A LITERARY & HISTORICAL ATLAS OF ASIA. EVERYMAN'S LIBRARY NO. 633., Bartholomew, J.G.
2 Bartholomew, J.G. A LITERARY & HISTORICAL ATLAS OF ASIA. EVERYMAN'S LIBRARY NO. 633.
London J.M. Dent & Sons Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
226 pp, 6 7/8" H. No publication date, but an early edition as there is no mention of the First World War. Map endpapers, decorated title page. Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w maps, plus 10 plates depicting coins. "(T)he present volume deals with the countries of Asia, whose history and geography, and whose possibilities great and grave, are alike reflected in the maps and charts that follow. When Queen Elizabeth (I) granted to certain merchants of London a charter that gave them a roving commission to trade in the East Indies, she could not foresee the immense developments that were to rise from that adventurous commerce between east and west. The successive maps of India with their frontier changes mark the gradual advance of an old world toward the new one knit by powerful mutual ties to the Isle of Britain; and recently we have seen what it is to be hoped will open a greater era for those regions, marked by a return to the old captial of Delhi, and a resuming of ancient rites which first gained their symbolism in those lands. But Asia, as Japan has taught us and as China will undoubtedly teach us again, has her own destiny to bear out, apart from our European interests and politics; and it is in that aspect we need to study her on the lines laid down and made clear and positive in this volume. It is not the military records, the charts of mutinies and battle-fields, interesting as they are, which are alone important; but those showing the conditions, physical and climatic, of the country; the dispersion of the tongues, the sites of the old religions, the wealth and tillage of the earth with its fruits, grain and minerals, its rice fields and tea plantations; the prevalance of rain, sun and trade-winds; and the course of the sea-roads that affect its human and industrial life...In this Asian Atlas, of small dimensions as it requires to be to fit its pocket, Irkutsk in the north, 'far Mandalay', the details of the East and West Indies, the route of Marco Polo, coasts like the Carnatic, towns like Lucknow and Cawnpore, Lhasa, 'the Forbidden City' of Tibet, and Matsuye, the old capital of Idzumo, which Lafcadio Hearn describes, all have their record." Includes "A Brief Survey of the Coinages of Asia from the Earliest Times to the Present Day" by J. Allan, "A Gazetteer of Towns and Places in Asia having an Historic Interest" and an Index. Slight fading to spine color, small are of minor color loss on top of text block, very light browning to edges of text block, minor edge wear, small dplit in paper of front inside hinge, browning to pages 110/111 due to laid in newspaper clipping, slight browning to free endpapers - tiny foxing mark on front endpaper. ISBN 0385257252 "The first war of the century, which took Canadian soldiers to South Africa, and the last, which sent them to Korea, bracket the tumultuous ye ars of the (20th) century's first half like bookends on the shelf of history. They have a good deal in common, these two minor conflicts, whose chronicles pale when compared to the bloodbaths of the two world wars. Canada's wartime days a r e l o n g p ast, and for many, the scars of war have healed. Vimy has been manicured clean, its pockmarked slopes softened by a green mantle of Canadian pines. Dieppe has reverted to a resort town, its beaches long since washed free of Canadia n bl o od . N ow a da ys, Canadians are proud of their role as Peacekeepers, from which they have gained a modicum of the international acclaim the nation has always craved, with precious little blood wasted in the process. In this monumental work , Pie rr e B er ton br in gs Canadian history to life once again, relying on a host of sources, including newspaper accounts and first-hand reports, to tell the story of these four wars through the eyes of the privates in the trenches, the generals a t th e f ront , a nd t he p oli tic ians and families back home. By profiling the interwar years, Berton traces how one war led to the next, and how the country was changed in the process. Illustrated with maps and line drawings, 'Marching as t o W ar' d escr ibes how the e xperi ence of war helped to bind Canada together as a nation and chronicles the transformation of Canada's dependence upon Great Britain and its slow emergence as an independent nation caught in a love-hate relationshi p wi th the Unit ed St ates ." 9 Cahill, Jack. WORDS OF WAR.
Toronto Deneau 1987 0888791461 / 9780888791467 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
246 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w map, photographs. "Jack Cahill, a senior reporter for 'The Toronto Star', was a one-man bureau in all parts of South East Asia. He witnessed the fall of Danang and was there when the Khmer Rouge conquered Cambodia. In what remains one of the most harrowing and human stories of that dramatic period, Cahill escaped from Saigon as one of the first 'boat people' aboard a decrepit refugee ship. 'Words of War' is populated with colourful characters, from the 19th century British and American newsmen, who covered wars in the Crimea, the Sudan, South Africa and America, to the modern day men and women who continue to risk their lives for a story in the age of telecommunications and computers. There are also courageous drivers, the officials, the bar girls, the veterans and the homeless children. In the end, there is only the bitter tragedy of war's victims. Cahill returned to Vietnam in 1986. He gives a haunting portrayal of that sad country today and the reactions of the first American veterans to meet their former enemies face to face since the war. (A) reporter's book, full of the frightening facts of war and the journalists who reported them first hand. It is a compelling, dramatic memoir of places and people that will never be forgotten."
