ri g id p la nn ing, inadequate supporting firepower and - in the final hours before the raid - sheer bad luck, inflicted on the Allies one of their worst defeats in a war which was already going badly. British Commandos carried out the flank a tta cks a gai nst co ast al gun batteries which dominated the seaward approaches to Dieppe and one of these raids, led by Lord Lovat, was spectacularly successful. But the assault on the port itself and the beaches on either side of Dieppe, the t ask of t he Cana dian 2nd Div ision, was a disastrous and bloody failure....Ronald Atkin has pieced together the full story of that day at Dieppe from all sides - British, Canadian, German and French - and from sources which include official docu ment s and re ports and most graph ic of all, the reminiscences of the men of both sides who planned and fought in Operation 'Jubilee'. The result is a masterly account of one of the most extraordinary - and tragic - episodes of the Second World War." Mino r fi nger m ark o n fro nt fre e end paper, tiny fain stain on fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has been price clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very light rubbing. Very Good+/V ery Go od

4 Bowyer, Chaz. Foreword by Group Captain T.P. Gleave. Dust jacket art by Rex Flood. HURRICANE AT WAR.
Ian Allan, Shepperton, 1974, first edition.
160 pp, 11 1/4" H, hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0711005648 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "The Hawker Hurricane has a permanent niche in the annals of military aviation history as the world's first operational eight-gun monoplane fighter and the RAF's first front-line fighter to achieve more than 300mph in level flight. But it has received little credit for its subsequent lion's share of the defence of the United Kingdom during the 1940 Battle of Britain, and its later serv ice in a score of fighting roles across every theatre of operations during the 1939-45 war. In this book the author sets out to redress this omission in due recognition of the Hurricane's magnificent record. With a collation of authentic, firs t - h a nd impressions and experiences by the men who flew and serviced the Hurricane, backed by a unique collection of specially selected photographs, many from private sources, he has recreated the genuine atmosphere of Hurricane operations. This a ma lg am of text and photographs traces the story of the Hurricane and its crews from the first prototype and pre-1939 service to France 1940; through the Battle of Britain; in the frozen wastes of North Russia; over beleagured Malta; across Sic ily an d G ree ce and as far afield as the Burmese jungle. There are pilots' accounts of low-level bombing sorties covering the disastrous Dieppe invasion, a personal story by the only fighter pilot of World War II to be awarded the Victoria Cross , an d pi ctor ial sections illustrating the armament, markings and, especially, the men who knew the Hurricane best - the crews." Multiple creases at bottom of pages 27 thru 40. very small crease/bump at top corner of pages 83 thru 102, light wrin kling at t op/bo ttom of spine, one tiny corner bump, small shallow bump and a tiny scuff at top edge of rear board. 256 pp, large 8vo, (9 3/8" H). B&w maps, photographs. "History's overriding view of the Dieppe raid in 1942 is that of a catastrophic disaster, with thousands of Canadian and British troops killed or captured. Often overlooked is No 4 Commando's successful supporting element of the raid to disable the heavy German guns that threatened the supporting ships at sea. No 4 Commando's training and preparation for their part in the raid was an excellent example of operational planning, its leadership was superb and its luck held. Quite apart from this first use of Commando's, this raid was also the first instance in which US troops fired shots at their European enemy in WWII. Will Fowler has been able to interview surviving members of No 4 Commando, and with extensive research of official records has pieced together a terrific blow by blow account of one of the most daring early Commando raids of the Second World War." "Captain James Ogilvie led B Company of the Queen's Own Royal Strathspeys, the 114th Highlanders, through the thronged streets of London. It was the diamond jubilee of the Queen Empress, and a day he would always remember with pride, as his company represented the British Army in India. But away on the North West Frontier trouble did not pause for the celebrations of the Raj. The Rajah of Drosh had rebelled, battalion losses were heavy, and Ogilvie was going to have to return to India with a larger than usual draft of raw recruits from the regimental depot at Invermore. Among these was a gentleman ranker, a fugitive from the Guards, who was to find his craving for active service brutally and plentifully fulfilled up the Chitral River and in the sniper fire of the passes between Peshawar and Drosh. Back in cantonments Ogilvie discovers his commanding officer has more on his mind than battalion losses, grievous though they have been. His second in command, the irascible, intemperate Major Lord Brora has gone absent without leave and has been reported consorting with the rebel Rajah - ."
