Fought with weapons of a sophistication beyond anything previously displayed in battle, against a ruthless dictator who se invastion of Kuwait had been universally condemned, it was a conflict waged with an unparalleled sense of international common purpose. Under the fierce glare of world media attention, commanders had to be appointed to manage a highly v o l a t i l e s ituation - with hostages shielding Saddam Hussein's military installations, Iraq's breached trade sanctions needing enforcement, the constant threat of chemical warfare and the Coalition's objectives gradually shifting from defence to o ff en ce .. .( T hi s book) is the fascinating, revelatory chronicle of war from the Allied nerve centre, analysing the American's brilliant execution of the air and the land campaigns. WEAPONS FREE. THE STORY OF A GULF WAR HELICOPTER PILOT., Boswell, Richard. Foreword by General Sir Peter de la Billiere.
2 Boswell, Richard. Foreword by General Sir Peter de la Billiere. WEAPONS FREE. THE STORY OF A GULF WAR HELICOPTER PILOT.
Crecy, (Manchester, 1998).
216 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w and color photographs. "In September 1990 Richard Boswell was a newly qualified helicopter pilot in the Royal Navy, fresh out of flight school and flying one of the most potent fighting helicopters in the world - the Westland Lynx. The world was at his feet in every sense. Then, on the day he and his girlfriend decided to buy a house together, Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait. With less than 24 hours notice, Richard Boswell was onboard HMS Manchester and en-route to the Gulf and impending war. Once in the Gulf, HMS Manchester prepared for the seaborne invasion that most thought was inevitalbe. Boswell saw action against Iraqi forces, protecting Allied ships and sinking a number of Iraqi gunboats. After the liberation of Kuwait, he flew extensively around the devastated country, when his duties included a spell as pilot for Sir Peter de la Billiere. But his story does not end there. After returning to the UK , Boswell became an instructor and also indulged his passion for flying home-built aircraft, a passion that led to the accident that nearly killed him and ended his days as a Navy pilot. The portrayal of the battle to rebuilt his shattered life is every bit as graphic as his wartime experiences in the Gulf." Minor wrinkling at top of spine - very light at bottom. THE IRAN-IRAQ WAR AND WESTERN SECURITY 1984-87: STRATEGIC IMPLICATIONS AND POLICY OPTIONS., Cordesman, Anthony H.
4 Cordesman, Anthony H. THE IRAN-IRAQ WAR AND WESTERN SECURITY 1984-87: STRATEGIC IMPLICATIONS AND POLICY OPTIONS.
Jane's, (London, 1987).
185 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "...provides: sophisticated analysis of military strengths and weaknesses of both sides; the latest information on the equipment each side possesses and what use they make of it; detailed examination of major battles and offensives; a thorough, professional study of the economic realities facing both countries given their reduced oil-exporting abilities; lucid insights into both the social and political factors which affect, and may eventually determine, what happens to Saddam Hussein's Ba'ath Party's rule and Ayatollah Khomeini's revolutionary government. The Iran-Iraq War can be viewed at many different levels; as a human tragedy, as a threat to the security of southwest Asia, as a threat to the world's main supply of imported oil, and as the source of new lessons regarding the nature of modern war. All of these issues are addressed in a crisp, informed and professional manner in this timely and important book, by a man who understands military exigencies, strategic realities, the politcs of oil and the growing threat this continuing war presents to the West..." 189 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), soft cover. ISBN 0771029772 "Around the world thoughtful people are asking one vital question: How could an unspeakable terrorist act carried out by a small group of Islamist zealots, most of them Saudi Arabian, result in w ar being declared on Iraq, a country with a brutal but firmly secular government that had no known connection with 9/11? Is it a grotesque mistake, a sinister plot, or just the strategic equivalent of a highway pileup? Far too many politician s a n d journalists who should know better have swallowed the story that Saddam Hussein is a threat to the West, that his weapons of mass destruction are about to fall into the hands of suicidal terrorist fanatics, and that we must invade Iraq bef or e t he B east of Baghdad eats us, hair and all. Toronto Dundurn 2007 1550026968 / 9781550026962 First Edition Soft Cover Very Good+
T.E. LAWRENCE TO HIS BIOGRAPHERS, ROBERT GRAVES AND LIDDELL HART., Lawrence, T.E.
8 Lawrence, T.E. T.E. LAWRENCE TO HIS BIOGRAPHERS, ROBERT GRAVES AND LIDDELL HART.
London Cassell 1963 Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good -
260 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w frontispiece. "Robert Graves and Basil Liddell Hart wrote the only two authorized biographies of T.E. Lawrence during his lifetime. Both knew the man well and at the time of his death on May 11th, 1935, their association with him had grown into understanding based on sympathetic knowledge and respect Yet the two had never met; Lawrence kept his friendships sealed off from one another as far as he was able. While engaged on their biographies, both wrote frequent letters asking him for elucidation of particular events and sent typescripts for his comments and corrections. Liddell Hart met him frequently for informal talks. After Lawrence's death, both made selections from the material in their possession which they thought best illustrated his character and qualities, and in 1939 published them in two companion volumes as a limited edition. Now, twenty-four years later, it is possible to republish these selections in a single volume. (T)hey throw a searching light upon a man who was twice a legend, once in his own lifetime, and now again after his death. Of particular interest is the way Lawrence showed different facets of his chameleon-like character to each of his friends. He said himself that he was more a legion than a man - an oblique reference to the demoniac of Gerasa in the Gospel - and here, placed side by side, is the evidence of two synonymous relationships of remarkably different character. His letters to Liddel Hart are businesslike, graphic, factual: to Graves they are more concerned with self-analysis, but cast a deliberate veil over the inner man, only rarely twitched aside. The total impression is a most persuasive defence against such as Adlington's attempts to explode the Arabian 'legend'. They build up a strong impression of Lawrence's particular talents, his remarkable achievements, his enigmatic personality." Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, tiny tear at bottom of rear hinge, light rubbing, minor soiling.

THE WAR IN THE YEMEN., O'Ballance, Edgard.
9 O'Ballance, Edgard. THE WAR IN THE YEMEN.
Archon, Hamden, Connecticut, 1971, first edition.
218 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0208010386 "....a remarkable account of a bitter war fought in almost medieval conditions in a little-known country. It is also, inevitably, the story of a country forced by the necessities of its own warfare to advance with reckless speed into the twentieth century. Major O'Ballance is the best qualified historian, both from his long familiarity with the Middle East, and from his books on modern warfare and guerrilla fighting which h ave gained him such a wide reputation, to write this account - the only comprehensive one to date - of the Yemen War. He begins with the Yemen in 1948, a land as impenetrable as Tibet to the Western world, where the tyrannical Imam Yahya r e c e i v e d c omplaints from his people on little bits on paper and decorated the wall of his capital with the heads of argumentative subjects; and he ends twenty years later with a Republican government in the same capital, using foreign aid to bu il d ro ad s an d h ospitals, and keeping a precarious status quo with the help of tanks and aeroplanes. In between, we are given a fascinating and almost classic description of the meeting and struggle of two worlds: the world of the Imams who ke pt pe ace by t aki ng ho stages from each of the warring tribes and regarded motor cars with considerable distrust; and the world of the young officers trained abroad who found good military reasons for quoting Khrushchev, Nasser and Mao Tse- Tung in th eir succ ess ful eff orts to unseat a dynasty of kings. And the continuous self-seeking participation of Nasser and Faisal in this conflict, as Major O'Ballance is at pains to stress, highlights more cogently than ever the intricate w eb of sus pici ons and p reju dice s in whic h the nations of the Middle East find themselves struggling to coexist."
