It may be anywhere you choose in the English countryside, because ' BB' has drawn a living picture of that sort of delightful old house among fields and woods, the ideal English home which thousands remember from their childhood or hope to have in that future for which they work and plan. The letters are w r i t t e n b y a countryman to a younger friend abroad and they describe the routine of country life throughout the months of the year as it engages an active man with a contemplative mind. They recount the discovery of the small signs of spri ng , th e de li gh t s of summer and long days spent in the open air, and the white beauty of the winter which the townsman hardly knows. Here then is a tranquil book designed for casual reading, calling up the very sights, sounds and smells of th e E ng lis h cou ntr ysi de . 254 pp, 6 7/8" H. "World War III left America a toxic wasteland, its proud civilization buried in the poison ruins of nuclear attack. Its spirit all but destroyed, the small tribes of desperate nomads crushed by Soviet conquerors and their troops had little hope for freedom. Until one man dared to challenge the terrible Russian war machine: John Thomas Rourke, ex-CIA Covert Operations Officer, weapons expert and warrior, the ultimate Survivalist. After his brilliant attack on the combined forces of the Soviet and Fascist armies outside of Eden, Rourke and the rebels retreated to relative safety in the lush Rift Valley. Or so they thought. Ruthless mercenaries known as Land Pirates attached them deploying their huge mobile arsenals of mega-particle beam anti-personnel weapons in a bloody surprise raid. Forced to run, Rourke and his troops were surrounded on all sides by hostile armies. The cause of America's freedom seemed doomed forever. But out of the flames of bitter defeat, democracy's greatest warrior ralled to snatch his most decisive victory!" 6 Barthorp, Michael. CRATER TO THE CREGGAN: A HISTORY OF THE ROYAL ANGLIAN REGIMENT 1964-1974.
Leo Cooper, London, 1976, first edition.
160 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), soft cover. ISBN 085052229 Color frontispiece, b&w photographs, maps, 'family tree'. "In the early 1960s a new concept for the organisation of the Infantry was devised - the voluntary formation of Large Regiments. This is the story of the first: the Royal Anglian Regiment, with four regular battalions, formed from the seven county regiments of East Anglia and the East Midlands. These regiments, each with long and highly individual histories and tradition s , m a d e a decision to unite, a step which required goodwill, tolerance, trust and determination to made the union succeed. In some quarters, the Large Regiment concept was a nail in the coffin of the treasured regimental system; to others, i t wa s a m ea ns of retaining the essential features of that system while withstanding the stresses of change in the Army as a whole. The Royal Anglians have had ten years in which to test their experiment, years of futher reductions in the Arm y, of t rai nin g a s a i rpo r table and mechanized infantry, keeping the peace in distant garrisons, as United Nations troops, and above all the years of bullet and bomb in Aden and Ulster. This book describes how the dangers and difficulties o f t hose ye ars have wel ded to geth er a new regiment of modern infantry, highly trained and professional yet still conscious of inherited traditions. Chiefly, it is a picture of the contemporary British infantryman, disciplined and brave in ac tion , pat ient and chee rful in a dve rsity , a new breed in many ways but with all the best qualities of his forefathers and, in a confused world, a figure of hope and reassurance." Very faint cigarette odor, small soft bump to top corner of p ages, light wear at t op of front hing e/sp ine, l ight rubbing, fore-edge of front cover is lightly faded, minor soiling to bottom of textblock, very light browning to edges of textblock, tiny speck on top of textblock, very faint crease and s light fading on spi ne. Using his own memoirs and other contemporary sources, Miss Beattie has given us an authentic and exciting picture of this arresting figure in Canadian life, whose early years provided Harriet Beecher Stowe with material for her character of Uncle Tom. Dundurn, Toronto, 2006, first edition.
