THE COMMANDOS AT DIEPPE: REHEARSAL FOR D-DAY. OPERATION CAULDRON, NO 4 COMMANDO ATTACK ON THE HESS BATTERY, AUGUST 19TH, 1942., Fowler, Will.
3 Fowler, Will. THE COMMANDOS AT DIEPPE: REHEARSAL FOR D-DAY. OPERATION CAULDRON, NO 4 COMMANDO ATTACK ON THE HESS BATTERY, AUGUST 19TH, 1942.
London Collins 2002 0007111258 / 9780007111251 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
256 pp, large 8vo, (9 3/8" H). B&w maps, photographs. "History's overriding view of the Dieppe raid in 1942 is that of a catastrophic disaster, with thousands of Canadian and British troops killed or captured. Often overlooked is No 4 Commando's successful supporting element of the raid to disable the heavy German guns that threatened the supporting ships at sea. No 4 Commando's training and preparation for their part in the raid was an excellent example of operational planning, its leadership was superb and its luck held. Quite apart from this first use of Commando's, this raid was also the first instance in which US troops fired shots at their European enemy in WWII. Will Fowler has been able to interview surviving members of No 4 Commando, and with extensive research of official records has pieced together a terrific blow by blow account of one of the most daring early Commando raids of the Second World War." Light wrinkling at top of spine, remainder mark on bottom of textblock, two tiny soiling specks on fore-edge of textblock, very light browning to edges of textblock. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of spine and flap-folds, minor remainder mark at bottom edge of panels/flaps.

From the dust jacket of 'The Bombay Marines': "Newly returned from a successful assignment to rid the Arabian Se a of pirates, Captain Adam Horne of the frigate 'Eclipse' is summoned to the presence of his commading officer, Commodore Watson, head of the East India Company's private fighting unit, the much derided Bombay Marines. It is 1761, and Pond i c h e r r y , last stronghold of the French in the Indian subcontinent, has just fallen to the British. Now Captain Horne is given a strange and secret mission: to capture the defeated French commander Thomas Lally, from his prison at Fort St. G eo rg e in M ad ra s - or the unit will be disbanded for failure. Due to the deployment of most of the Marines on the east coast of India, Horne's force is seriously undermanned. He is left with only one choice: to take his pick of the motley co lle cti on of th iev es, r ap ists and murderers held in the prisons of Bombay Castle and subject them to intensive training for the most closely guarded campaign of the Seven Years' War. Drawing on a wealth of historical characters and events, and on l itt le-s tudi ed d ocum ent s o f the East India Company's early history, the action moves from sea to land, from the colourful waterfront of Bombay to the sadistic penal colony of Bull Island and the final, cataclysmic denouement within th e wa lls o f Fo rt St . Geo rge. In C apta in A dam Horne Porter Hill has created a character as vivid as Hornblower and Ramage, a man who has rejected the prestige of service in the Royal Navy or the East India Company's Maritime Service for the d ashin g, dar e-dev il lif e of h istor y's fi rst c omman do-style unit, operating amid the exotic dangers of Britain's most coveted oriental territories...." 331 pp, square large 8vo (9 1/4" H x 9 1/4" D). B&w and colour illustrations. "Osgoode Hall is a national monument and one of Canada's architectural treasures. Of the many public buildings erected in pre-Confederation Canada, it best encapsulates the diverse stylistic forces that shaped public buildings of its era. The gated lawns, the grandly Venetian rotunda, the ornate courtroom, the portrait-lined walls, and the stained-glass windows evoke a venerable dignity to which few Canadian institutions can aspire. It has been the seat of the Law Society of Upper Canada since 1832 and of several of the Superior Courts of the province for almost as long. It has become a symbol of the legal tradition, not only in Ontario, but throughout Canada and beyond." Small gift notation on verso of free front endpaper. Copp, Clark 1972 Soft Cover Good+
728 pp, 8 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "How did people live through the Depression of the 1930s? (T)he Depression irrevocably altered the attitudes of those who endured it, and consequently has subtly shaped the life styles of their children. This fascinating collection contains accounts from various classes - farmers, fishermen, industrial and extractive workers, white collar workers, members of the professions, independent proprietors, rentiers, managers - and those who belonged only to the vast mass of unemployed. Personal histories are nicely balanced by comments from academic writers, from journalists, social workers, policemen, the clergy, and from politicians and others who offered a bewildering selection of 'cures'. The final section of the book presents the reminiscences of several well-known Canadians." Interior - light toning to pages, otherwise clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. MORRICE: A GREAT CANADIAN ARTIST REDISCOVERED., Laing, G. Blair. Introduction by Jean Sutherland Boggs.
14 Laing, G. Blair. Introduction by Jean Sutherland Boggs. MORRICE: A GREAT CANADIAN ARTIST REDISCOVERED.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1984 0771045689 / 9780771045684 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good James Wilson Morrice.
224 pp, 11 3/4" H. Profusely illustrated with colour reproductions. "James Wilson Morrice is one of the twentieth century's most talented and lyrical painters. Whether depicting a Quebec village in winter, a Paris cafe, or a North African market place, Morrice's vibrant colours and perfectly balanced compositions capture his subjects in a suspended timelessness. The story of (his) life is no less colourful than his paintings. The young James's passion for art took him in 1890, at the age of twenty-five, from his wealthy Montreal background to Paris. It was here, among other artists such as Matisse, and writers such as Somerset Maugham and Arnold Bennett, that he felt a true kinship. And it was not long before Morrice's paintings were seen in the great Salons of Paris, and sent to the Montreal Art Association and the Canadian Art Club in Toronto for exhibition. Laing's fascinating account reveals the complexity of Morrice's genius and gives a definitive picture of James Wilson Morrice - the man, the artist, and his work." Slight waviness at top/bottom edges of text block. Dust jacket has light toning on spine, flap-folds and some edges; one small edge tear archivally taped; minor edge wrinkling.

478 pp, 10" H. Pictorial endpapers, b&w photographs, reproductions. "(T)he story of the Royal Bank, told not only in terms of executive personalities and corporate strategies, but also through an exploration of its corporate culture - of the lives of the people of the Royal - and of the part this corporate culture played in the opening of the country and the expansion of international trade. Throughout are vignettes that focus on some diverting details in the life of the Royal Bank. How many, for instance, know that Henry Mullins, the manager of the Mariposa branch of the Exchange Bank in Stephen Leacock's 'Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town', was based on a real-life Royal Banker, George Rapley, of the Orillia, Ontario branch? Or that, in an effort to foil robbers, tellers were often expected to sleep on the bank premises (sometimes in front of the vault) with loaded revolvers under their pillows? Eminently readable as well as informative (this book) fills an important gap in Canadian business history." Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly top edge small scratch on both panels, tiny dent on front panel.
