1 Bowyer, Chaz. FOR VALOUR: THE AIR VCs.
London Grub Street 1992 0948817577 / 9780948817571 Reprint Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
548 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. Of the 1,350 Victoria Crosses awarded since 1856, only 51 have been conferred on airmen. "Here, for the first time, are the complete and accurate biographies of each of those 51 men. Though primarily regarded as a British honour, of those 51 airmen, 16 were not British-born; coming from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Eire willingly to pledge their lives in Britain's cause during the two major world wars of this century. Resulting from several decades of private research on an international scale, and profusely illustrated, this book has undoubtedly become the standard reference work on the subject of air VCs. It also provides a lasting record of their lives and astonishing courage - a permanent tribute to every airman ever awarded a Victoria Cross." Very minor wrinkle at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light rubbing.

ARCHITECTURE IN ENGLAND., Daniels, Jeffery. Drawings by Leonora Ison.
4 Daniels, Jeffery. Drawings by Leonora Ison. ARCHITECTURE IN ENGLAND.
Weidenfeld & Nicolson (Educational), London, 1968.
128 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 298762102 B&w drawings, floor plans, elevations. "Illustrated with over 70 line drawings and plans, the text spans over 2,000 years of architecture in England. The account begins with a discussion of the villas, camps and roads of Roman Britain, and shows how this heritage slowly decayed, giving way to the Romanesque imported by the conquering Normans. The soaring Gothic of the middle ages yields in its turn to another E u r o p e a n influence, the Renaissance, which acquires its own English character. The Baroque, Pallandian and Neo-Classic movements are then analysed, and the survey is brought right up to date with the industrial and scientific revolutions of t he n in et ee nt h and twentieth centuries, and their effects on techniques and styles. Dominant architectural styles are fully defined and illustrated, and the many examples given will stimulate a study in depth by means of visits to churches, ho use s, cas tle s, mus eu ms and modern streets and office blocks. The special value of this book for the student of architecture is the care taken by the author to illustrate his text at every point, with examples drawn from every field of arch itec ture - eccl esia sti cal and secular, domestic and institutional." Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has one small closed tear, very light edge wear. Very Good+/Very Good

THE MILITARY CORRESPONDENCE OF FIELD MARSHAL SIR HENRY WILSON 1918-1922. PUBLICATIONS OF THE ARMY RECORDS SOCIETY VOL. I., Jeffery, Keith, editor. Field Marshal Sir Henry Wilson.
5 Jeffery, Keith, editor. Field Marshal Sir Henry Wilson. THE MILITARY CORRESPONDENCE OF FIELD MARSHAL SIR HENRY WILSON 1918-1922. PUBLICATIONS OF THE ARMY RECORDS SOCIETY VOL. I.
Bodley Head / Army Records Society, London, 1985, first edition.
438 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 037030683X Two b&w maps. "Among the papers of Field Marshal Sir Henry Wilson in the Imperial War Museum are some 300 letters dating from his time as professional head of the British Army. W ilson was Chief of the Imperial General Staff, February 1918 to February 1922, and the correspondence selected for this Army Records Society volume reflects all the principal military concerns of the period. During the last nine months of th e F i r s t World War the great German spring offensive, the Allied successes in the late summer and autumn, and final victory in November dominate the letters. Post-war problems of demobilisation and army re-building were followed by the difficu lt i es o f me et ing wide-range military commitments throughout the world. At home domestic revolution necessitated that the army prepare for operations in aid of the civil power. Abroad military action had to be co-ordinated with the French in ord er to en fo rce th e peace treaty with Germany and support Allied policy in Eastern Europe. Further demands were made on the army by calls to repress nationalist unrest in Ireland, Egypt, Indian and Mesopotamia (Iraq), together with communal vio len ce i n Pa les tine . A ll these topics are covered in the correspondence, which in particular demonstrates Wilson's growing disillusionment with the government's Irish policy. Wilson was himself an Irishman with strong Unionist sympathies whic h ma teria lly c ontr ibute d to his assassination by Irish nationalists just a few months after retiring from the War Office." WITH WOLFE TO QUEBEC: THE PATH TO GLORY., Warner, Oliver.
7 Warner, Oliver. WITH WOLFE TO QUEBEC: THE PATH TO GLORY.
Collins, London, 1972, first edition.
224 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0002119420 Map endpapers, b&w and colour reproductions, maps. "To storm and take Quebec (William Pitt) chose thirty-two year old James Wolfe, the soldier so much admired by Nelson. On ly a few month earlier Wolfe had become secretly engaged, but as a professional soldier he embarked for North America with the utmost enthusiasm. His task was not made easier by the facts that he was opposed by the Marquis de Montcalm, outst a n d i n g for his courage and chivalry; the French had recently been reinforced and were making skilful use of savage Red Indian auxiliaries; and Wolfe's three brigadiers were highly critical and jealous of his promotion over their heads. Finall y, t he a pp ro a ch up the St. Lawrence was extraordinarily difficult owing to its complex shoals. On the other hand, Wolfe had been chosen for his superb handling of men; his expedition included one of the great navigators of history, James Coo ke; an d h elp fr om Ad miral Saunders proved a landmark in the development of combined operations. The advantages were therefore more or less equally divided between the opposing armies. With absorbing skill (the author) recounts the fluctuatio ns o f th e ac tion whi ch led to Wolfe's brilliant victory, death and apotheosis. To follow each stage of the engagement through the accounts of the men who were there - and through the remarkable illustrations collected in this book - is to exp erien ce pe rsona lly o ne of th e th ree great victories of the 'annus mirabilis'."
