THE BARE FACTS: MY LIFE AS A STRIPPER., Ample, Annie.
4 Ample, Annie. THE BARE FACTS: MY LIFE AS A STRIPPER.
Toronto Key Porter 1988 1550130943 / 9781550130942 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
177 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w photographs. "She was notorious for taking off her clothes. Movies, magazines and TV shows, and fame as 'the girl with the million dollar chest' after her breasts were insured by Lloyds of London, helped create her very successful career as celebrity stripper, 'Annie Ample'. But behind all the hype was a real person. (Annie) looks back candidly on her turbulent childhood in a small town in California and her showbiz start as a 'go-go' dancer in a local club. 'Annie Ample' was the ingenuous character she devised to exploit the sex industry rather than be exploited by it. Whether she is recalling her narrow escapes from lascivious film producers, her famous plastic surgery, her wild nights with the jet set or the stampede of the paparazzi when she went sunbathing at Cannes, Annie's irrepressible sense of humor and earthy revelations make her story a compelling read, even when it borders on the tragic." THE ROYAL AIR FORCE: AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY., Armitage, Michael.
5 Armitage, Michael. THE ROYAL AIR FORCE: AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY.
London Brockhampton 1996 1860198511 / 9781860198519 Reprint Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
288 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps. "Created in 1918 from the former Royal Flying Corps, the RAF forged its own traditions as it developed the tactics and weap- onry of aerial warfare. It ended the First World War with a strength of 300,000 personnel and 23,000 aircraft, but there was the immediate threat of stringent post-war defence budgets and an Army and Navy that demanded that air power be under their control. The Chief of Air Staff, Trenchard, needed a successful example of the potential of air power in order to guarantee future funding, and it came in the RAF air-policing role in the Near East. The RAF was perhaps the most neglected armed force during the 'appeasement years', despite vocal opposition and foreign militarization. After desperate rearm-ament in both aircraft and ground forces, the RAF stemmed the tide of German expansion in the Battle of Britain. The author devotes one third of the book to the superb record of the RAF throughout the Second World War, acknowledging the problems in command, strategy and aircraft equipment that appeared in all theatres during the fight against the Axis forces. Chapters cover the lean years from 1940 to 1942 with the RAF over-committed on all fronts, through the gradual build-up with improved aircraft and on to the heavy bombing campaign and the final, comprehensive air assault on Germany. The years 1944-1945 mark the high point of RAF history, but the factual framework continues with details of the appearance of jet aircraft, the deployments worldwide as the British Empire evolved into the Commonwealth and the RAF's changing tactical and strategic roles as Britain declined from 'superpower' status. This period also includes an appraisal of the V-bomber force, the slow decline in British research and development, the emergence of the RAF role in NATO and the balance of power during the Cold War. The history of the RAF is fully detailed up to the present as one receding threat causes significant change in the number and type of aircraft needed to face the perceived new problems posed by developing nations." 190 pp, 8vo (8 13/16" H). B&w photographs, drawings. "Jean Batten is one of the great names in aviation history. She was born in New Zealand in 1909, a few weeks after Louis Bleriot flew the English Channel, and qualified for a flying licence at the London Aero Club in 1930. (This book) tells the story of (her) early life and of all her famous flights. The vivid descriptions of these flights, made nearly 50 years ago, highlight the hardships and dangers faced by the early aviators. Quite alone she flew immense distances in record times and in the most basic of aeroplanes. Not only did her flights create time records, but they also blazed the trail for the modern airline routes. The book is based on her earlier work 'My Life' 1938, but thoroughly revised and lengthened by the author without losing its period feel. Now, to a new generation of readers, used to sophisticated jet travel, her achievements will seem incredible. (A) gripping story of skill and courage written by one of the last great pioneer aviatiors." 9 Beaumont, Roland. Foreword by Sir Peter Masefield. TESTING EARLY JETS: COMPRESSIBILITY AND THE SUPERSONIC ERA.
Airlife, Shrewsbury, 1990.
143 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1853101583 B&w photographs. "Roland Beaumont is one of the most experienced and highly-rated test pilots of the post-war era. In this book he outlines the significance of developments in early jets. Beaumont is well placed to make such assessments. As chief test pilot, he made the first flights on fourteen new-type aircaft. He was test pilot on many of the first and second generation jet fighters and bombers, both Briti s h a n d American, as well as the first British supersonic aircraft. The core of the book is made up of the author's flight test reports on such aircraft as the Gloster Meteor, the North American B45, the English Electric Canberra, the English El ec tr i c Li gh tning and Britain's first supersonic bomber, the TSR2, a project which was cancelled before the aircraft went into production. In conclusion, the author looks to a future in which he sees supersonic flight playing an ever-increasing ro le, e sp eci all y in the field of military aviation." SUPERMARINE ATTACKER, SWIFT AND SCIMITAR. POSTWAR MILITARY AIRCRAFT: 7., Birtles, Philip.
10 Birtles, Philip. SUPERMARINE ATTACKER, SWIFT AND SCIMITAR. POSTWAR MILITARY AIRCRAFT: 7.
Ian Allan, Shepperton, Surrey, 1992, first edition.
