ISBN 0134516427 "Lavishly illustrated with more than 400 color illustrations, the Atlas looks at the history of Jerusalem with maps, drawings, and isometric reconstructions, all updated with the latest archaeological evidence. Jerusalem is perhaps the most interesting city on earth. Sacred to Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike, it dates back to at least the third millenium BCE. David made it his capital; Solomon glorified it with his Te mple; it fell to Babylonia in 586 BCE and was rebuilt by Ezra and Nehemiah; it was the city of the Maccabees and of the Herods, and the place where Jesus was tried and crucified. Titus razed its buildings and destroyed the Temple in 70 CE. A f t e r t he revolt of Bar Kochba, the Romans made Jerusalem a pagan shrine. Jerusalem fell to the Crusaders in 1099; in 1187, Muslims, led by Saladin, captured the city and held it almost continuously until the British took control after World Wa r I. Th e B ritish Mandate ended in 1948 when the State of Israel was born. In 1967, Israel reunited the city. Special features in the Atlas include: concise, easy-to-read text; four-color illustrations, maps, drawings, and photos throughout ; de fi nit i ve an d a uthoritative information; selected bibliography of further readings; thorough index; an up-to-date approach, based on the latest findings. For anyone interested in biblical archaeology; geography; Jewish studies, culture, an d his tor y; a nd th e h isto ry and culture of the Middle East, (this book) is certain to be an invaluable resource." University of Toronto Press, Toronto, 1992.
278 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), soft cover. Maps. ISBN 0802076807 "The reasons for the emergence and establishment of military orders on the various borders of Western Christendom and within the West are discussed, as are the military functions and roles which they assumed. The orders made a major contribution to the defence and expansion of Western Chistendom, and this required considerable funds and reserves of manpower. This book describes the ways in which these were obtained, and giv e s a n a c count of extensive governmental machinery developed to enable the orders to carry out their tasks effectively. Although their members combined a military with a monastic way of life, the military orders are shown to have differed from o th e r re l ig i o us foundations not only in their daily routine but also in their adminstrative structure and in their predominantly lay membership." "The success of the First Crusade, and its capture of Jerusalem in 1099, has been conventionally explained by its ideological and political motivation. This book looks at the nature of war at the end of the eleventh century and the military experience of all the contending parties in order to explain its extraordinary success. It is the first such examination, tak in g i nt o a cc ou n t all other factors but emphasising the military." Interior - previous owner's small stamp on inside of front cover. CRIMEAN BLUNDER: THE STORY OF WAR WITH RUSSIA A HUNDRED YEARS AGO., Gibbs, Peter.
11 Gibbs, Peter. CRIMEAN BLUNDER: THE STORY OF WAR WITH RUSSIA A HUNDRED YEARS AGO.
Holt, Rinehart and Winston, New York, 1960, first American edition.
297 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "The Crimean War was a little war, a seemingly unimportant war which England entered - as Trevelyan wrote - for no better reason than that she was bored with pe ace. When, in 1854, the London crowds saw their soldiers marching off to fight, they cheered with delight. The war against Russia, into which Britain and France had drifted in alliance with Turkey - and which had grown out of a petty quarre l b e t w e en some monks in Jerusalem - was to be a lighthearted and glorious adventure. True, the Crimean was a war to capture only one town. Nonetheless the suffering was appalling and 300,000 lives were lost. It was in the Crimean War that t he te le gr ap h was first used to apprise statemen at home of events at the front. It was then that Florence Nightingale, horrified by the unnecessary waste of life and by the inhumanity of the treatment of the troops, organized the nursing servi ce t hat wa s t o m ak e history. It was, in fact, Crimea that finally ended the myth that war had glamor. In (this book, the author) tells the full story of this strange conflict, how the errors and blunders and optimism on the part of Palmersto n a nd Que en V icto ria, Lo uis Napoleon and Tsar Nicholas developed into a nightmare. Here is the story of the fantastic, gallant and infamous Charge of the Light Brigade, but here also is the unforgettable drama of the ordinary soldier - Briti sh, Fre nch, Russi an an d Tur kish - who fought steadfastly on, though sacrificed again and again by the stupidity of his commanders." 