3 Atkin, Ronald. DIEPPE 1942: THE JUBILEE DISASTER.
Macmillan, London, 1980, first edition.
306 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0333191870 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "At dawn on 19 August 1942, five thousand Allied soldiers landed at the French port of Dieppe in the first major test of the defence of the G erman-held coastline of Europe since Dunkirk. The codename given to the operation was 'Jubilee' and its aim was to capture Dieppe and the headlands which dominate the town, hold them for a few hours and provide the Allied war planners with t h e v i t a l information they needed about enemy preparedness for the Second Front demanded by the Russians to relieve their sorely-pressed armies in the East. In nine hours of carnage and horror 'Jubilee' became a disaster. A combination of ove r- ri g id p la nn ing, inadequate supporting firepower and - in the final hours before the raid - sheer bad luck, inflicted on the Allies one of their worst defeats in a war which was already going badly. British Commandos carried out the flank a tta cks a gai nst co ast al gun batteries which dominated the seaward approaches to Dieppe and one of these raids, led by Lord Lovat, was spectacularly successful. But the assault on the port itself and the beaches on either side of Dieppe, the t ask of t he Cana dian 2nd Div ision, was a disastrous and bloody failure....Ronald Atkin has pieced together the full story of that day at Dieppe from all sides - British, Canadian, German and French - and from sources which include official docu ment s and re ports and most graph ic of all, the reminiscences of the men of both sides who planned and fought in Operation 'Jubilee'. The result is a masterly account of one of the most extraordinary - and tragic - episodes of the Second World War." 6 Bergstein, Rachelle. WOMEN FROM THE ANKLE DOWN: THE STORY OF SHOES AND HOW THEY DEFINE US.

284 pp, 9 1/4" H. Small b&w illustrations. "What is it about a pair of shoes that so enchants women of all ages, demographics, political affiliations, and style tribes? Part social history, part fashion record, part pop-culture celebration, (this book) seeks to answer that question as it unfolds the story of shoes in the twentieth century. The tale begins in the rural village of Bonito, Italy, with a visionary young shoe-maker named Salvatore Ferragamo and ends in New York City with a fictional socialite and trend-setter named Carrie Bradshaw. Along the way it stops in Hollywood, where Judy Garland first slipped on her ruby slippers; New Jersey, where Nancy Sinatra heard something special in a song about boots; and the streets of Manhattan, where a transit-worker strike propelled women to step into cutting-edge athletic shoes. Beginnng with the well-heeled suffragettes in the 1910s, women have fought for greater freedom and mobility, a struggle that exploded in the 1960s with the women's liberation move-ment and culminated in the new millenium with our devotion to personal choice. Featuring interviews with designers, historians, and cultural experts, and a cast of real-life characters, from Marilyn Monroe to Jane Fonda, from Gwen Stefani to Manolo Blahnik, (it) is a lively, compelling look at the evolution of modern woman and the fashion that reflects - and has shaped - their lives." His father was sent home; Harold Pringle found himself in Italy, fighting on the bloody 'Hitler Line'. Shellshocked, this broken soldier embarked on a tragic, final course: desertion, debauchery in the streets of Rome and a suspect accusation of murder. His appeal was reviewed by the highest levels of government, right up to Prime Minister King. But two months after the official end of the war, Private Pringle was put to death - the only soldier the Canadians had executed since the First World War. His own countrymen carried out the orders, forbidden to go home before completing this last grotesque assignment. The Pringle file was closed and stayed that way for fifty years - until Andrew Clark uncovered it and began a two-year investigative search. (This) is a true-life military detective story that shows another side of what many consider our proudest military campaign. 464 pp, 9 1/2" H. "Quicksilver is part romance, part psychologicl thriller. Richly evocative and subtly erotic, it gives a fascinating insight into the myth of the werewolf. Raised in exile as an English gentleman trying to forget a tragic past, Ned Malise wanted only to be left alone with his music, his rich daydreams and his love for Marika. But at the age of thirty-three, he suddenly began to turn into a wolf. Or so it seemed in 1638, when werewolves were still tried and hanged like witches. On the run from hunters with dogs, Ned takes refuge with the woman he has loved from a distance all his life, who must herself in turn make a terrifying decision. Then Ned finds that rescue can be even more horrifying than execution. Set in England and Holland, in a world where medieval superstition still warred with the emerging experimental sciences of the Age of Reason, (it) moves from court intrigue to back-street quacks, from the healing power of music to the deadly hunger of intellectual ambition. From the horror of Ned's first unravelling by his Wolf, by way of one of the strangest yet most satisfying love stories seen outside myth, it propels the reader to an astonishing but exhilarating end - (and) stretches our understanding of the beast that lurks in man." Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling.

THE PITY OF WAR. EXPLAINING WORLD WAR I., Ferguson, Niall.
16 Ferguson, Niall. THE PITY OF WAR. EXPLAINING WORLD WAR I.
Basic Books, New York, 1999, book club edition.
