THE SENSE OF ORDER: A STUDY IN THE PSYCHOLOGY OF DECORATIVE ART., Gombrich, E.H.
3 Gombrich, E.H. THE SENSE OF ORDER: A STUDY IN THE PSYCHOLOGY OF DECORATIVE ART.
Oxford Phaidon 1980 0714817325 / 9780714817323 Second Impression. Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
411 pp, 10 3/4" H. Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour. "After an Introduction on Order and Purpose in Nature, which offers a novel approach to the study of pattern, the first chapters deal with the criticism of ornament, the cult of simplicity and the debates about design in Victorian England, in which such eminent critics as Ruskin, Owen Jones and Gottfried Semper made a permanent contribution to theoretical issues. The craftsman's practice of pattern-making is studied as a response to the challenges of material, of geometrical laws and psychological constraints, after which the author examines the perception and the effects of visual orders in the light of recent research. The relation-ship between psychology and history is the theme of four final chapters which deal with the tenacity of ornamental traditions, their modification by the changing styles and fashions of different periods, the role of symbolism in the origin and the use of motifs, and the psychological roots of the grotesque, oscillating between magic and humour. An Epilogue reviews some of the analogies between the spatial orders of decorative design and the temporal patterns of the dance, of poetry and, notably, of music, not forgetting the 'kinetic art' of our century. This absorbing work, the fruit of a lifetime's interest in the most universal and yet strangely neglected manifestation of human creativity, is based on the Wrightsman Lectures given by the author in 1970 under the auspices of the Institute of Fine Arts of New York University." Very minor edge wear, minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling, one tiny tear archivally taped.

6 Moore, Lucy. AMPHIBIOUS THING: THE LIFE OF LORD HERVEY.
London Viking 2000 067087986X / 9780670879861 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
376 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). Colour plates. "Lord Hervey was one of the most controversial figures of the Georgian age. The consummate courtier - strikingly handsome, elegant and witty - he was both the favourite of the Queen and right-hand man to Walpole. Painted by Hogarth, satirized by Fielding and Pope, and confidant of Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, Hervey counted among his friends and enemies some of the most brilliant men and women of the age. Yet for all his hard-won fame, there was a scandalous private side to Hervey. He was certainly a rake (rumour had it that he shared a mistress with the Prince of Wales), but such behaviour was quite normal among the eighteenth-century aristocracy. Less usual, however, was his ten-year affair with another man. From the outset, Hervey was fascinated by Stephen Fox. His engaging, delightfully witty letters reveal the depth of their passion for one another, and the lengths to which they were driven in order to escape detection. Finally, theirs became an 'open secret', one of many factors that was to contribute to Hervey's downfall. In this entertaining and wonderfully observed biography, Lucy Moore brings to life an entire age, with its shimmering artifice and its poisonous deceit, its highly wrought melodrama and its grand passions." Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top of spine.

THE HANDPRINTED BOOKS OF LEONARD AND VIRGINIA WOOLF AT THE HOGARTH PRESS, 1917-1932., Rhein, Donna E.
8 Rhein, Donna E. THE HANDPRINTED BOOKS OF LEONARD AND VIRGINIA WOOLF AT THE HOGARTH PRESS, 1917-1932.
Ann Arbor, Michigan UMI Research Press 1985 0835716945 / 9780835716949 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+
166 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w reproductions. "The purpose of this study is to give an annotated bibliography of the books and discuss the authors whose words were handprinted by the Woolfs. It has proved easiest to investigate the books and understand how their authors came to be connected with the Press by considering them in groups based on their relationship with the Woolfs. Of course the Woolfs printed their own works and that of their friends. They also printed work by people they admired and wanted to encourage in their endeavor to reach the public eye. Since most of these people developed careers of some note, it is possible to give an indication of their relationships to the Woolfs and what these particular books meant to them at the time of publication." From the Introduction. Contents: List of Illustrations; Preface; Introduction; The Press in the Lives of the Woolfs; Books by the Woolfs; Books by Friends; Books by Acquaintances; Books by Worthy Unknown; The Woolfs and the Book Arts Tradition; Illustrations of the Books in Order of Publication; Appendix A: List of Handprinted Books in Order of Publication; Appendix B: List of Handprinted Books in Order by Author; Notes; Bibliography; Index. THE WORST JOBS IN HISTORY: TWO THOUSAND YEARS OF MISERABLE EMPLOYMENT., Robinson, Tony and Willcock, David.
9 Robinson, Tony and Willcock, David. THE WORST JOBS IN HISTORY: TWO THOUSAND YEARS OF MISERABLE EMPLOYMENT.
London Boxtree 2004 0752215337 / 9780752215334 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
224 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with photographs and reproductions. "Tony Robinson has set out to investigate life in the underbelly of history. Whether it's swilling out the crotch of a knight's soiled armour after the Battle of Agincourt, risking his neck on a bleak cliff collecting guillemot eggs or, as 'Groom to the Stool', going to places where none of Henry VIII's six wives would venture - Tony endures it all to get to the bottom (quite literally) of the story. Covering the Roman invasion to the reign of Queen Victoria, Tony uncovers how - behind all the great men and women who have made the headlines - there has been an unseen army undertaking hard, dangerous and unpleasant work. The very names 'Powder Monkey', 'Seeker of the Dead' and 'Spit Boy' underline the fact that the past is a different and fairly disgusting country. The Gunpowder Plot draws Tony to the role of the 'Saltpetre Man' who collected human waste for its nitrate content to turn into gunpowder. In the same vein, he looks at some of the worst jobs behind the building of the great medieval cathedrals and at the dire conditions on Nelson's 'Victory' where the most common form of retirement was being sewn into your hammock with a couple of cannon balls and dropped over the side. Then there's the impact of the Industrial Revolution, a source of wealth and power for the few, but a cornucopia of lousy jobs for the many." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light waviness to fore-edge of textblock. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling and minor rubbing.
