"(T)he first novel to have a truly working-class girl as its heroine, and it let middle-class readers into her home and into her heart. It was a Manchester melodrama, a tale of the desperate 'Hungry Forties', with breath-stopping scenes of drama and excitement - a fire, a murder, a trial. It was a love story, and a tight, entangled portrayal of conflicting loyalties. But it was also a thoroughly sympathetic depiction of the lives of mill-workers, and of the gulf between them and their masters, uncovering an abyss of incomprehension and lack of communication that would lead inevitably to tragedy." Slipcase has very tiny scuff on one side panel, very small bump at top edge of rear panel.

THE LOVE SONGS AND HEROINES OF ROBERT BURNS., Hill, John C., Rev. (Robert Burns.)
7 Hill, John C., Rev. (Robert Burns.) THE LOVE SONGS AND HEROINES OF ROBERT BURNS.
J.M. Dent, London, 1961, first edition.
155 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "Many who sing the love songs of Robert Burns have no idea of the heroines in whose honour they were composed. Mr. Hill's book provides the necessary information, for it comprises a collection of the poet's love lyrics set in a series of pen pictures of the 'garden of girls' to whom they are addressed. The songs are thus given their proper background, and the story connected with each heroine is fully and admirably told. This identification adds greatly to the interest of the songs....The poems are annotated where Scottish expressions need definition." TRENTON: 50 YEARS OF AIR FORCE., Johnson, E.A. "Rick", Major, editor. Foreword by Colonel R.D. Russell.
8 Johnson, E.A. "Rick", Major, editor. Foreword by Colonel R.D. Russell. TRENTON: 50 YEARS OF AIR FORCE.
CFB Trenton 50th Anniversary Committee, Trenton, Ontario, 1981.
160 pp, oblong 8vo (8 5/8" H x 10 1/2" D), hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs. "Ever since it was officially opened in 1931 the base of Trenton, Ontario has been the most important military airfield in Canada. It began as a flying training base and in the early war years was responsible for training flight instructors who in turn helped to train the thousands of pilots in the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. After the war the base remained the home of Central Flying School and pilot training continued to be the primary activity. Post war expansion of commercial air traffic to and from Toronto gradually began to interfere with the freedom of movement of the trainers and in 1961CFS was moved to the open skies of the prairies and Trenton became the home of Air Transport Command. Throughout its 50 year history many thousands of airmen and airwomen have lived and worked here. Countless thousands more have passed through, either on course or as air transport passengers. It is hoped that this book will be of interest to everyone who has been here, by providing information about what happened here before or since their particular time at Trenton and by offering a nostalgic look at some of the people, planes and places of their era." Minor edge wear, one tiny edge dint. Dust jacket has one 1" closed tear archivally taped, a knife cut across rear panel, light browning, small dint on rear flap -fold, a few tiny closed tears, minor edge wrinkling. Very Good+/Good+

THE LAFAYETTE ESCADRILLE., Mason, Herbert Molloy, Jr.
9 Mason, Herbert Molloy, Jr. THE LAFAYETTE ESCADRILLE.
Smithmark, New York, 1995.
340 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0831757124 B&w photographs, maps. "Presents the full, authoritative story of that 'brave band of brothers' who were the first Americans to fight in World War I. Patriots, adventurers, even soldiers of fortune, they came from all walks of life, burning with a kind of idealism which has now all but disappeared. They began their fight against the Hun in the trenches - as members of the Foreign Legion they kept their U.S. cit i z e n s h ip - but turned naturally and enthusiastically to the new war that was being waged high in the sky. They flew French planes and at first were scattered among various French squadrons. Then a special 'escadrille' was formed for the Amer ic an s, a nd s oon its reputation spread far beyond the front. While the United States was sending obsolete 'Jenny' training planes against Pancho Villa in Mexico, the Lafayette Escadrille - and Americans like Norman Prince, Raoul Lufbery, Victo r C hap man , B ill Th aw, Kiffin Rockwell and Jim McConnell - was meeting in deadly dogfights the best pilots Germany had to offer. (This book) is based on years of research in Europe and in America, including interviews with survivors of the Esc adri lle. It is ther efor e not only the definitive story of the Escadrille but also a unique portrayal of the first war in the air. It reveals the full spectrum of their existence - in the air as well as on the ground. It tells of pet lion cub s (na med W hiske y an d Sod a) as well as ambitious air raids; of dogfights as well as highjinks in Paris. More than any other book, this dramatic narrative tells honestly and in depth what it was like to be an American pursuit pilot in the Great War." Mino r wrin kling at to p/bott om of front hinge. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of front hinge and at top of rear flap-fold. Very Good+/Very Good+

THUNDERSHINE: TALES OF METAKIDS., Skinner, David. Illustrated by Kevin Skinner.
12 Skinner, David. Illustrated by Kevin Skinner. THUNDERSHINE: TALES OF METAKIDS.
Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, (New York, 1999), Ist edition.
115 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illus. "When Jenny draws an untrue map, the world changes to conform. Mae, for some reason, walks wherever she goes, although everyone else 'bops', or teleports, at will. Dexter can spraypaint his thoughts onto walls - which attracts the attention of Meredith, who talks to the planet Pluto. And Nina, who can give any power she wants to her brother, to his friends, and to herself, refuses to save a neighborhood boy from death. These are metakids: kids who are kids...and more besides...Each of these four stories gives its own marvelous and often surprising answer to the question: What is it like, after all, to have a superpower?" 13 Snow, Hank. With Jack Ownbey and Bob Burris. THE HANK SNOW STORY.
Urbana University of Illinois Press / Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame 1994 0252020898 / 9780252020896 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
555 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "(Traces Hank Snow's) life from humble beginnings, through his emergence as an entertainer in Canada, the United States, and throughout the world, to his stature as one of the most influential figures in country music today. But more than a rags-to-riches memoir, this book presents Hank's life and career in his own voice, with remarkable candor and incredible detail. It provides the first extensive look at the early development of country music in Canada, reveals the inner workings of the music industry (including Hank's vital and unsung role in launching Elvis Presley's career), frankly discusses the nonglamorous side of stardom, and offers the reflections of an outspoken artist who has been professionally involved with country music for nearly sixty years. Through Ernest Tubb's intercession, he made his debut on Nashville's Grand Ole Opry. Disheartened by the lack of audience response, Hank nearly abandoned his dream. Then he recorded a song he had written, 'I'm Movin' On'. It climbed to the top of the charts, staying at number one for twenty-nine weeks. More hits followed, and his life and career changed forever. Over the years, Hank has entertained servicepeople on military bases in Korea, Europe, and Vietnam. Remembering his own (difficult) childhood, he established the Hank Snow Foundation for the Prevention of Child Abuse. (He was) elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame and to the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame." Minor twist to spine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling otherwise clean and bright.
