A WARTIME LOG., Beltrone, Art and Beltrone, Lee.
1 Beltrone, Art and Beltrone, Lee. A WARTIME LOG.
Charlottesville, Virginia Howell 1994 0943231906 / 9780943231907 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good Signed by Authors.
208 pp, 9 3/4" H. Signed on front free endpaper: "Art Beltrone / Lee Beltrone". Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour. "With watercolors extracted from food can labels and paint brushes made from their own hair, downed World War II American airmen recreated their recollections of combat and experiences as prisoners of war in blank books provided by the Y.M.C.A. With remarkable ingenuity and creativity, prisoners used their Wartime Logs as a mental escape from the physical confinement of German prison camps. Sketches, illustrations, poetry, diary entries - all were recorded in each prisoner's log book. (This book), printed and bound in roughly the size and format of the originals, features artwork and anecdotes from more than a dozen log books kept by U.S. Army Air Force pilots and crewmen held prisoner in German camps during WWII. Adventure, boredom, laughter, horror, and courage fill these pages. (It) provides a unique look into a chapter of history that should never be forgotten and will inspire us all." Minor lean to spine, slight waviness to top/bottom edges of text block. Dust jacket has some light edge wrinkling, light rubbing on panels, three very small dents on rear hinge.

Among them were a tailor, a teacher and a cabinet-maker. How surprised these ordinary citizens would be to see that their little group has grown into an organization of over 3000 members in all parts of the country, in the United States and overseas. Twenty-two cities from St John's to Victoria have local chapters or 'Centres' of the RASC. Novices and naturalists, amateurs and professional scientists all play important roles in this remarkable success story. General readers will be surprised to find out what amateurs can learn from the sky, at meetings and through the Society's publications. Leaders of other volunteer organizations, educators looking for ways to promote greater appreciation of science, and local historians interested in the role of the Society in the life of their communities will find helpful ideas in this book. And members themselves will be better equipped to make decisions for the future through an appreciation of the development of the Society, its individual Centres and the men and women who have led them." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, two small shallow dents at top edge of rear board. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top rear edge and at bottom of spine, minor rubbing, 2" faint scratch on rear panel.

"(T)he incredible story of an extraordinary group of American artists, designers, and engineering wizards who became America's unsung heroes o f the Second World War....The men of the 23d Headquarters Special Troops were recruited to become phantom warriors in a ghost army to help win the Battle of Europe. They fought in more campaigns, from D-Day to the Rhine River, with more All i e d a r m i es, than any other unit in the European Theater of Operations - yet not even their fellow American soldiers were aware of their presence. After Douglas Fairbanks Jr., USNR, completed a tour of England and its special forces installat io ns , t he H ol ly wood star convinced the Navy brass to train an elite unit that eventually evolved into the only Army force of its kind - a top-secret band of unknown heroes. These elite soldiers counted among their number designer Bill Blass and pa in te r E lls wor th Kelly, and were inspired by Hilton Howell Railey, the 'P.T. Barnum of Deception'. The Special Troops' mission was twofold: to deceive the German army into believing that the Allies possessed more troops and materiel tha n th ey a ctu all y di d an d, e ven more heroically, to draw enemy fire on their position to allow other units to advance free of lethal resistance. Through the art of camouflage, sonic deception, and illusion this extraordinary troops of brave, ingen ious men save d cou ntles s Ame rica n lives - while sometimes losing their own. From the use of inflatable rubber tanks and howitzers to elaborate sound effects, fake radio transmissions, special effects artillery fire, and other elements of stage craft , th ese s hadow soldie rs put thei r lives on the line for their brother soldiers and for their country - only to disappear from history and memory." ONE PILOT'S LOG: THE CAREER OF E.L. "SLONNIE" SLONIGER., Sloniger, Jerrold E.
12 Sloniger, Jerrold E. ONE PILOT'S LOG: THE CAREER OF E.L. "SLONNIE" SLONIGER.
Howell, Charlottesville, VA, 1997, first edition.
192 pp, oblong 8vo (8 3/4" H x 11 1/4" D), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1574270486 B&w photographs. "From the days of landing in open corn fields with the wind at his face to blind insturment landings in a snowstorm, E.L. "Slonnie" Sloniger was behind the controls of an airplane, open cockpit or closed. Slonnie looped the loop over Nebraska, averted bandits to deliver payrolls in Mexico, and served as an aviation ambassador, inaugurating commercial flight in China. As a pursuit pilot , barnstormer, racer, test pilot, acrobatic pilot, and, ultimately, a commercial pilot, Slonnie grew with aviation. Slonnie learned to fly when he entered the heavier-than-air division of the army, because he 'just didn't want to walk', and s e r v e d in the Air Service in WWI. Upon his return to the U.S., Slonnie bought his own plane, a Curtiss JN-4 'Canuck', and became a barnstormer, selling rides in small towns across the Middle Western plains. He flew for early airlines when t h e bi gg es t cu s tomer was the U.S. mail and saw the beginnings of the major lines; Slonnie was the original senior pilot, Number One, for American Airlines and flew for them for twenty years. In his career he accumulated nearly 25,000 flying ho ur s - a nu mbe r mat ch ed by only a handful of his peers. (This) is Slonnie's story as told to his son during the last years of his life. Slonnie's words together with the Sloniger family's extensive photograph collection recall the details of the c aree r of a t ru e av iat ion pioneer, a pilot's pilot, during an exhilarating period in American aviation history."
