3 Beaumont, Roland. Foreword by Sir Peter Masefield. TESTING EARLY JETS: COMPRESSIBILITY AND THE SUPERSONIC ERA.
Airlife, Shrewsbury, 1990.
143 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1853101583 B&w photographs. "Roland Beaumont is one of the most experienced and highly-rated test pilots of the post-war era. In this book he outlines the significance of developments in early jets. Beaumont is well placed to make such assessments. As chief test pilot, he made the first flights on fourteen new-type aircaft. He was test pilot on many of the first and second generation jet fighters and bombers, both Briti s h a n d American, as well as the first British supersonic aircraft. The core of the book is made up of the author's flight test reports on such aircraft as the Gloster Meteor, the North American B45, the English Electric Canberra, the English El ec tr i c Li gh tning and Britain's first supersonic bomber, the TSR2, a project which was cancelled before the aircraft went into production. In conclusion, the author looks to a future in which he sees supersonic flight playing an ever-increasing ro le, e sp eci all y in the field of military aviation." SUPERMARINE ATTACKER, SWIFT AND SCIMITAR. POSTWAR MILITARY AIRCRAFT: 7., Birtles, Philip.
4 Birtles, Philip. SUPERMARINE ATTACKER, SWIFT AND SCIMITAR. POSTWAR MILITARY AIRCRAFT: 7.
Ian Allan, Shepperton, Surrey, 1992, first edition.
112 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0711020345 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, drawings/diagrams. "The name Supermarine is universally associated with the Spitfire, an aircraft which helped to defeat the Luft waffe during the Battle of Britain; the company's fundamental role in the development of Britain's military jet aircraft is less well known. Although now overshadowed by the success of the Hawker Hunter and of the BAC Lightning, the Supermari n e A t t acker, Swift and Scimitar were among the most influential of Britain's post-war military aircraft. The Attacker, first flown in 1946, was the first jet fighter to be standardised on for squadron service with the Fleet Air Arm. The Attac ke r w as f ol lowed by the Swift. The first of this type of jet interceptor flew in 1951 and was introduced to squadron service in February 1954; it thus gained the distinction of being the first swept-wing jet fighter to enter service with the R oya l Ai r F orc e, beating the Hawker Hunter by several months. The teething problems apparent with the Swift, however, ensured that it was the Hunter that was to go on to great success. Further success was to come to the Supermarine company with the S cim itar . A gai n destined for the Fleet Air Arm, the Scimitar holds the distinction of being the first swept-wing single-seat jet fighter in service with the FAA as well as being the first FAA aircraft to be equipped to carry atomic weapo ns. (Th e au thor) narr ates the often dramatic history of these influential, but now unfairly ignored, aircraft. Forty years after the event the book will enable the aviation historian to appreciate better the importance of Supermarine's role in the dev elopm ent of Brita in's military jet aircraft." Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds. Fine/Very Good

7 Bridgeman, William and Hazard, Jacqueline. THE LONELY SKY.
New York Henry Holt 1957 Fifth Printing Hard Cover Very Good Good
316 pp, 8 3/8" H. B&w photographs. "(T)he powerful and often thrilling story of a man who daily enters that lonely region beyond the speed of sound. A narrative of needle-nosed ships flying at blistering speeds, it is also the moving testament of a man risking his life to push back the frontiers of scientific knowledge. Like St.-Exupery, Bridgeman is capable of describing the vastness and beauty of the skies. But as America's foremost experimental test pilot, he is constantly aware of the multitude of technical information which he is called upon to use at any given moment. After the war, Bill Bridgeman left the Navy a restless man. Seeking action, he joined Douglas Aircraft as an engineering test pilot. Soon he was asked to take over the final stages of the Skyrocket testing program. The Skyrocket, a javelin-shaped experimental ship, was a challenge to Bridgeman. The story of his day-by-day life with the plane is the substance of (this book)." Toronto Dundurn 2010 1554886988 / 9781554886982 4th Edition, Revised. Soft Cover Near Fine
284 pp, large 8vo (9" H). B&w photographs. "The development of the Avro Arrow supersonic fighter was a remarkable Canadian achievement. Its mysterious cancellation in February 1959 prompted questions that have long gone unanswered. What role did the Central Intelligence Agency play in the scrapping of the project? Who in Canada's government was involved in that decision? What, if anything, did Canada get in return? Who ordered the blowtorching of all the prototypes? And did Arrow technology find its way into the American Stealth fighter/bomber program? When (this book) was first published in 1992, its answers to these questions sent shock waves across the country. Using never-before-released documents, (it) exploded the myth that design flaws, cost overruns, or obsolescence had triggered the demise of the Arrow. Now, in this fully revised fourth edition, complete with two new appendices, the bestselling book bring readers up-to-date on the CF- 105 Arrow, the most innovative, sophisticated aircraft the world had seen by the end of the 1950s." 18 Ferguson, John. With Stan & Shirley Fischler. THUNDER AND LIGHTNING.
Scarborough, Ontario Prentice-Hall 1989 0139206469 / 9780139206467 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
334 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "If the Montreal Canadiens had a weakness in the early 1960s it was size. Too often, small Canadiens were being battered against the boards and checked out of action. In 1963, that problem was solved, and a big part of the solutions was John Ferguson. Chosen out of the American Hockey Leauge by Frank Selke, Ferguson showed up in training camp with a reputation as a good hockey player, and one who hadn't lost a fight in the AHL. He lived up to his reputation during his first game in Boston. At the opening faceoff, he got into a fight with Ted Green, which he won. Not only that, Ferguson proceeded to score twice in that game, which ended in a 4-4 tie. John Ferguson played for the Canadiens for eight years, until he retired in 1971. During those years, he shared in five Stanley Cups, played five hundred games, scored 145 goals and 158 assists, and spent 1214 minutes in the penalty box. An extremely aggressive forward, he acted as the club's policeman and extended his dislike of opposing players off the ice. Ferguson retired from the Canadiens in 1971 to begin a new career as a businessman. He came back to hockey as Coach and General Manager of the New York Rangers in 1976, then as General Manager of the Winnipeg Jets, and finally as General Manager of Team Canada. Having retired once more from hockey, (he) will dedicate himself to his second great sporting love, as President of The Windsor Raceway." Minor wrinkling to top/bottom of text block, tiny dent to top edge of front board. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing, minor edge browning light crease down front flap.

179 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, Spitfire profiles. "Robert 'Buck' McNair came from Nova Scotia, the second of three sons born of a mix of Scottish and German parents. As a young man he became interested in flight, and was lucky enough to be able to fly floatplanes off the Canadian lakes. When war came, he went through flight training in Canada, sailed to England, and in the summer of 1941 found himself in the newly formed 411 Squadron RCAF. Eventually this unit began flying sweeps over Northern France and he saw his first combat actions during that autumn. An aggressive fighter pilot, he was chosen by his Canadian CO to accompany him to the besieged island of Malta in the spring of 1942, to coincide with the arrival on that island of the first Spitfires." McNair went on to win three DFCs and a DSO among other awards and although he was twice wounded, his score of victories reached 16, "with others probably destroyed and damaged. This is a remarkable story of courage and heroism by one of the Second World War's top-scoring fighter pilots who inspired his men and fellow pilots in actions above the skies of France and Malta, and who, despite being almost blind in one eye, continued to lead and spur his men onto greater actions."
