ZERO TOLLERANCE: AN INTIMATE MEMOIR BY THE MAN WHO REVOLUTIONIZED FIGURE SKATING., Cranston, Toller. With Martha Lowder Kimball.
14 Cranston, Toller. With Martha Lowder Kimball. ZERO TOLLERANCE: AN INTIMATE MEMOIR BY THE MAN WHO REVOLUTIONIZED FIGURE SKATING.
McClelland & Stewart, Toronto, 1997, first edition.
352 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0771023340 B&w photographs. "Toller Cranston is: six-time Canadian figure-skating champion, celebrity, costume designer, artist extraordinaire, broadcaster, choreographer of skating ro utines, raconteur, bon vivant, coach, world traveller, art collector, legend and enigma. In 1976 he won Olympic bronze (so why did it feel like defeat?). This book tells the story of his life after those fateful games at Innsbruck. The r i s e a n d f all of Toller's first professional ice show is described in soul-searing detail. His subsequent triumphant tour of Europe as the Skater of the Century is recounted, in contrast, with wicked humour. There are vignettes here of his e nc ou nt e rs w it h t he rich and famous from Leonard Bernstein to Pierre Cardin and of his life among Europe's aristocrats and bohemians. Toller has experienced the high life and the low. He has stayed in the most luxurious hotels, held court in pal ati al ho use s, so ugh t seclusion in beautiful estates. But the hard times took their toll. In the early 1990s a combination of circumstances, including a disatrous professional association with out-of-control American skater Christopher Bo wman and a laws uit tha t d ragg ed on for years (ending in complete victory for Toller), led to a personal crisis from which recovery came slowly. But even in the blackest hours, Toller's humour and creative powers never deserted him....an e xtra ordin ary s elf -port rait wri tten by a uniquely gifted individual. Toller's wit, insight, and delicious way with words will entertain and astound readers whether they are skating fans or not." Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling. Near Fine/N ear Fi ne

Burlington, Ontario North Shore 2003 189689920X / 9781896899206 First Edition Soft Cover Near Fine Signed by Author
104 pp, oblong 8vo (8" H x 10 1/2" D). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. Signed by author on title page. "There is a lot of nostalgia within these pages. The photographs show a different sort of community as it has evolved over the years. There is a series of photographs taken on Colborne Street - better known today as Lakeshore Road - showing retail establishments long gone as well as other shots of historic houses, the harbors in transition, and Rebecca Street of long, long ago. A series of aerial photographs, some dating back more than 40 years, provide a different glimpse of Oakville, offering a unique perspective of the downtown core. Then marvel at the old schools, the Middle Road and the bustling community of Palermo, and even an antique car display at the Ford plant. As you leaf through these pages, an Oakville of another era will come alive, one rich in tradition, one as seen through the eyes of photographers." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very minor edge wear.

18 Firth, Edith G. TORONTO IN ART: 150 YEARS THROUGH ARTISTS' EYES.
Toronto Fitzhenry & Whiteside / City of Toronto 1983 0889027129 / 9780889027121 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
199 pp, 11 1/4" H. (B)rings together reproductions of over 170 paintings, drawings, watercolours and prints, in which 130 individual artists have interpreted aspects of the city of Toronto, from its incorporation in 1834 right up to the present day. Although organized in five chronological sections, it is not simply an illustrated history of the city. Rather it is a gallery of pictures accompanied by explanatory texts. Special emphasis has been given to new and unfamiliar material, and over 100 of the pictures in the book have never been reproduced before. Care has also been taken to reflect the ethnic, religious, social and cultural diversity of the city. The big names are here, among them such figures as Paul Kane, Sanford Fleming and Robert Harris from the Victorian period, several members of the Group of Seven, and more recent masters such as Jack Bush and David Milne. But here also are a host of less famous artists: some city residents, some passing visitors, some anonymous, some amateurs whose enthusiasm was greater than their talent. All, however, in their own ways, have made a vital contribution to our record of Toronto as it was and is." Minor scuff on bottom edge of front board, book slightly curved. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, very light edge wrinkling, three small edge tears archivally taped, slight waviness to back panel.

19 Freeman, John and Dormer, Peter. LONDON REVEALED. THE BEAUTIFUL, BIZARRE AND UNEXPECTED INTERIORS OF THE CAPITAL.
Macdonald, London, 1989, first edition.
240 pp, small 4to (10 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Beautifully and profusely illustrated with colour photographs. ISBN 0356175375 "John Freeman has spent a year investigating the worlds behind the closed doors of the Capital, unearthing an incredible variety of important interiors. The best and most exciting of these have been brought together in this book, revealing ninety unique views of London, many of which have been photographed here for the first time. The result is the mo s t authoritative and well-researched book on the hidden and unappreciated interiors of London, coveirng not only buildings from all periods of history but sites that represent many of the aspects of London life. Five thematic chapters put each in di vi d ual interior into context, making the book not only a stunning visual and descriptive account of the multifarious worlds inside London, but an important survey of London's architecture and design. The chapters include 'The Grand Scale', a s tud y o f the most opulent and grand interiors, with unusual angles on the well-known - such as the Albert Hall and Old Bailey - as well as impressive but less accessible sites such as the Granada Cinema at Tooting. 'Into the Twentieth Century' rev eals the i nnovative decors - successful or otherwise - of recent years; 'The Decorative Tradition' celebrates the richness of period and contemporary detailing in London; 'Moments Preserved' evokes not only nostalgia but wonders at the perfect pr eserv ation or restoration of a period room or moment in time (with a plea therefore for their further protection). 'Private Lives' explores the personal homes that have been transformed in traditional and eclectic styles by their owners, and als o prov ides g limp ses into private habitats, from the hallowed halls of the Reform Club to a Chelsea houseboat and even a 'taxi driver' eatery." This is a heavy volume which will require additional postage. Minor wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has min or wr inkling at top of spine and rear flap-fold, very minor rubbing.