176 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w illustrations. "Judaism, has flourished for millennia in a myriad of environments; each has contributed something to the Jewish tradition. Far from being a religion ossified in the world of the Bible; it has produced countless legends and stories, built up on Bible inspiration but reflecting the ideas of the cultures within which they emerged. (This book) explores the core of the Jewish faith by retelling the stories made up and told by Jews throughout the world. The author develops essential ideas of Judaism, including the creation of the universe, the history of man, the history of Israel and the future of Israel. He retells the familiar Biblical stories surrounding the great Biblical personalities such as Abraham, Moses and Elijah. He then goes on to show how their ideas and their characters were developed in the legends and folklore surrounding the Torah, and elaborated throughout the rabbinical tradition. With its great variety of stories told in clear and simple style, written for Jew and Gentile alike, (it) provides a fascinating insight into the wealth and vitality of Judaism." 344 pp, folio (13 1/4" H). Signed on half title page: "Moshe Safdie / March 1997". "Influenced by the diverse cultures of Canada, Israel and the USA, Moshe Safdie's architecture displays a richly evolving tectonic and spatial sensibility. During 30 years of practice, he has designed public institutions, housing and mixed-use complexes, and developed designs for both existing urban districts and entirely new citities. In this monograph more than 40 of his projects are illustrated with spectacular photography, original design sketches and text. These works include his seminal Habitat project for the Canadian Expo '67, the National Gallery of Canada, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and Vancouver's Library Square in Caada; the Yad Vashem Children's Holocaust Memorial, the Restoration of the Jewish Quarter, Mamilla Center and Hebrew Union College in the city of Jerusalem; the Skirball Museum and Cultural Center in Los Angeles; and the urban designs for Montreal, Senegal, Singapore and the new city of Modi'in in Israel. Together, they demonstrate the depth of Safdie's work, and an architectural vocabulary full of light and colour. In his essay 'The Language and Medium of Architecture' and in an interview with Wendy Kohn, Moshe Safdie discusses his architecture and influences. Each of the essays, by Michael Sorkin, Paul Goldberger, Witold Rybczynski and Peter G. Rowe, covers a different facet of Safdie's architectural oeuvre." Washington, D.C. Brassey's 2001 1574882929 / 9781574882926 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
128 pp, 11 1/4" H. "The crusades, of which there were several, conducted by many forcees from different nations, were ultimately unsuccessful, the last crusaders being forced out of the Holy Land in 1291. However, as this fascinating history shows, they did serve to advance many military concepts. Notable among these were the logistics involved in moving thousands of combined forces across frequently hostile regions; fortifications and siege warfare; and armour and weapons. There were heroes and villians, too - again on both sides - and examples of great generalship, military ineptitude, magnamity, and atrocity. The most notable leaders during these conflicts were Richard I, Lionheart, King of England, and the saracen commander, Saladin. While they never met, each had a justifiable respect for the other. This handsome volume encapsulates all the intriguing contrasts between the combatant forces, outlining the formation of the Christian Military Orders - such as the Knights Hospitallers - and the ferocious saracen armies. It describes the major weapons, such as siege machines, as well as personal arms and armour, and the important battles. Liberally illustrated with maps and diagrams, plus contemporary and other illustrations of the people, places and warfare, (this book) is a highly readable military history of a period and events that have an enduring fascination for military enthusiast and general reader alike." 174 pp, 10 3/4" H. B&w photographs, colour and b&w reproductions. "Throughout (this book) Daphne Odjig's story has been told by herself as related through R.M. Vanderburgh and M.E. Southcott. As a product of an oral tradition that was still flourishing during her childhood in the village of Wikwemikong on Manitoulin Island in Georgian Bay, Daphne became a superb storyteller, in the tradition of her elders. It is this inheritance that she has built on as she told her stories to her two collaborators. Odjig's skills as a storyteller are reflected in the impressionistic introductions to many of the chapters. Her lively expresion of events and activities in her life come vividly alive for Vanderburgh who has maintained as much as possible the authenticity of Odjig's narratives and tried to pass these impressions along to the reader. Odjig's skill in visual communication is evident in the paintings reproduced here. Southcott has tried to pass on to the reader the thoughts and emotions the artist experienced in the creation of these paintings."
