2 Bergstein, Rachelle. WOMEN FROM THE ANKLE DOWN: THE STORY OF SHOES AND HOW THEY DEFINE US.
New York Harper 2012 0061969613 / 9780061969614 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Nami Matsuo Scott.
284 pp, 9 1/4" H. Small b&w illustrations. "What is it about a pair of shoes that so enchants women of all ages, demographics, political affiliations, and style tribes? Part social history, part fashion record, part pop-culture celebration, (this book) seeks to answer that question as it unfolds the story of shoes in the twentieth century. The tale begins in the rural village of Bonito, Italy, with a visionary young shoe-maker named Salvatore Ferragamo and ends in New York City with a fictional socialite and trend-setter named Carrie Bradshaw. Along the way it stops in Hollywood, where Judy Garland first slipped on her ruby slippers; New Jersey, where Nancy Sinatra heard something special in a song about boots; and the streets of Manhattan, where a transit-worker strike propelled women to step into cutting-edge athletic shoes. Beginnng with the well-heeled suffragettes in the 1910s, women have fought for greater freedom and mobility, a struggle that exploded in the 1960s with the women's liberation move-ment and culminated in the new millenium with our devotion to personal choice. Featuring interviews with designers, historians, and cultural experts, and a cast of real-life characters, from Marilyn Monroe to Jane Fonda, from Gwen Stefani to Manolo Blahnik, (it) is a lively, compelling look at the evolution of modern woman and the fashion that reflects - and has shaped - their lives." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine - also tiny tear at top of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top of hinges, minor rubbing.

Prentice-Hall, Englewood Cliffs, N.J., 1965.
255 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers, b&w plates, maps, drawings. "(The author provides atmosphere and reality to this history) by focusing attention upon the people and the everyday happenings at the Fortress of Louisbourg and gives a colorful re-creation of land and sea battles. Downey describes this vital bastion as 'The strongest fortress in America, a walled city without a peer in the New World'. Louisbourg was guardian of the approaches to the S t . L awrence River, gateway to the heart of French Canada, and the key to a continent. In North America, the grasp of France was beginning to loosen. Its territories were shrinking, due to England's relentless drive. But total possession was im po ss i bl e so long as the great fortress Louisbourg stood fast. Then in 1744, war was declared between France and England and General William Pepperrell and American Colonial troops with the English navy laid siege to Louisbourg which fell in 174 5. En gl and 's possession lasted only three years, as Louisbourg was restored to the French by the Treaty of Aix la-Chapelle. The Seven Years War brough still another siege (1758) by the British who defeated the French. When the struggle be t ween th e tw o g reat powers ended, the fort was demolished and its people dispersed." At its peak, the USAAF boasted 2,411,294 men and women in uniform with 230,000 aircraft flown by 193,440 pilots. And statistically, there was no more dangerous place to be in World War II than in a bomber over Germany. Viking Studio, New York, 1995, first edition.
224 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0670860441 "The most important historical event of the 20th century was a war that seemed to be fought in black-and-white. Our collective memory of the years 1941-1945 exists in monochrome, because that was the way most of us saw it - and continue to see it - in the films and still pictures of the day. Color film for motion pictures and still cameras was readily available then, but was not in wide use because of its fragility and t h e difficulties of developing it. But there were enough hardy photographic pioneers around in 1941 to take the new color film to war, and their pictures, surviving beautifully to this day, show us a very different world than the one we see in o ld n ew sreels. At first glance these images are a bit startling; we are not used to seeing the people, places, and events of the early 1940s in living color. But in due time these pictures seem utterly right, and in fact bring World War II int o mor e r eco gnizable form, more comfortable for modern eyes. Here, then, is a colorful recollection of World War II in over 200 photographs taken, for the most part, by amateur lensmen - ordinary soldiers, sailors, and airmen who wanted to record a nd p rese rve their time in the largest conflict in world history." "The English Civil Wars represent the most vital watershed in British history, effectively extinguishing the vestiges of feudalism and originating the concepts of constitutional monarchy and standing army. This history concentrates upon the military aspects (of the three distinct wars of the period). In addition to a detailed and chronological account of the campaigning, and insights into the characters of the military and political leades, the book includes an important section on a subject frequently neglected: on how an army was formed, how its members were recruited (or impressed), how regiments were raised, trained and equipped, how an army was provisioned, marshalled in the field, how its infantry and cavalry were employed, how its artillery was managed, and ultimately how it fought, advance d o r r e treated. In all these matters, as in the chronological account of the war which follows, most extensive use has been made of contemporary drill-books, manuals, accounts by military theorists and practical soldiers, eye-witness accoounts a n d me m oi rs ." 20 Nichol, Eric, editor. (Francis Dickens.) DICKENS OF THE MOUNTED: THE ASTONISHING LONG-LOST LETTERS OF INSPECTOR F. DICKENS NWMP, 1874-1886.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1989 0771068077 / 9780771068072 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
294 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Map on front endpapers, reproductions of letters on rear endpapers. "Few people know that Charles Dickens had a son who served in the North-West Mounted Police in the days when the Canadian West was wild. Those historians who mention his twelve years in the force (1874-1886) dismiss him as a round peg in a square hole, a fat, stammering, slightly deaf, alcoholic Englishman with a tendency to fall off his horse in the course of tense confrontations with Indian warriors. These recently discovered letters home to England set the record straight, and reveal the true Dickens. Not only do these letters tell us much about the Dickens family, even to the point of parodying 'Pa's' purple prose, they also tell us a great deal about early Canada as Dickens saw it in Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, and Winnipeg, and in forts all across the prairies. Dickens met everyone worth meeting in the West - including Crowfoot, Gabriel Dumont, Sam Steele, Jerry Potts, and Louis Riel - and even encountered famous visitors such as Sitting Bull, the Governor General, and Col. Harry Flashman (whom he calls 'a humbug'). And while he may have blotted his copy-book surrendering Fort Pitt to Riel's rebels, we learn here that he deserves credit for inspiring the Mounties' Musical Ride and the phrase 'a Mountie always gets his man'. Editor Nichol's wonderful skills have brought this man so alive that when we part from Frank Dickens at the end of the book, we do so with the sense of having lost a friend." Small area of light browning on top of text block. Dust jacket has tiny dent on rear panel, very minor edge wrinkling.
