390 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0807823201 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "During the late summer of 1862, Confederate forces launched a three-pronged strategic advance into the North in both major theaters of t he war. The results of this offensive - the only coordinated Confederate attempt to carry the conflict to the enemy - were disastrous. In the eastern theater, Lee was forced out of Maryland after his defeat at Antietam, and in the West, Bra g g w a g e d a dismal campaign and had to retreat from Kentucky. The third prong of the Confederate offensive, the northern Mississippi campaign, culminated in devastating defeats at Iuka and Corinth that ultimately opened the way for Grant's cam pa ig n a ga in st Vicksburg. Peter Cozzens here presents the first book-length study of the battles of Iuka and Corinth...(and) details the tactical aspects of each battle, analyzing troop movements down to the regimental level. In addition to a v ivi d and de tai led battle narrative, Cozzens provides compelling portraits of the campaign's key leaders: Generals Grant, Rosecrans, Van Dorn, and Price. He exposes the consequences of their clashing ambitions and antipathies....Finally, (h e) a naly ze s th e la rger , st rategic implications of the northern Mississippi campaign, exploring the repercussions of the Confederate defeat suffered at Iuka and Corinth." CARTESIAN SONATA AND OTHER NOVELLAS., Gass, William H.
6 Gass, William H. CARTESIAN SONATA AND OTHER NOVELLAS.
Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 1998, First edition.
274 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "...four interrelated novellas that explore Mind, Matter, and God. In the first novella, Gass redefines Descartes' philosophy. God is a writer in a constant state of fumble. Mind is represented by a housewife who is a modern-day Cassandra. And Matter is, what (and who) else but the helpless and confused husband of Mind. In the novella that follows, the concept of salvation is explored through material possessions - a collection of kitsch - as a traveling salesman is slowly lost in the sheer surfeit of matter in a small Illinois town. In another, Gas explores the mind's ability to escape. A young woman growing up in rural Iowa finds herself losing touch with the physical world as she loses herself in the poetry of Elizabeth Bishop. And in 'The Master of Secret Revenges', God appears in the form of Descartes' evil demon, Lucifer, as Gass chronicles the life of a young man named Luther and his development from his devilish youth to his demonic adulthood. A profound exploration of good and evil, philosophy and action, filled with the wit and style that have defined the work of William Gass." Tiny faint mark on bottom of textblock. THE WORLD'S GREAT BATTLESHIPS: FROM THE MIDDLE AGES TO THE PRESENT., Jackson, Robert.
8 Jackson, Robert. THE WORLD'S GREAT BATTLESHIPS: FROM THE MIDDLE AGES TO THE PRESENT.
Brown, London, 2000.
144 pp, 4to (11 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1897884605 Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w photograph, reproductions, profiles, cutaways. "Beginning with the age of sail and the Battle of Trafalgar, the book describes the devel opment of the first primitive ironclads with traversing turrets, the battles of the American Civil War, and the heyday of the battleship in the decades before the outbreak of World War I. (It) shows how new technologies helped shape naval tactics a n d the advances in ship design during the nineteenth century, culminating in two new classes of ship, the dreadnought and the battlecruiser, that saw much action at the Battle of Jutland and the other naval encounters of World War I, and which ar e al so discussed in depth here. By World War II the battleship, threatened by the submarine and difficult to protect from either underwater or aerial attack, had been usurped by the aircraft carrier from its position as prime naval weapon - as was d ram atically demonstrated at Pearl Harbor. They remained potent threats, however, and (this book) covers the notable battles of the war, including the exploits of the Graf Spee, Bismarck and Tirpitz in the Atlantic and North Sea, and the Yamato in the Pacific. Finally the gradual postwar decommissioning of the last true battleships is described, along with the last swansongs of the American 'Iowa' class in the Vietnam and Gulf Wars before their final retirement." University of Iowa Press, Iowa City, 1989.
544 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0877452652 "(The) story of the men who spent their youth designing and building England's first flying-machines: the men who pioneered the British aircraft industry. Some of their airc raft have achieved immortality - the legendary Pup, Camel, Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster. But of the men who designed and built them, men like Frederick Handley Page, Tommy Sopwith, George Holt Thomas and Geoffrey de Havilland, perhaps o n l y R o l ls and Royce are still household names. These pioneers of aviation development began to build their empires during Worl;d War I, although several of them crashed during the bleak period that followed. World War II revived their fortun es , as so me ho w they met the challenge of enormously increased production and helped save England from invasion. They tested the early jets and speedily built the first post-war jet airliner. But already they were making errors which would res ult i n b a nkr upt cie s, forced mergers and foreign takeovers. Peter King describes the knight in all their glamour, skill, idiosyncrasy, greed, flair and desire for power. Quotations from previously unpublished papers, from colleagues and cont empo rar ies, a nd f rom cust omers (governments, the British Air Force, commercial airlines) for the first time describe how wilful they could be, as well as how brilliantly enterprising and entertaining." 13 Kinsella, W.P. IF WISHES WERE HORSES.
HarperCollins, (Toronto, 1996), Ist edition.
216 pp, large 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. "Remember Ray Kinsella, the baseball visionary...from 'Shoeless Joe'? Or Gideon Clarke, the hero from 'The Iowa Baseball Confederacy', who, after a miraculous sojourn in the past, proved that what he a nd his father new about a Midwestern baseball league was entirely true? Nobody believed either of them. And nobody believes Joe McCoy. Joe McCoy's only hope is that Ray Kinsella and Gideon Clarke will believe his fantastical tale. Joe k n o w s t h a t , if he had to do it over again, he definitely would have pitched the Iowa State Baseball Championship, for sure married his tough but sexy high school sweetheart Maureen - and would never have written that crazy story about the U FO s ig ht in g . N ow h e's on the run from the law, accused of hijacking a jet and kidnapping a baby. B&w photographs. "Wallace Kirkland has been a photographer for 'Life Magazine' since it began. One of the editors of that magazine is said to have remarked upon hearing of the book, 'I always said you were the world's worst photographer, and the world's best writer'. This book consists of the stories behind Kirkland's photographic assignments - some of the ones which became famous: The Fox Hunt, The Birth of the Dragonfly, and Jamaican Boyhood: A Memory, and Man of Letters: Arthur Birnstengle, who wrote his congressman for a wife with extra ordinary results, and some of the ones which were never run, such as the Portrait of Gandhi when he got Gandhi's autograph on the tail end of a goat. The range of writing in this book is as wide as the Missouri. Mr. Kirkland goes from some exceptionally beautiful nature writing in the chapter on Turtles to moving remembrances of things and people in Jamaican Boyhood; to rowdy vignettes in the Life of a Wandering Photographer. Through all his adventures we see A Hero of our Time, a Don Quixote with a camera who is doing the work which he likes best."
