That is why one day he ran so far from home, while following the trail of Old Man Coyote, that he could not find his way back to Farmer Brown's. Fortunately for Bowser, Blacky the Crow was sorry for him and led him to a strange farmhouse where he was petted and fed. But Bowser was not happy. 10 Jack, Donald THAT'S ME IN THE MIDDLE. THE ADVENTURES OF BARTHOLOMEW BANDY. VOLUME TWO. (VOL. 2)
Toronto Doubleday Canada 1973 0385049013 / 9780385049016 Book Club (BCE/BOMC) Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good-
300 pp, 8 3/8" H. "Here are the further misadventures of Bartholomew Bandy, World War I Ace extraordinaire introduced in 'Three Cheers for Me'. Bandy is once again lending his peculiar talents to the war effort. Fate has smiled (perhaps leered) on him and he is now a Lt. Colonel and liaison officer in London for the Secretary of State for Air. Most of Bandy's liaisons leave something to be desired. A penniless Bolshevik spy bullies him into buying a gaudy painting by an upstart named Matisse, a buxom widow makes forward advances at him under his fiancee's nose, and he's almost lynched when the Prime Minister, Lloyd George, picks him to make a speech denouncing the British Chief of Staff. Instead he's sent off to the trenches of France - to join a freewheeling bicycle brigade with unorthodox methods of killing Germans and staying in high spirits. Bandy is also subjected to a number of other horrors: an evening in a Dublin pub with a band of Irish rebels, a fox-hunt where, under Bandy's inspired directions, the hounds end up in his host's house, an unforgettable honeymoon in a Scottish castle, and an English country fair that could have been directed by Mack Sennett." Previous owner's embossed stamp mark on free front endpaper, tiny dint on half-title page, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light edge wear, light browning to top and for-edge of text block. "Starting in present-day Holland, Poortvliet observes a nd illustrates, the many animals who inhabit this earth, in great detail. He may catch a rabbit, lynx, or partridge sauntering by, or admire a doe with her young right beneath him. He takes notice of foxes, deer, and wolves, and portrays them r e a l istically and convincingly. (He) continues on his journey to the sixteenth century, a time when humans coexisted with such predators as bears, lynx, and wolves, and other wild animals. His journey ends with the people and animals of the Ic e Ag e, a nd he imagines the now-extinct mammoth and other creatures in their natural habitat - the giant deer, the wooly rhinoceros, the wild horse, the auroch, and the cave lion.