205 pp, 9" H, soft cover. ISBN 1550026283 "If humanity has learned anything from the horrors of the past century, it is that our one hope is democracy. The goals of Canada's actions at home and abroad should be the preservation of democracy. Thi s is the lens through which our policies should be discerned, dissected and amended. (The author) argues that Canada has pursued an ethically and categorically incorrect war against terror. We have been needlessly dovish abroad and excessive l y h a w kish at home. In order to use military force abroad, the government fussed over the need for United Nations approval. At home, however, there are no such restraints; without even asking a court, the government may effectively deprive ce rt ai n p eo pl e of the right to make a living. As (he) summarizes: 'Internationally, key fallacies stem from an undue respect for a rule of law that does not exist. Domestically, key fallacies stem from an undue neglect of a rule of law that do es exi st ." In ter ior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - clean and bright. Fine

Military and press photographers, propagandists, camera-wielding soldiers and civilians - all took the opportunity to record the tumultuous events of 1939-45. Every major theatre of conflict is covered, from the icy seas of the Arctic C i r c l e to the jungles of the South Pacific, from the deserts of North Africa to the steppes of Russia. "Landover was a genuine magic kingdom, with fairy folk and wizardry, just as the advertisement had promised. But after he purchased it, Ben Holiday (former Chicago lawyer) learned that there were a few details the ad had failed to mention. The kingdom was a ruin. The Barons refused to recognize a king, and the peasants were without hope. A dragon was laying waste the countryside, while an evil witch plotted to destroy everything. Ben's only followers were the incompetent Court Magician; Abernathy, the talking dog who served as Court Scribe; and the lovely Willow - but she had a habit of putting down roots in the moonlight and turning into a tree. The Paladin, legendary champion of the Kings of Landover, seemed to be only a myth and an empty suit of armor - ." "On July 3, 1942, RCAF Bomber Pilot Kingsley Brown was shot down over Holland, and shortly afterwards incarcerated in Stalag Luft 3. He spent the next three years t here. University of Florida, Gainesville, 1975.
152 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0813003520 Map endpapers, b&w illustrations. "Until the Second Seminole War the United States Navy had generally employed the Federalist doctrine (cruiser-commerce-raiding), but the un iqueness of this Indian conflict caused the navy to adopt a new offensive strategy. For the first time in history the American Navy was pitted against a nonmaritime foe. There were no single merchantmen to attack; there were no cruisers t o e n g a g e in single-ship combat; there were no enemy fleets to be repelled from the nation's harbors. Instead, there were Indians practicing guerilla tactics in a watery environment - the Everglades of Florida. Athough it was not apparent at t h e be gi nn in g o f the war, the navy's only hope for victory lay in the development of a strategy for riverine warfare. It was a kind of warfare that demanded specially trained combat groups, organized for sustained land/sea operations. I t r equ ir ed jo int ac tio n wi th the army. It called for a naval command familiar with setting up and directing complex operations and diverse forces to achieve an overall objective. In developing a strategy of riverine warfare, United States Nav y po lic y e volv ed f rom a de fe nsi ve to an offensive position, from a society of highly individualistic and inflexible sea captains into a well-meshed cooperative unit capable of working not only alone but also with the army. Between 1835 and 1842, the nav y cam e of age. Her e i s a dramatic account of that vital time, enhanced by an awesome setting, which will engage and enlighten both the scholar of naval history and the armchair sailor." 359 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "There was a time when massive flocks of Passenger Pigeons blotted out the sun, and bright green Carolina Parakeets were so numerous that they looked, according to an early American pioneer, 'like an atmosphere of gems.' But these birds - as well as the Labrador Duck, the Ivory-billed Woodpecker, the Heath Hen, and the Great Auk - now live only as tantalizing but hazy legends. Driven by a desire to understand how and why this came to be, (the author) embarked on ten years of extraordinary detective work. Traveling from Bird Rock in the Gulf of St. Lawrence to Louisiana's tangled bayous in search of those who stalked these birds and those who tried to save them, he discovered strange stories and glorious quests, tales of scientific heroism and political stupidity, of inconceivable apathy and equally astonishing personal devotion. A compelling blend of science, history, politics, and memoir, (this) is a richly detailed and ultimately uplifting narrative of dedication, discovery, and wonder." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkle at top of rear panel.

20 Collard, Elizabeth. THE POTTERS' VIEW OF CANADA: CANADIAN SCENES ON NINETEENTH-CENTURY EARTHENWARE.
Kingston McGill-Queen's University Press 1983 0773504214 / 9780773504219 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
194 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4" H). B&w photographs, reproductions, marks. "This is the first book to be devoted exclusively to potters' views of Canada. The potters' views of Canada have a many-sided appeal, linking the world of artists, printmakers, and photographers to the ceramics industry. Covering the period from the beginning of the nineteenth century to the end of Queen Victoria's reign, this volume focuses chiefly on wares made for the dinner table or the washstand. All are earthenware, decorated by transfer printing, and produced by British potters. The scenes they depict range from the awesome falls at Niagara to early steamboats on the St Lawrence, from igloos in the Arctic to a governor's residence in New Brunswick. Elizabeth Collard traces the evolution of these wares, placing them in their historical setting and identifying the sources from which many of the views were derived. She also provides much detail on the English and Scottish potters and on the artists whose work they adapted to their own use." Very minor edge wear at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light rubbing to glossy surface.
