"This book shatters many long-held conceptions of how and why (the disastrous charge of the Light Brigade) happened, and w ho was to to blame. For the first time in many years a former professional soldier has combined military expertise, detailed research of participants' accounts with a careful study of the actual ground. The result is a gripping and definiti v e b o o k for the general reader and the military buff alike." Light cigarette odor, minor browning to edges of text block. MEN AT ARNHEM., Angus, Tom.
2 Angus, Tom. MEN AT ARNHEM.
Leo Cooper, London, (1977), reprint.
208 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850522153 B&w maps, organization chart. "Tom Angus sets out to apportion no blame, nor does he seek to analyse the reasons for the failure of the operation. His aim is simply to describe w hat it was like to be a 30-year old company commander during those eight days in hell. For obvious reasons, the characters are not all drawn straight from life. The names are changed and he does not specify the units concerned. But the e v e n t s h e describes did happen just where and when and how he describes them; so if this is not a conventional work of military history nor is it by any means fiction. It is a remarkable and intensely moving account of one of those great mi li ta ry t ra ge d ie s w hich only the British seem able to turn into triumphs, and as a book it certainly triumphs over all conventional accounts of that blood-drenched sacrifice that was the Battle of Arnhem. It is also the finest evocation of an inf ant rym an' s w ar to b e published for many years and will become a classic in its field." RED-TAPE AND PIGEON-HOLE GENERALS: ANDREW A. HUMPHREYS IN THE ARMY OF THE POTOMAC., Arner, Frederick B., commentary. (William H. Armstrong.) Foreword by Charles T. Joyce.
3 Arner, Frederick B., commentary. (William H. Armstrong.) Foreword by Charles T. Joyce. RED-TAPE AND PIGEON-HOLE GENERALS: ANDREW A. HUMPHREYS IN THE ARMY OF THE POTOMAC.
Rockbridge, Charlottesville, Virginia, 1999, first edition.
378 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1883522153 B&w photographs, maps, reproductions. "Regarded as anonymously written fiction when it was originally published in 1864, this rollicking story of the way it was in the Union 's Army of the Potomac is a thinly disguised tale of truth. It is, in fact, a scathing attack on the character and military ability of Gen. Andrew Atkinson Humphreys. The author, Lt. Col. William H. Armstrong of the 129th Pennyslvania Voluntee r I n fantry, risked a libel action to send his message, yet he recognized that abuses within the system could not be addressed without first being exposed. The tale also includes a vivid, firsthand description of the brutal history of the 129th a nd th e Tyler Brigade and poignant stories of its men - Frederick B Arner's perceptive and comprehensive commentary identifies the main players and units and taps primary sources that support Armstrong's point of view - A masterpiece of historic sl eut h ing a nd disciplined research, this volume may change the way some historians view General Humphreys." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very minor rubbing on rear panel. Near Fine/Near Fine

" 'If there is no objection, I will take my Division tomorrow and go to Gettysburg.' With these words Major- General Henry Heth set in train the course of events culminating in the titanic clash around the small Pennsylvania town of Gettysburg. On 1 July two Confederate Corps swept towards this strategic crossroads as Federal troops fought a desper a t e d e l aying action. The men of the Army of Northern Virginia were the best in the Confederacy. Under Robert E. Lee they had whipped every Federal force sent against them, and they were confident this time would be no exception. As the firs t at ta c ks s we pt forward full of confidence they were met by a storm of fire. Judging from the determination of their bluecoated adversaries this was going to be no ordinary fight." "(This series) presents the military enthusiast with a new a ng le on th e m ajo r b attlefields of history. "The Battle of the Hook was probably the last full-scale infantry battle, fought on traditional lines, that the world will ever see. It was also a classic set-piece example of a battalion in defence and was, in terms of steel, the biggest battle of the Korean War, and the most concentrated confrontation of artillery support and engineering effort since the First World War. In it the Black Watch and t he Duke of Wellington's Regiment defeated and completely routed a fanatical Chinese army who attacked them over a period of some fifteen days with incredible ferocity. The Chinese losses were so great that they never attempted such assaul t s a g a i n . It was a turning point of the Korean War and a triumph of British arms...." 311 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0887621333 Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "On June 6, 1944, nearly 15,000 Canadians - at sea, in the air, and on the ground - joined the long-anticipated D-Day inva sion of Nazi-occupied Europe on the Normandy beaches. The piece of ground on which the Canadian fought so hard against heavily armed and entrenched German troops was code-named 'Juno'. On that day, the Canadians fought their way farther inland t h a n any other Allied troops. For Canada, this was an extraordinary moment of bravery, sacrifice, and coming of age in the nation's history....(This book) tells the story of Juno in the voices of the men who were there - young farmers from Manit ob a an d Saskatchewan, fresh-faced high-school graduates from Ontario, workers from mines and factories in the Maritimes, and eager recruits from Quebec and Newfoundland....In what might be described as 'Canada's longest day', we join the action ho ur by ho ur, minute by minute. We take to the skies with the airmen who flew fighters and bombers over the beaches. We ply the Channel with the sailors who swept the waters of German mines and navigated landing craft to the French coast line . We go in wit h troops who leapt off those craft into waters bristling with booby-trapped obstacles and raked by machinegun fire to establish a foothold on Juno Beach. Ted Barris has interviewed hundreds of veterans to piece together one of Canada's pro udes t day s , and one of the most significant battles of our time." Leo Cooper, London, 1976, first edition.
160 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), soft cover. ISBN 085052229 Color frontispiece, b&w photographs, maps, 'family tree'. "In the early 1960s a new concept for the organisation of the Infantry was devised - the voluntary formation of Large Regiments. This is the story of the first: the Royal Anglian Regiment, with four regular battalions, formed from the seven county regiments of East Anglia and the East Midlands. These regiments, each with long and highly individual histories and tradition s , m a d e a decision to unite, a step which required goodwill, tolerance, trust and determination to made the union succeed. In some quarters, the Large Regiment concept was a nail in the coffin of the treasured regimental system; to others, i t wa s a m ea ns of retaining the essential features of that system while withstanding the stresses of change in the Army as a whole. The Royal Anglians have had ten years in which to test their experiment, years of futher reductions in the Arm y, of t rai nin g a s a i rpo r table and mechanized infantry, keeping the peace in distant garrisons, as United Nations troops, and above all the years of bullet and bomb in Aden and Ulster. This book describes how the dangers and difficulties o f t hose ye ars have wel ded to geth er a new regiment of modern infantry, highly trained and professional yet still conscious of inherited traditions. Chiefly, it is a picture of the contemporary British infantryman, disciplined and brave in ac tion , pat ient and chee rful in a dve rsity , a new breed in many ways but with all the best qualities of his forefathers and, in a confused world, a figure of hope and reassurance."
