BIRTH OF THE BATTLESHIP: BRITISH CAPITAL SHIP DESIGN 1870-1881., Beeler, John.
2 Beeler, John. BIRTH OF THE BATTLESHIP: BRITISH CAPITAL SHIP DESIGN 1870-1881.
Caxton, London, 2003, reprint.
224 pp, 4to (11 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1840675349 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, drawings, diagrams, plans. "The 1870s and 1880s have traditionally been seen as the 'Dark Ages' of British warship design, where techn ological conservatism and a lack of any definite design policy produced a confusing mix of ship types, with armament and machinery which were outmoded before the ships were even completed. This new book, however, is a powerful refutation of t h a t v i ew, expanding the scope of its study of the ships of this period beyond the narrowly technological to reveal the full range of strategic, logistical and administrative factors which influenced warship development, arguing that it is her e th at t h e or igins of the modern battleship can be found. The author gives an insight into the difficulties faced by warship designers in an age of rapid technological change, and sets out the valid strategic and technical reasons that lay beh in d s uch se em in gly 'reactionary' policies as the fitting of sails in cruising ironclads, and the Navy's retention of muzzle-loading guns well into the 1880s. Far from having no plan, it is shown that the warship designers of this period had a v ery clea r id ea of the types of ship required to meet the range of roles the Royal Navy was called upon to fulfill in defence of a global empire, and that the problems that the ships of this period had owed more to political, financial and admi nist rati ve pr essur es tha n an y lack of competance on the part of their designers." ADMIRALS IN COLLISION., Hough, Richard.
3 Hough, Richard. ADMIRALS IN COLLISION.
Hamish Hamilton, London, 1959, first edition.
174 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "On June 22nd, 1893, the British Mediterranean Fleet, the greatest naval fighting force and the most powerful weapon in the world, was on peacetime manoeuvres off Syria. The weather was fine, the sea calm, the eleven great ironclads were cruising in perfect formation at moderate speed. Then, at 3:31 p.m. the order was given from the flagship to bring the fleet, through a delicate and complex evolution, to its anchorage off Tripoli, barely three miles distant. The calamitous result of this signal was to strike horror throughout Europe and America, and to bring into disrepute the conduct, the principles of tactics and of discipline, and the fundamentals of w a r s h i p design, in the Royal Navy. The author has explored deeply into the causes of this strange and obscure catastrophe that created such outrage, but was never satisfactorily explained then, and ever since has been the subject of controv e rs y an d pr ej ud ice. The incident concerned two battleships, crack men-o'-war that were hardly safe even in peace; two admirals, strongly contrasting in temperament, intelligence and authority; and a series of fluttering flags that initiated t he ex tr aor di nar y e vol ution. Richard Hough believes that the answer to the enigma must lie in the characters of these admirals, Sir George Tryon, K.C.B., and Albert Hastings Markham; the one imperious, intimidating and self-confident; the ot her ear nes t an d w ell- inte ntio ned, but anxious and fretful. This account of their backgrounds and service careers, which sympathetically reveals their personalities (sometimes with pungent humour) makes a story which can be read as the dual biog raphi es o f men who appe ar as dest ined for explosive fusion. The events of that sultry summer afternoon....make fascinating reading for anyone interested in the sea,and in men's behaviour in crisis." Some light browning nad light wavine ss on endpa pers, faint tiny foxin g mark s on t op of text block. Dust jacket has been price clipped, has light edge wear, tiny chips and small tears - some archivally taped, minor soiling on rear panel. Very Good/Very Good-

THE WORLD'S GREAT BATTLESHIPS: FROM THE MIDDLE AGES TO THE PRESENT., Jackson, Robert.
4 Jackson, Robert. THE WORLD'S GREAT BATTLESHIPS: FROM THE MIDDLE AGES TO THE PRESENT.
Brown, London, 2000.
144 pp, 4to (11 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1897884605 Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w photograph, reproductions, profiles, cutaways. "Beginning with the age of sail and the Battle of Trafalgar, the book describes the devel opment of the first primitive ironclads with traversing turrets, the battles of the American Civil War, and the heyday of the battleship in the decades before the outbreak of World War I. (It) shows how new technologies helped shape naval tactics a n d the advances in ship design during the nineteenth century, culminating in two new classes of ship, the dreadnought and the battlecruiser, that saw much action at the Battle of Jutland and the other naval encounters of World War I, and which ar e al so discussed in depth here. By World War II the battleship, threatened by the submarine and difficult to protect from either underwater or aerial attack, had been usurped by the aircraft carrier from its position as prime naval weapon - as was d ram atically demonstrated at Pearl Harbor. They remained potent threats, however, and (this book) covers the notable battles of the war, including the exploits of the Graf Spee, Bismarck and Tirpitz in the Atlantic and North Sea, and the Yamato in the Pacific. Finally the gradual postwar decommissioning of the last true battleships is described, along with the last swansongs of the American 'Iowa' class in the Vietnam and Gulf Wars before their final retirement." Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light rubbing - mainly on re ar p anel, small indent mark on rear panel. Very Good/Very Good
