ARMISTICE 1918., Barclay, C.N., Brigadier.
4 Barclay, C.N., Brigadier. ARMISTICE 1918.
A.S. Barnes, New York, (1969).
155 pp, 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photos, maps. "After more than four years of the most fearful war in the world's history, the end came almost unexpectedly, with dramatic suddenness. At five o'clock on the morning of November 11, 1918, Marshal Foch and Admiral Wemyss, representing the Allies, concluded an armistice with German civil and military representatives. There had been a general expectation that the war would last well into 1919. The author...examines the various factors that led to the earlier conclusion of the war. He analyzes conditions in the summer of 1918 following Ludendorff's massive offensive in March...also probes the plans of the Central Powers, the Allies, and the American Expeditionary Forces, emphasizing the range of disagreements on the methods by which German could be defeated. He then goes on to consider the first and second phases of the Allied offensives of August 1918, which at last cracked German resistance. Finally the Armistice itself is studied in detail. The penultimate chapter, which comments on military operations, includes the bizarre account of the Kaiser's unheralded arrival in Holland..." Tiny marks and faint ghost marks on endpapers from old tape (removed), thin ink line smudge on page 117, a few pages with soft or full corner creases, slight bubbling to front pastedown. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, some faint writing indentations on front panel, two small closed tears. VG-/VG

13 Brown, Kingsley. Foreword by Dave McIntosh. BONDS OF WIRE: A MEMOIR.
Collins, Toronto, 1989, first edition.
267 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0002159724 B&w drawings. "On July 3, 1942, RCAF Bomber Pilot Kingsley Brown was shot down over Holland, and shortly afterwards incarcerated in Stalag Luft 3. He spent the next three years t here. When the gates slammed shut behind him, much to his surprise Brown found himself in a fascinating environment where hardship and trial were more than matched by the bizarre, the absurd and the comical. A seasoned raconteur, Brown brin g s t o l ife a whole array of unusual characters: Wally Floody, the indefatigable digger of tunnels and the engineer of the Great Escape; Hermann Glemnitz, the tough, good-humoured chief guard; and Christel Achtelik, the teenaged girl who spirite d th e c am p 's bean soup to beleaguered German troops in the last days of the Battle of Berlin. These remarkable adventures of a Canadian prisoner-of-war portray hope in the midst of dreary winters, wonderful cameraderie, and the imperishable b on ds th at lin ke d f riend and foe alike." 14 Buruma, Ian. Signed. MURDER IN AMSTERDAM. THE DEATH OF THEO VAN GOGH AND THE LIMITS OF TOLERANCE.
Penguin, New York, 2006, first edition (remainder mark).
278 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. SIGNED BY AUTHOR ON HALF TITLE PAGE. ISBN 1594201080 "It was the emblematic crime of our moment: On a cold November day in Amsterdam, an angry young Muslim man, Mohammed Bouyeri, the son of Moroc can immigrants, shot and killed the celebrated and controversial Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh, great-grandnephew of Vincent and iconic European provocateur, for making a movie with the Dutch politician Ayaan Hirsi Ali that 'insulted the prophet Mo h ammed'. After Bouyeri shot Van Gogh, he calmly stood over the body and cut his throat with a curved machete, as if performing a ritual sacrifice, which in a very real sense he was. The murder horrified quiet, complacent, prosperous Holland, a co un try that prides itself on being a bastion of tolerance, and sent shock waves across Europe and around the world. Shortly thereafter, Ian Buruma returned to the country of his childhood to investigate the event and its larger meaning. The result is his masterpiece: a book with the intimacy and narrative brilliance for which Buruma is renowned. (His) entire life's work has led him to this story - the tale of what happens when political Islam collides with the secular West, and tolerance f inds its limits."