112 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0711020345 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, drawings/diagrams. "The name Supermarine is universally associated with the Spitfire, an aircraft which helped to defeat the Luft waffe during the Battle of Britain; the company's fundamental role in the development of Britain's military jet aircraft is less well known. Although now overshadowed by the success of the Hawker Hunter and of the BAC Lightning, the Supermari n e A t t acker, Swift and Scimitar were among the most influential of Britain's post-war military aircraft. The Attacker, first flown in 1946, was the first jet fighter to be standardised on for squadron service with the Fleet Air Arm. The Attac ke r w as f ol lowed by the Swift. The first of this type of jet interceptor flew in 1951 and was introduced to squadron service in February 1954; it thus gained the distinction of being the first swept-wing jet fighter to enter service with the R oya l Ai r F orc e, beating the Hawker Hunter by several months. The teething problems apparent with the Swift, however, ensured that it was the Hunter that was to go on to great success. Further success was to come to the Supermarine company with the S cim itar . A gai n destined for the Fleet Air Arm, the Scimitar holds the distinction of being the first swept-wing single-seat jet fighter in service with the FAA as well as being the first FAA aircraft to be equipped to carry atomic weapo ns. (Th e au thor) narr ates the often dramatic history of these influential, but now unfairly ignored, aircraft. Forty years after the event the book will enable the aviation historian to appreciate better the importance of Supermarine's role in the dev elopm ent of Brita in's military jet aircraft." 316 pp, 8 3/8" H. B&w photographs. "(T)he powerful and often thrilling story of a man who daily enters that lonely region beyond the speed of sound. A narrative of needle-nosed ships flying at blistering speeds, it is also the moving testament of a man risking his life to push back the frontiers of scientific knowledge. Like St.-Exupery, Bridgeman is capable of describing the vastness and beauty of the skies. But as America's foremost experimental test pilot, he is constantly aware of the multitude of technical information which he is called upon to use at any given moment. After the war, Bill Bridgeman left the Navy a restless man. Seeking action, he joined Douglas Aircraft as an engineering test pilot. Soon he was asked to take over the final stages of the Skyrocket testing program. The Skyrocket, a javelin-shaped experimental ship, was a challenge to Bridgeman. The story of his day-by-day life with the plane is the substance of (this book)." "The B-24 Liberator was built in greater numbers than any other US warplane, yet its combat crews live, even today, in th e shadow of the less plentiful, but better-known, B-17. Accounts of the 'Mighty Eighth' in Europe, and indeed many of the books and films that emerged from the greatest air campaign in history, often overlook the B-24, even though it was in a c t i o n for as long as the Flying Fortress, and participated in just as many perilous daylight bombing missions. Twenty-one bomb groups saw action with the Eighth from 9 October 1942 through to VE-Day, operating both from airfields in the 'bombe r tr ia ng le ' in East Anglia, and North Africa. Providing an overview of Eighth AF B-24 operations, this volume is the second of four within this series chronicling the role of the Liberator in World War 2." "....chronicles the story of a majestic four-engined bomber of the propeller era flying perilous co mbat missions against a sleek, nimble aeroplane of the jet age, the Soviet MiG-15. A 'very heavy' bomber and a sky giant during World War 2 (at that time the B29 was the world's most advanced combat aircraft), it had been reclassified as a ' m e d i u m ' bomber by the time North Korea attacked its sourthern neighbour in 1950. Many of its crew members had fought their war and settled down to raise families and begin careers - only to be recalled to fight another war on a distant As i an p en in su la . A n irreverent bunch, they painted their B-29s in elaborate colour schemes. Historians have long been intrigued by the unique war they fought, pitting their big and vulnerable bomber against a veritable fleet of MiG-15s. THE ARROW., Dow, James.
19 Dow, James. THE ARROW.
Toronto James Lorimer 1997 1550285548 / 9781550285543 Soft Cover Fine
166 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs. "Here is the fascinating story of the rise and fall of the Arrow, the legendary interceptor jet aircraft developed by A.V. Roe Canada in the fifties. The Arrow was an unprecedented success story for Canada's fledgling aviation industry. It was conceived by its builders as the culmination of an impressive string of world firsts. Faster than any previous aircraft, it represented the leading edge of technology and an achievement of the highest calibre. Then came the dramatic decision whose rationale was not made public at the time and which remains hard to fathom even today. The Diefenbaker government cancelled the Arrow, and everything was destroyed, including the planes themselves. Nothing was to remain. Working from official documents, archives, interviews and a wide range of unofficial sources, James Dow presents the authoritative story of A.V. Roe Canada and its projects. He describes how the Arrow was developed and why it was killed. Dow takes us behind the scenes to the real dynamics and rivalries which were a part of the Arrow from the beginning and which explain its fate. This edition of the definitive books on the subject has been updated with a new introduction."

THE ARROW., Dow, James.
20 Dow, James. THE ARROW.
Toronto James Lorimer 1979 0888622811 Hard Cover Very Good Good+
160 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "The Arrow (supersonic fighter) appeared on Avro's drawing boards in 1952 and was in the air by 1958. Test flights were a great success, and five aircraft had flown by 1959. Then came the dramatic decision whose rationale was not made public at the time, and which even now seems obscure. The Arrow was cancelled, and everything to do with it, including the planes that had already flown, was broken into scrap. Nothing was to remain. To tell the story of the Arrow, James Dow explores the impressive experience of Canada's aircraft industry, created from virtually nothing during the Second World War by C.D. Howe and recruits from the business world. Avro was put together when the government aircraft companies were sold off at the war's end. Avro's first postwar project was the Jetliner, conceived in 1945 for Air Canada (then TCA). It was very nearly the world's first passenger jet, and was first in the air in August 1949 only days behind Britain's Comet. Avro's military experience came with the CF-100 Canuck fighter, which flew first in 1951. There was even an experimental flying saucer, built for the U.S. armed forces. The Arrow was to be the culmination of this experience and this success." Dust jacket has light to moderate rubbing, several small tears with creases at top edge, light edge wear, one small edge chip, protectedin a mylar sleeve.
