A DICTIONARY OF THEATRE ANTHROPOLOGY: THE SECRET ART OF THE PERFORMER., Barba, Eugenio and Savarese, Nicola. Translated by Richard Fowler.
4 Barba, Eugenio and Savarese, Nicola. Translated by Richard Fowler. A DICTIONARY OF THEATRE ANTHROPOLOGY: THE SECRET ART OF THE PERFORMER.
London Routledge for the Centre of Performance Research 1995 0415053080 / 9780415053082 Reprint Soft Cover Very Good+
272 pp, 11 5/8" H. "(S)ubtly juxtaposes the visual demonstrations of the performer's craft, from a wealth of Oriental and Occidental sources, to uncover knowledge of action in the heightened context of performance - from combat to religion and ritual. Whereas most Western research is concerned with naturalism and psychological realism in acting, the Dictionary focuses on the performer's arduous and eclectic craft. More than just a dictionary, however, it is a handbook for theatre practitioners and a guide for students and scholars of transcultural performance. It is a result of ten years' research conducted by Eugenio Barba and the International School of Theatre Anthropology (ISTA) based in Denmark. ISTA works with practitioners of theatre and dance from the major Oriental and Occidental traditions to study the underlying principles of the performer's technique. The Dictionary aims to expand our knowledge of the possibilities of the scenic body, and of the spectator's response to the dynamics of performance. (It) has practical sections on balance, opposition and montage, among other techniques, and discusses issues including 'The Text and the Stage', 'The Dilated Body', and 'Energetic Language'. The visual essay of photographs, drawings and diagrams which runs parallel to the text is skilfully constructed to complement the textual argument. The result is not only a lavishly illustrated sourcebook on Western and non-Western theatre - much of it until now little known - but an inspiring tribute to the secret art of the performer." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - tiny dint on fore-edge of text block, old stock label on rear cover, minor rubbing.

THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS SOCIAL HISTORY OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR., Bishop, James. Foreword by Lord Blake.
5 Bishop, James. Foreword by Lord Blake. THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS SOCIAL HISTORY OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR.
London Angus & Robertson 1982 0207148260 / 9780207148262 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
144 pp, 10 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w reproductions of photographs, drawings, advertisements. "The First World War, which claimed the lives of so many men on the battlefields of the Western Front, also profoundly affected the character and everyday life of the nation at home. It was the first 'total war' and the whole country contributed to the war effort. The unrelenting demands of the trenches eventually forced the Government to introduce conscription while, for those left behind, the state intervened more and more in the lives of its citizens. Hardships increased: food and fuel were in very short supply and rationing had to be imposed in 1916. The civilian population was also directly involved in the hostilities with the bombing raids of zeppelins and aeroplanes. But the war did bring some changes for the better. The salaried classes grew, working conditions improved and the war also helped liberate women who replaced men in factories and public services, and joined the armed forces. When the armistice finally came, in November 1918, Lloyd George promised 'a fit country for heroes to live in' - though the reality proved to be less Utopian. The Illustrated London News continued to publish throughout the First World War and was supplemented by The Illustrated War News. These magazines provided a vivid pictorial chronicle of contemporary events and enable us, today, to enter into the spirit of a bygone era. (The author) has written a fascinating and fully-documented account of these momentous years, complemented by over 200 pictures from the original issues." Light edge wear to boards. Dust jacket has one tiny edge tear, light foxing at top & bottom inside edges, very light edge wrinkling, a few tiny dents and faint line indentations on front panel.

6 Borawski, John. SECURITY FOR A NEW EUROPE: THE VIENNA NEGOTIATIONS ON CONFIDENCE- AND SECURITY-BUILDING MEASURES 1989-90, AND BEYOND.
London Brassey's (UK) 1992 1857530403 / 9781857530407 First English Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
235 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). "While the 'traditional' threat of East-West military confrontation appears much reduced, events in Yugoslavia have removed any complacency about the stability of the new Europe unfolding around us. New threats - territorial quarrels, nationalism, and the demise of the Soviet Union as a unitary state - require a radically new approach to European security. The creation of an effective security system will be highly dependent on the trust and co-operation between the former Warsaw Treaty Organisation countries and their new-found NATO allies. As their title suggests, the Vienna Negotiations on Confidence- and Security-Building Measures aimed to do exactly this, by fostering greater openness about military organisation and activity. John Borawski's history of the negotiations provides a detailed analysis of the issues involved, indicating the likely direction of future talks following the watershed March-July 1992 CSCE follow-up meeting in Helsinki, and highlighting their extreme relevance to the problems confronting European policy-makers today. As they continue to seek an alternative to the limited, hardware-based negotiations of the past, 'Security for a New Europe' grows in importance as a source of ideas for problems old and new." Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, light rubbing.

