9 Ashe, Geoffrey. FROM CAESAR TO ARTHUR.
London Collins 1960 First Edition Hard Cover Good+ Good-
320 p, 8 1/2" H. "(A) study of the life and career of the historical King Arthur in so far as it can be traced through early documents and remains. (The author) begins with the decay of Roman power and its slow disappearance from Britain, while invasion, anarchy and warring small kingdoms take its place. Then comes a reversal of fortune without parallel in the dissolving Empire, when a western Christian military chieftain stems the Saxon tide and imposes a long truce. In this unique recovery, it is suggested, lies a previously unnoticed clue to the whole development of the British monarchy. The kingdom finally created by Alfred the Great and his successors turns out to have been decisively affected by the earlier achievement of Arthur and the failure of the first Saxon attempt at conquest. Piecing together his fragments of history to form the most vivid possible whole, Mr. Ashe explains how the great tradition of Arthur flowed into the Arthurian Legend, and shows how that legend, fantastic and romantic as it is, nevertheless embodies a profound historical insight." Very light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, moderate browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, a few tiny and small edge tears, a few tiny scuffs on spine, minor edge browning, protected in a mylar sleeve.

218 pp, 10" H. "This study examines the conflict between the Europeans and the Indians precipitated by the arrival of the French in the New World. The Indians were necessarily affected by the fur trade and the religious and social development of New France, and the meeting of contrary cultures resulted in most cases in the obliteration of that of the Indian. However, a fusion of Indian and European elements sometimes occurred, resulting in the birth of a 'Canadian' culture. First published in 1937, this volume is a reprinting of the original text with the addition of an index and a chapter appraising some of the leading developments of the past few years." VANISHING SCHOOLS, THREATENED COMMUNITIES: THE CONTESTED SCHOOLHOUSE IN MARITIME CANADA, 1850-2010., Bennett, Paul W.
17 Bennett, Paul W. VANISHING SCHOOLS, THREATENED COMMUNITIES: THE CONTESTED SCHOOLHOUSE IN MARITIME CANADA, 1850-2010.
Halifax Fernwood 2011 1552664015 / 9781552664018 Soft Cover Near Fine
190 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs. "Traditional schoolhouses and neighbourhood schools are disappearing at an alarming rate, making way for huge schools that serve multiple communities and adhere to the logic of modernization, centralization, and uniformity. In (this book, the author) explores the phenomenon of school closures, focusing on the little known and contentious history of public schooling in Maritime Canada from 1850 to the present. In a lively and stimulating narrative, (he) examines the rise of common schooling from one-room schoolhouses that encouraged local democratic control through to 'super sized' schools governed by a vast bureaucracy that silences public participation. Local 'save our schools' movements do arise in cities, towns, and villages throughout the Maritimes but rarely succeed in slowing the unrelenting march of 'progress'. Bennett contends that, in both urban and rural Maritime Canada, closing schools rips out a social anchor vital to community survival and imperils the democratic ideals that originally guided the public school system. He shows that education is increasingly dominated by a bureaucratic state where the 'bigger is better' ideology and an impersonal, unresponsive organizational apparatus drive the entire system. The book closes with a clarion call to completely reinvent public education to better serve the needs of our children and our communities." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - light waviness to edges of text block.
