160 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "Why did the airship R101 crash on her voyage to India? How did the great Australian pioneer aviatior, Charles Kingsford-Smith, leave such a trail of death behind him when he disappared in 'Lady Southern Cross' in 1935? How did the pilots of the Fairey Postal Mono-plane in 1929 know that they were going to die? Why did so many of the first women who tried to emulate Lindbergh's solo flight across the Atlantic disappear in mysterious circumstances? What was the jinx that befell Stratocruiser propellers in the 1950s, and was it a coincidence that two Stratocruiser captains met in mid-Atlantic on Christmas Day 1957? What was the strange link between the Comet take-off accidents and the Comets that exploded in mid-air? Many flying mysteries of the past have since been explained by the advance of technology, but many remain, particularly those connected to time, coincidence and precognition of events. None of the aircraft disasters described in this book, which have taken place this century in uncertain and even mysterious circumstances, have ever been fully eplained." Very light browning to pages and edges of text block. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has very minor rubbing, very minor edge wrinkling, tiny scuff on rear flap-fold.

367 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H). "(A) story of five months of hair-raising adventure on the Italian front in which young Otto Prohaska, the hero of 'A Sailor of Austria' and 'The Emperor's Coloured Coat', entrusts his life to the nascent, unreliable, and terrifying Imperial and Royal Austro-Hungarian Flying Service. It is the summer of 1916, and Otto, joined by his self-willed aerial chauffeur Sergeant-Pilot Toth, entrusts his life to a succession of flimsy biplanes in the sky above war-torn Alpine battlefields. On the ground, the rickety Habsburg empire has begun its final slide to disaster. And in the air is the unmistakable sense that history, poignant and ironic and always surprising is erupting all around them. Written with craft, style, and an astonishing breadth of emotion, (this) is the continuation of a remarkable series." In the case of the 37th President of the U n i t e d States of America, Richard Nixon, January 20, 1969 to August 9, 1974, the answer seems clear. Hastings House, New York, 1955.

"A financial disaster prevented (Sir Michael Bruce) from following the family tradition of becoming an officer in the crack Royal Regiment known as 'The Gunners', so he enlisted i n the British South African Police. At seventeen, he shot his first man; at eighteen he hunted a double-murderer across the velds of Rhodesia. By the time he was twenty-four he had fought (and was twice wounded) at ill-fated Gallipoli and o n t h e w estern front through the Great War of 1914-19. Excitement dogged his footsteps as he sailed round the Horn in a windjammer; fought in a Brazilian revolution; crossed the Andes on foot; was nearly killed in a stampede of wild cattle; and w a s th e s ol e survivor of a gold-seeking hunt in the Amazon. Back in England, jobless, he did a stint as a reporter on a gossip 'sheet'; became a stunt actor, then press agent, in the movies; and in 1938, on the continent, established an under gro un d for J ew s f leeing from Hitler's persecution, subsequently himself falling into the hands of the Gestapo. At Dunkirk in World War II, Sir Michael ferried British soldiers across the Channel, then got into the RAF - and into more hair-rai sing in ci dent s.. .." That is why one day he ran so far from home, while following the trail of Old Man Coyote, that he could not find his way back to Farmer Brown's. Fortunately for Bowser, Blacky the Crow was sorry for him and led him to a strange farmhouse where he was petted and fed. But Bowser was not happy. 330 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "With warmth, wry wit, and surprising candour, G. Allan Burton relates the big and small incidents in his life, sometimes with nostalgia, sometimes with bite. His story starts in Toronto's exclusive Rosedale district, where, as a child, he discovered the twin passions of horse-riding and watercolour painting, passions that became the dual themes of his life. The first took him into the Governor General's Horse Guards, into the Allied Forces' dangerous campaign in Italy during World War II, and into a life-long love of fox hunting. The second took him into architecture and interior design and then into Simpsons where he worked his way from stockboy to chairman of the company. Throughout his business career, he kept a journal in which he recorded the critical events of Simpsons growth - the formation of Simpsons-Sears, the opening of new stores, and the innovative development of shopping malls in Ontario and Quebec, the frustrations of economic recession, and finally the explosion of the 'store wars' in 1979 where the Hudson's Bay Company and Sears, Roebuck of Chicago battled for control of this major Canadian company." Very light wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has one tiny tear with crease - archivally taped, a few areas of light edge wrinkling, minor edge wear, very light rubbing.

The present exhibition attempts to give a balanced representation of the entire period. Howerever, a period of over sixty years in the rapidly changing world of the nineteenth century could hardly show anything approaching uniformity of style. 287 pp, 8vo (8" H). "In and around a very English village, murder follows murder, and corpse is piled upon corpse. Fen, whom Crispin fans will remember well, is once again the man who finally sorts out the very intricate puzzle; but for much of the book he is an accessory after the fact, and in a peculiarly gruesome manner. The Rector, the Major, and even old Gobbo, take a hand at playing detective, much to the confusion of Detective-Superintendant Ling. And the lively yarn culminates in a chase to end all chases - involving the local hunt, hunt saboteurs, a herd of rampaging cows, a motor-cycle scramble, a runaway burglar, a team of bloody-minded engineers, the major on horseback, and the police, variously motivated."