In this lively and perhaps contentious survey, (the authors) explore the political and economic forces that shaped this era of change. Beginning at the turn of the century, they consider the status of Canada in the empire and the world, the burgeoning growth of its economy, and the development of social and labour problems, up to the eruption of war in 1914. They discuss the political currents running through Canada during two wars, the interwar economic boom and depression, and the plans for post-war reconstruction, and assess the impact of these and other events on Canada's political, economic, social, and cultural institutions." 192 pp, square large 8vo (9 1/4" H x 9 1/4" D). B&w photographs. "The immigrants who came to Canada in the ten years following the Second World War settled in a booming land with many new jobs to fill. The immigrants' reasons for coming here and their experiences in the new society were as varied as their own backgrounds. First were the war brides, some married after only a few weeks of courtship; there were refugees and displaced persons from e astern Europe and Russia; there were British and Dutch farm families, and thousands of others looking for a fresh start far from battle-scarred Europe. Then in the fifties came the Asians and blacks. Jean Bruce, herself an immigrant, tells through hundreds of in-depth intervies across Canada of these people as they fulfilled their dreams, and dispelled fears while establishing new roots. She has ranged the country in selecting photos from churches, ethnic organizations, private albums, the Public Archives, and diverse libraries and museums. In dealing not only with the immigrant experience, but also with changing attitudes towards immigration within Canadian society, (she) has raised issues which will continue to be important and controversial. But most importantly, she has created a portrait of Canada at a vibrant period in its history, a period which was to change the face of the nation forever." CHINA REVISITED, AFTER FORTY-TWO YEARS., Chiang Yee. (The Silent Traveller.)
13 Chiang Yee. (The Silent Traveller.) CHINA REVISITED, AFTER FORTY-TWO YEARS.
New York W.W. Norton 1977 03930879143 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Chiang Yee.
180 pp, 9 1/2" H. Illustrated throughout with the author's b&w drawings & calligraphy. "In 1933, Chiang Yee, then the governor of a district in China, was forced to leave his homeland after an argument with a warlord. The China he left was an unhealthy country: a weak central government unable to control the power of the warlords; a deteriorating economic condition; a reputation for corruption based on an ill-defined and unsatisfactory land-tax system; widespread illiteracy and famine. In 1975, after an absence of forty-two years, he returned to China. In this book he tells of his travels and records his impressions of the new China as compared to the China he left. In addition, his two grown daughters, who, along with their mother, remained in China, provide another perspective on China's progress. As Mr. Chiang travels through China, he tells of his visits to both well-known and less familiar landmarks; he describes the communes and factories of light industry which have been built in the last twenty-five years. He attends the May First celebration - the important festival of labor. But, above all, he contrasts the backwards country he left with the brand-new independent nation that has been emerging over the last twenty-five years. He points with pride to the accomplishments: 800 million Chinese living and working together in a united spirit; the feeling of peace and prosperity; no unemployment; sufficient food for all; great technical, scientific, and educational advances; increased literacy; universal medicare; and vast improvements in the status of women." Small faint scuff at top of fore-edge of text block, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price clipped, has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, some light waviness on front panel, very light browning - mainly at edges, small light stain at top edge of spine, two line indentations across spine, protected in a mylar sleeve.

HOPE IS THE THING WITH FEATHERS: A PERSONAL CHRONICLE OF VANISHED BIRDS., Cokinos, Christopher.
