3 Grauerholz, Angela. APORIA: A BOOK OF LANDSCAPES.
Oakville, Ontario Oakville Galleries 1995 0921027559 / 9780921027553 Soft Cover Very Good Good
Unpaginated, 8vo (8 1/2" H). Opaque printed mylar dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "This bookwork, produced by Oakville Galleries, represents the third and final version of a photographic work begun two years ago at the Domaine de Kerguehennec in Brittany, France, where it took the form of a work in situ: a 'fonds photographic' that was placed in the drawers of the castle's library to become a permanent installation. The work represents a monument to a fictional woman photographer who lived in the castle sometime in the late 19th century, and who wandered the park - especially the area around the lake - obsessively taking pictures of the landscape. Her mental health slowly deterioriated and eventually she killed herself. Her decline is illustrated in the photographs placed in the drawers in porfolio folders or boxes - ." Book is cocked, minor soiling marks on bottom of textblock. Dust jacket has a few small chips and creases, 2" tears at top of flap-folds, small soiling mark at top corner of front panel very light browning to spine/hinges.

HARPSICHORD DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION., Kern, Evan J.
4 Kern, Evan J. HARPSICHORD DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION.
Van Nostrand Reinhold, New York, (1980), Ist edition.
143 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photos, drawings, diagrams. "Here is all the information the novice harpsichord maker needs to build an instrument that meets his or her specifications as to compass, scale, and size. Step-by-step, this definitive work clearly spells out the myriad of details essential to creating a harpsichord that encompasses the appropriate range, produces desired sound quality and necessary volume, and is both an object of beauty and easy to play. The thorough description of the structure of the harpsichord and its basic elements gives full attention to the physical properties of strings, the string scale, the number of choirs, calculating string length, and developing a string plan. The keyboard, jacks, soundboard, wrest plank, and harpsichord case are also covered in meticulous detail. The reader will find down-to-earth guidance on every phase of the design process, from a discussion of the drafting instruments and spacing gauges needed to precise explanations for drawing plans for each part of the harpsichord - in the exact order required. You will also discover how to break down the complex construction process into a series of smaller, simpler steps...how to select the optiumum building material for each component of the instrument...how to laminate the bent side...how to achieve proper key touch...how to test mechanisms before installation...Here, too, are the specialized construction tools you need, exact instructions for fitting all the parts together, and numerous illustrations and tables covering such essential details as the properties of music wire, Mersenne's multipliers, fraction and decimal equivalents, and drill and lead hole sizes." PUBLIC SERVANT, SECRET AGENT: THE ELUSIVE LIFE AND VIOLENT DEATH OF AIREY NEAVE., Routledge, Paul.
8 Routledge, Paul. PUBLIC SERVANT, SECRET AGENT: THE ELUSIVE LIFE AND VIOLENT DEATH OF AIREY NEAVE.
London Fourth Estate 2002 1841552447 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+
392 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "On 30 March 1979 for the first time in more than 100 years an MP was killed in the precincts of the House of Commons. And his was a very violent death: a bomb, triggered by the ascent of his car up the ramp from the underground car park, detonated enough explosives to sever his legs from his body and render him unrecognisable. Airey Neave was a loyal Tory backbencher who had last held ministerial office in 1959. What, then, had he done to deserve such a vicious and bloody attack? Neave was an extraordinary man. Eton and Oxford educated, he served in the Royal Artillery and was captured and ultimately imprisoned in Colditz. He became the first Briton to escape. On the strength of his experience he was recruited by the security services to a divison of MI6 and was an advisor on escape and insurrection in occupied Europe until the end of the second world war. (After his work at the Nuremberg trials he) moved into open politics, as MP for Abingdon from 1953, without ever losing his taste for the covert. A shadowy figure on the right of the Conservative party, he ploted the overthrow of Ted Heath and the installation of Margaret Thatcher. (When Neave asked Thatcher for Northern Ireland, the) intelligence services found they had one of their men in a pivotal role at a crucial moment. To Irish Nationalists, Neave was a threat that could not be allowed to thrive. His life and death were enacted in the deep shadows just behind the glare of public life." Slight lean to spine, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny edge tear on page leaf 259/260, slight toning to edged of text block, tiny white stains on fore-edge of rear board. Dust jacket has minor edge wear, minor rubbing, moderate wrinkling at top of spine and flap-folds - light wrinkling elsewhere.

633 SQUADRON: OPERATION VALKYRIE, Smith, Frederick E.
9 Smith, Frederick E. 633 SQUADRON: OPERATION VALKYRIE
Cassell, London, 1978, first edition.
235 pp, 8vo (8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0304300551 "It is now February 1944 and Air Commodore Davies and General Staines of the American 8th Air Force have just received one of Churchill's most feared ACTION THIS DAY directives. A you ng Norwegian officer, Paul Lindstrom, has arrived in England with the news that the Germans are shipping out a large consignment of heavy water in less than two weeks. Once in Germany it will be processed in a bomb-proof installation. The t h r e a t i s overwhelming: the stocks must be destroyed in transit. Davies is visibly shaken. 633 Squadron's cruel sacrifice the previous spring to kill the heavy water threat has left its mark on him, and the thought of having to send his crews b ac k in to No rway subdues his characteristic elan. He and Staines learn that a group of Norwegian freedom fighters led by Captain Haukelid intend trying to sabotage the consignment when it is in transit on the ferryboat 'Hydro'. What Haukelid do es no t k now , ho wever, is that the Germans intend to hedge their bets by sending half the consignment to a cruiser berthed at the head of the Hardanger Fjord. Because of elaborate security precautions, Lindstrom informs S.O.E. that these st ocks ca nno t be sab ot aged in transit: the cruiser itself must be sunk when the stocks are aboard. It sounds simple, but for all kinds of cogent reasons it is in fact an insoluble problem for 633 Squadron - until Frank Adams, the squadron's In telli genc e Of ficer , com es up wi th a bizarre suggestion that will involve Norwegian and American assistance. It will put the squadron in great peril, but with no other option open to Davies, the magnitude of the threat forces him to act. The extrao rdina ry mi ssion that f oll ows, w hich graphically illustrates the scacrifices and tragedies of war, makes a climax as vivid and compelling as anything the author has yet written about this famous Special Service Unit of Mosquitoes." Light cigare tte od or, fa int er ased pe ncil marks on free front end paper, book slightly cracked at title page - pages holding firmly, light browning to pages and edges of text block, slight wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor ed ge wear, soft c reases at top of rear panel , light rubbing, three tiny dints on hinges, light browning at top edge - very light on spine and flap-folds, two small areas of surface paper loss on front panel due to sticker removal.
