THE MONGOLS: A HISTORY., Curtin, Jeremiah. Foreword by Theodore Roosevelt.
1 Curtin, Jeremiah. Foreword by Theodore Roosevelt. THE MONGOLS: A HISTORY.
Combined Books, (Conshohocken, PA, 1996), reprint.
426 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" h), soft cover. Originally published in 1908. "Curtin's narrative provides exhaustive detail on the clans, feuds, battles, and conquests of the Mongol era. Every aspect of Mongol intrigue, logistics, planning and tactics is covered, along with many incidents illustrating their cunning, cruelty and ingenuity. Full coverage is given of the Mogols in China, India and the Middle East. Of particular interest is the detailed account of the Mongols' relationship wit h the Crusaders, and how their appearance upset the balance of power between Christendom and Islam. Perhaps the most dramatic aspect of the Mongols' career in the Middle East was their lengthy rivalry with the Assassins' cult. A detailed and colorful account of the Assassins' evolution and doctrine is given, and the description of a long and murderous conflict that has a curiosly modern ring to it. A comprehensive and highly descriptive index serves as a valuable guide to the numerous individuals, places and events discussed." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - corner crease on rear cover - migrates into last few pages. VG

BE NOT FAR FROM ME: THE OLDEST LOVE STORY. LEGENDS FROM THE BIBLE., Kimmel, Eric A.
3 Kimmel, Eric A. BE NOT FAR FROM ME: THE OLDEST LOVE STORY. LEGENDS FROM THE BIBLE.
New York Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers 1998 0689810881 / 9780689810886 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine David Diaz
256 pp, 11" H. Colour illustrations. "This collection of stories reveals the tumultuous relationship between people and God that started four thousand years ago and continues to this day. It begins with Abraham - who was the first to believe in one God and therefore the first to receive His blessing - and spans over 1,500 years as it explores the lives of his descendants. We meet warriors who dole out God's justice, kings anointed by God, and prophets who preach God's word. We see awesome miracles made by God's hand and incredible accomplishments made in God's name. Master storyteller Eric Kimmel draws upon the Bible and the Midrash to create vivid portrayals of favorite heroes like David, Samson, Deborah, and Elijah and of lesser-known ones like Miriam, Hosea, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel. Their human frailties make the tales enduring and timeless, and Kimmel's modern language makes them accessible and riveting. More than just a collection of Bible stories, (this) is a though-provoking epic that brings past, present, and future together in the ongoing love story between God and humanity." Very tiny bump at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine.

4 McDowall, Duncan. QUICK TO THE FRONTIER: CANADA'S ROYAL BANK.
Toronto McClelland and Stewart 1993 0771055048 / 9780771055041 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
478 pp, 10" H. Pictorial endpapers, b&w photographs, reproductions. "(T)he story of the Royal Bank, told not only in terms of executive personalities and corporate strategies, but also through an exploration of its corporate culture - of the lives of the people of the Royal - and of the part this corporate culture played in the opening of the country and the expansion of international trade. Throughout are vignettes that focus on some diverting details in the life of the Royal Bank. How many, for instance, know that Henry Mullins, the manager of the Mariposa branch of the Exchange Bank in Stephen Leacock's 'Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town', was based on a real-life Royal Banker, George Rapley, of the Orillia, Ontario branch? Or that, in an effort to foil robbers, tellers were often expected to sleep on the bank premises (sometimes in front of the vault) with loaded revolvers under their pillows? Eminently readable as well as informative (this book) fills an important gap in Canadian business history." Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly top edge small scratch on both panels, tiny dent on front panel.

RAIDERS OF THE MOHAWK: THE STORY OF BUTLER'S RANGERS. GREAT STORIES OF CANADA SERIES NO. 3., Miller, Orlo.
5 Miller, Orlo. RAIDERS OF THE MOHAWK: THE STORY OF BUTLER'S RANGERS. GREAT STORIES OF CANADA SERIES NO. 3.
Toronto Macmillan 1909 Reprint Hard Cover Good+ Good- John MacLellan.
182 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). Map endpapers. Black, white and green illustrations. "When the thirteen colonies of America went to war for their independence, there were many colonists who declared for their King, George III. This is the story of one such group - the fierce and reviled Butler's Rangers, a Loyalist regiment which, from a base at Niagara, fought a series of courageous and bitter campaigns during the American Revolution, 1776 to 1783, for the King and for their homes in the State of New York. It is also the story of young Daniel Springer, of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., whose father was killed by the rebels early in the war. Daniel joined the Rangers and through his experiences we follow some of the most savage battles of the Revolution and meet the Loyalists who fought with courage and gallantry for their beliefs - staunch old Colonel John Butler, commander of the regiment; his dashing, ill-fated son, Captain Walter; Peter Ten Broeck, who declared for the King while his brother declared for the rebels; Joseph Brant, war chief of the Mohawks; 'Indian' Allen, hard-bitten frontiersman; and the Rangers' Indian allies, the Senecas, Mohawks, and Cayugas who were members of the Six Nations. Here is history that was also high adventure, sought and sustained by men of strong ideals." A fictionalized version written for the younger reader. A few center page leaves with corner creases and a few with light stains in margins, large corner crease on title page, large gift inscription on dedication page, tiny corner bumps to boards, light soiling to fore-edge of text block, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, book is slightly cocked, very light edge wear. "The wars described in 'The Deluge' are the most complicated and significant in the whole career of the (Polish) Commonwealth, for the political motives which came into play during these wars had their origin in early and leading historical causes. The policy of the Teutonic Knights gave the first o f i t s f i nal results in the war of 1655, between Sweden and Poland, since it made the elector independent in Prussia, where soon after, his son was crowned king. The war with Great Russia in 1654, though its formal cause came, partly at leas t, f r om t he st ru ggle of 1612, in which the Poles had endeavored to subjugate Moscow, was really roused by the conflict of Southern Russia with Poland to win religious and material equality...." THE QUARTERDECK LADDER., Styles, Showell. Wraparound dust jacket art by Ionicus.
8 Styles, Showell. Wraparound dust jacket art by Ionicus. THE QUARTERDECK LADDER.
William Kimber, London, 1982, first edition.
173 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0718300297 "Jeremiah Coghlan's meteoric rise from ship's boy to Post Captain in the Royal Navy of Nelson's time is matter of historical fact. So is the succession of sea-fights by which he a chieved his ambition. But Navy records naturally have nothing to say about the private life of this obscure and forgotten hero, and here the author has interwoven fiction with fact to produce a stirring tale in which troubled romance ashore c o n t r a s ts with desperate action afloat. Commander Showell Styles served in Mediterranean waters during most of World War 2 and sailing small craft is one of his hobbies - circumstances which enable him to reconstruct with authenticity the s e a- fi gh ts a nd s hip-handling of the Napoleonic Wars. In his books he invariably writes about men who actually lived and naval engagements that actually took place." Tiny soiling mark on title page, faint cigarette odor.