14 Cokinos, Christopher. HOPE IS THE THING WITH FEATHERS: A PERSONAL CHRONICLE OF VANISHED BIRDS.
New York Jeremy P. Tarcher / Putnam 2000 1585420069 / 9781585420063 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
359 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "There was a time when massive flocks of Passenger Pigeons blotted out the sun, and bright green Carolina Parakeets were so numerous that they looked, according to an early American pioneer, 'like an atmosphere of gems.' But these birds - as well as the Labrador Duck, the Ivory-billed Woodpecker, the Heath Hen, and the Great Auk - now live only as tantalizing but hazy legends. Driven by a desire to understand how and why this came to be, (the author) embarked on ten years of extraordinary detective work. Traveling from Bird Rock in the Gulf of St. Lawrence to Louisiana's tangled bayous in search of those who stalked these birds and those who tried to save them, he discovered strange stories and glorious quests, tales of scientific heroism and political stupidity, of inconceivable apathy and equally astonishing personal devotion. A compelling blend of science, history, politics, and memoir, (this) is a richly detailed and ultimately uplifting narrative of dedication, discovery, and wonder." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine. THE MEANING OF PUCK: HOW HOCKEY EXPLAINS MODERN CANADA., Dowbiggin, Bruce.
17 Dowbiggin, Bruce. THE MEANING OF PUCK: HOW HOCKEY EXPLAINS MODERN CANADA.
Key Porter, Toronto, 2008, first edition.
232 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 9781554700417 "In a series of essays that is a road trip across the nation's cultural landscape, (Dowbiggin) shows how the national passion for hockey reflects - or deflects - the issues of globalization, regionalism, anti-Americanism, militarism, violence, racism and greed. Why are Canadians, for instance, such strenuous advocates of pacifism and non-militarism around the world while simultaneously embracing - and promoting - the world's most vicious and violent brand of hockey? As the legion of apologists for Todd Bertuzzi's thuggish play dramatize, it's not the Americans who popularize violence in hockey. It's us. Dowbiggen tries to come to terms with the absurd hero worship of The Great One. Or why Canadians so smugly spoof American ignorance while making a 'cultural' icon of Don Cherry. Is it because in a nation without rules or standards he still stands for something, however distasteful? (He) conducts an autopsy on the essentially permanent futility of the Toronto Maple Leafs and shows how the team's declining fortunes mirror the shift in power and influence from Ontario to the West, particularly Alberta. As fans outside Ontario chafe at the Toronto- centrism of 'Hockey Night in Canada', they seek a new locus of hockey influence. Dowbiggin explores questions such as: Why the Vancouver Canucks are the new frontier? What do you mean the Montreal Canadiens are owned by an American? Why is hockey such a safe place for characters such as Alan Eagleson, Graham James and David Frost to hide? And why is it so hard to get them out once they've attached themselves to power? Most of all: Why does the sniff of the Canadian jock have such a hypnotic effect on our culture? 'The Meaning of Puck' is a funny, acidic, irreverent, argumentative and often infuriating but always thought-provoking look into the fabric of a nation straining to keep old traditions alive and incorporate new national myths." 111 pp, 8 7/8" H. B&w drawings. "Howard Dundas casts an irreverent eye on many of the sacred cows of yesteryear. With humorous insights, he lays bare many of the underlying assumptions so dear to our forefathers. He touches on many issues which are still current in the West: colonial attitudes, male chauvinism, the French fact in Manitoba, the revolution in social and sexual mores. Mentioned in passing are the deals past governments made with the CPR and the HBC, to say nothing of the exploitation of Westerners for Eastern interests. Whether Dundas stretches the truth or not, what matters is that he expresses the feelings of the average intelligent Winnipeg citizen growing up and learning in the most lively and witty of Canadian cities." Toronto Macmillan Canada 1961 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
195 pp, 8 3/4" H. "A brilliant intelligence is brought to bear on the vital issues of Canadian defence and foreign policy, on Canada's relations with the U.S. and the British Commonwealth and the Communist bloc. Canadians do not always look at these problems in the same way as their North American neighbours. This book considers the Canadian 'style' in approaching such questions. (Discusses) difficult and frightening issues such as the location of the Great Deterrent, the acquisition of nuclear weaons, the fate of the Avro Arrow, civil defence. (Eayrs) examines the 'Nostrum of Neutralism' and while he concedes its appeal, concludes that the arguments in its favour are not valid at present. Commonwealth concerns, the monarchy, America's ill-fated intervention in Cuba, the role of the United Nations, the non-recognition of Communist China - all these questions and others of the kind are fearlessly and realistically discussed."
