5 Barris, Ted. BEHIND THE GLORY.
Toronto Macmillan Canada 1992 0771591764 / 9780771591761 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good
358 pp, 9 1/4" H. Map endpapers, "When war broke out in September 1939, the Allied air forces had few combat aircraft and even fewer military pilots ready to fight. It was clear that air superiority would determine the outcome of the war, so in December 1939, Britain, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada created the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. Most of the air crew training took place in Canada. The success of the plan depended on its instructors. At the beginning of the war bush pilots, barnstormers, commercial pilots, crop-dusters, amateur aviators, and First World War veterans were called up to begin the huge task of training. Most of their students went to the front, but some were kept in Canada to instruct the next generation of recruits. At its peak, the plan administered 107 schools and 184 other units at 231 sites across Canada, operated 11,000 aircraft, and employed 104,000 men and women. The BCATP trained 200,000 air crew in less than five years. FDR and Winston Churchill called their work 'the decisive factor' in the war." Book is Near Fine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, two corner creases on front flap.

Toronto Ryerson Press 1959 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good- Good-
204 pp, 8 5/8" H. B&w photographs. "Urged many times to write the story of his life, Mr. Robert Campbell, now in his eighty-eighth year, finally acceded to the request. The result is this very readable book of reminiscence, rich in humour and history, adventure and anecdote, told by a master storyteller. In a breezy and colloquial style the author tells of his experiences in and around Banff, of his political life, experiences in the army during World War I, and his encounters with important visitors in the Canadian Rockies. This is not only a fascinating story, but a valuable record of early days when the Rockies were just beginning to attract attention as a tourist centre for the world." Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, creases at top of rear panel, several edge tears archivally taped, light rubbing/soiling.

"(C)hronicles the significant aeronautical events which took place in the Cumbria, Dumfries and Galloway region from 1825 to 1914. The uninformed reader glancing at the topographical map may wonder as to what possible level of pioneering aviation activity could be sustained in a predominantly mountainous region where man is grossly outnumbered by sheep - yet between these years it was to encapsulate almost all aspects of man's aeronautical endeavour, from ballooning, parachuting, gliding, aircraft and airship construction to aero engine production. Cumbria is the birthplace of both British naval and civil marine aviation and for the first time the full exciting story is told aided by many previously unpublished documents and photographs." Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Western Producer Prairie Books 1982 0888330901 / 9780888330901 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
177 pp, 11 1/4" H. "Saskatoon began as a vision of the Temperance Colonization Society. Its members formulated a scheme for a colony in the West where a way of life free from the evils of alcohol might be fostered. Early in the spring of 1882, an advance party travelled by rail and wagon to examine their grant of land and to choose the administrative site for the settlement. By the beginning of the twentieth century, the temperance ideals had become secondary to boosterism. By 1905 discussions were underway to amalgamate the original Nutana settlement with 'Saskatoon' and Riversdale on the west side of the river. Their combined population of 4,500 allowed Saskatoon a charter under city status in 1906. By 1908 the city was served by three railway companies and the 'Hub City' station was one of the busiest in the West. (This book) brings the story of the city to life through nearly 300 photographs. It registers changes through two world wars, during the periods of prosperity and recession, into the optimism of the fifties and sixties and the more speculative expansion of the seventies." Christmas gift inscription in ink on front free endpaper, book is lightly cocked, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor glue residue at top edge of rear endpapers. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear - mainly at top/bottom of spine ans flap-folds, light rubbing including faint scratches, 2" edge tear with old tape on inside, two tiny edge tears.

19 Donegan, Rosemary. Introduction by Rick Salutin. SPADINA AVENUE
Vancouver Douglas & McIntyre 1985 0888944721 / 9780888944726 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
192 pp, 11 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "Spadina has been the starting point for wave after wave of new Canadian immigrants. Once the main focus for Jewish culture and life in Toronto, the street became a centre of commerce and saw intense political activity during the thirties and forties. Now the Jewish garment factories overlook bustling Chinese sidewalk markets. Greek cafes jostle with delicatessens and Szechuan restaurants. Contemporary art and music thrive amidst this colourful ethnic diversity. Studios and alternative galleries crowd abandoned warehouse space above street level, and all along the street, such classic watering holes as Grossman's, the El Macombo, the Paramount and the Silver Dollar dispense entertainment for tastes that run from black and new wave music to strippers. (This book) presents a collection of photographs and related texts ranging from the years when the street was a tree-lined boulevard, right through to today, when the Queen Street art scene and a rapidly expanding Chinatown are transforming Spadina. Drawing on his own Jewish roots and family history, Rick Salutin provides a very personal introduction that demonstrates how and why Spadina is unique, why it has become so important to those whose lives it has intersected. Organized to reflect and even recreate the Spadina experience, (it) takes the reader up the street starting at the lakeshore and ending at Bloor Street." Very tiny bump at top corner of both boards, small slight bump at top of rear hinge. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of spine and flap-folds.

DESPERATE SIEGE: THE BATTLE OF HONG KONG., Ferguson, Ted.
20 Ferguson, Ted. DESPERATE SIEGE: THE BATTLE OF HONG KONG.
Toronto Doubleday Canada 1980 0385146949 / 9780385146944 Hard Cover Very Good Good
252 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w photographs, maps. "On Christmas Day 1941, Hong Kong, 'the Gibraltar of the Orient', crumbled under the massive onslaught of crack Japanese invasion troops. The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the Royal Rifles of Canada, ill equipped and unblooded, fought side by side with four other British Commonwealth units to defend the Crown colony. For eighteen days, the heavily outnumbered soldiers surpassed all expectations, winning lasting honour on the battlefield before being marched off to spend four and a half years in Japanese prison camps. They had endured constant air strikes, artillery barrages, vicious assaults, and hand-to-hand combat. Their heroic sacrifice is made all the more tragic when one realizes that, from the start, they were considered expendable. Base on interviews with survivors of the battle and the POW cages, (this) is a powerful tale of human courage in the face of impossible odds." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has light to moderate edge wear at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, several small tears archivally taped, light water marks on lower inside of flap-folds, light fading to spine colour.