563 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, tables, graphs. "More than four million Americans were mobilized in 1917-18, of whom more than 100,000 were killed - double the number who died in Vietnam. This was the fir st, bloody step on the road to globalism which would characterize our foreign policy for the rest of the twentieth century. Even American literature was transformed by the impact of the war on writers like Hemingway and Fitzgerald. Internat i o n a l l y , more than any other event, the First World War made the twentieth century what it was: It toppled the four great empires of the Old World and left a fifth - the British - mortgaged to the hilt. More than nine million men lost their li ve s, y et n on e of its stated objectives were met. Rather, it spawned seven decades of Communist rule in Russia, the rise of Adolf Hitler's Third Reich, and the horror of the Holocaust. Now, as the century draws to a close, the time is righ t f or a r adi cal re ass essment of the 'Great War'. In (this book, the author) explodes the myths of 1914-18. He argues that the fatal conflict between Britain and Germany was far from inevitable. It was Britain's declaration of war that needl essl y t urne d a cont inen tal conflict into a world war, and it was Britain's economic mismanagement and military inferiority that necessitated American involvement, forever altering the global balance of power. Ferguson vividly brings back to li fe on e of the semi nal c atast roph es of the century, not through a dry citation of chronological chapter and verse, but through a series of brilliant chapters that answer the key questions: Why did the war start? Why did it continue? And why did it st op? How d id th e Germ ans ma nage to kill more soldiers than they lost but still end up defeated in November 1918? Above all, why did men fight?" THE BIG PUSH: A PORTRAIT OF THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME., Gardner, Brian.
18 Gardner, Brian. THE BIG PUSH: A PORTRAIT OF THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME.
Cassell, London, 1961, first edition.
177 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, maps. "At half past seven on the morning of the first of July 1916, along a front extending for eighteen miles in the valley of the Somme, an intensive bombardment which had conti nued since dawn lifted, and fourteen divisions of British troops stumbled out of their trenches to attack the enemy. This was the climax of Sir Douglas Haig's carefully conceived plan to break the interminable deadlock of trench warfare on th e W e s t ern Front, and score a resounding and dramatic victory over the German forces. Haig's design foundered within a few hours among the defences of Fricourt, La Boisells, and Thiepval, at the appalling cost of twenty thousand British soldier s k il le d an d thirty-five thousand wounded. - But the official dates for The Battle of the Somme are from 1st July to 18th, November 1916. The 'Big Push' went on, the preliminary bombardments, the attacks, the horrifying slaughter - every single c as ual ty be ing measured in terms of individual pain, misery, and sacrifice. Belief in the High Command that prolonged shelling must reduce an entrenched enemy to inertia and impotence, easy prey for advancing infantry, died hard. It persiste d t hro ugho ut the aut umn and into the following year, when the same ghastly pattern was repeated at Passchendaele. It was not fully discredited till the full potential of armoured vehicles was realized and military concepts, bred in minor theat res of w ar be for e th e tur n of the century, were rejected. - (This book) provides a critical, and immensely readable analysis of the policy, planning, and action of the British and French armies at the Battle of the Somme, a battle in which the cas ualti es of the Briti sh arm y alone exceeded those suffered by it during the whole of the Second World War. An important historical account of a great military blunder, it is also a vivid portrait of the tragedy, the unspeakable horror, and t he co urage, which are commo n to an y war at any time, but which were peculiarly intensified in France and Flanders from 1914 to 1918." Toronto McClelland & Stewart 2006 0771035470 / 9780771035470 First Canadian Edition. Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
332 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, maps. "(O)n 1 July 1916, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 733 of 801 men in the 1st Newfoundland Regiment were killed. From their starting position in a British support trench, the Newfoundlanders had to cross some 230 metres of fire-swept ground before they reached their own front line. In less than a half-hour, it was all over. The divisional commander wrote of the Newfoundland effort: 'It was a magnificent display of trained and disciplined valour, and its assault failed of success because dead men can advance no further.' Well might the Germans refer to the Battle of the Somme as das Blutbad - the bloodbath. From 1 July to 15 November 1916, a period of just 138 days, more than 310,000 soldiers from four great armies, the British, Canadian, French, and German, were killed. The German death toll on the Somme was larger than that of all the Allied forces combined. The heroism of the Dominion troops moved British prime minister David Lloyd George to write: 'The Canadians played a part of such distinction that thenceforth they were marked as storm troops. Coming into the line, they prepared for the worst.' After four and a half months of fighting, the Allied armies had not reached the line they set for themselves for the first day of battle. In this vivid, deeply researched account of one of history's most destructive battles, (the author) tracks (it) through the experiences of footsoldiers, generals, and everyone in between. Interwoven with photographs, journal entries, original maps, and documents from every stage and level of planning, (this book) is the most authoritative and affecting account of this bloody turning point in the Great War."
