Ernest H Shepard, 'Kipper' to his family and friends, is perhaps best known - and loved - for the children's illustrations he did for the work of A.A. Milne and for his incomparable drawings for Kenneth Grahame's 'The Wind in the Willows'. His output, however, was considerable and altogether he illustrated somewhere near to a hundred books. Over a period of fifty years he also had weekly drawings in Punch magazine and these too are represented here." 8 Miller, Muriel BLISS CARMAN: QUEST & REVOLT.
St. John's, Newfoundland Jesperson Press 1985 0920502628 / 9780920502624 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
304 pp., 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "In this colourful and lively biography, we are urged to a new appreciation of the romantic and mythical vision of one of Canada's most important poets. In his lifetime, Bliss Carman enjoyed wide popularity in Canada, the United States and Europe, and the author shows a sensitive and knowledgeable understanding in her approach to the poet's life and work - his early years at home in New Brunswick, education in England and Scotland and his search for attention and recognition in the United States. Miller provides a lucid account of the world as it is seen through the poet's eyes and a rare look at the writing and publishing community as both struggled for survival in Carman's time." Very light browning to edges of text block, light wear at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor rubbing.

THE VAGABOND FLEET: A CHRONICLE OF THE NORTH PACIFIC SEALING SCHOONER TRADE., Murray, Peter.
9 Murray, Peter. THE VAGABOND FLEET: A CHRONICLE OF THE NORTH PACIFIC SEALING SCHOONER TRADE.
Victoria, B.C. Sono Nis Press 1988 1550390007 / 9781550390001 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good Maurice Chadwick.
260 pp, 9 1/4" H. Map endpapers. Sepiatone photographs, colour ship portraits. "This gripping history of Canada's unknown seal hunt is a saga of greed and subterfuge, of bumbling diplomatic intrigue that almost led to war. At the same time it is the story of brave men who battled stormy seas in aging ships, many of which had seen better days. Countless lives were lost. Many of the victims were native Indians recruited with their canoes and spears from villages along the west coast of Vancouver Island. The effect of these tragedies on the Indian population and the economic impact of the fur seal hunt on their way of life is examined here for the first time. Threaded throughout the book are stories of the colourful characters who skippered and manned the sealing schooners. After years of acrimonious negotiations, a four-nation treaty was finally signed in 1911 which saved the fur seals from extinction. It was a landmark agreement in the conservation of marine life which set the pattern for a number of other international treaties over the years." Dust jacket has small wrinkle at top edge of rear flap, very light rubbing/soiling on rear panel.

DEAR NAN: LETTERS OF EMILY CARR, NAN CHENEY AND HUMPHREY TOMS., Walker, Doreen, editor. (Emily Carr.)
12 Walker, Doreen, editor. (Emily Carr.) DEAR NAN: LETTERS OF EMILY CARR, NAN CHENEY AND HUMPHREY TOMS.
Vancouver University of British Columbia Press 1990 0774803487 / 9780774803489 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
436 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w and colour illustrations. "This collection includes 150 letters Emily Carr wrote to her friends Nan Cheney and Humphrey Toms and 100 other letters relating mainly to Emily Carr. The letters date from 1930 to 1945, the most prolific period in Carr's career as both painter and writer. In them she writes in colourful detail about her everyday activities, and discusses her painting - 'the biggest thing in my life'. There are outbursts of exasperation and anger as well as many indications of her caring, her warmth, her wisdom and her wit, and of her impatience with critics and poseurs; and they give insights into her various relationships with, among others, Lawren Harris, Ira Dilworth, Jack Shadbolt, Garnett Sedgewick, Dorothy Livesay, A.Y. Jackson, and Arthur Lismer. The correspondence between Cheney and Toms reveals how Carr was regarded at the time and attests to their mutual interest in the Vancouver art scene. As an active member Cheney relates gossip about the local art community, providing a very personal and often exceedingly critical view of the Vancouver art milieu of the time." Dust jacket has very minor wrinkling at top/bottom of flap-folds.
