Toronto Natural Heritage / Dundurn 2008 1550028634 / 9781550028638 First Edition Soft Cover Fine
310 pp, square large 8vo (9" x 9"). B&w photographs, reproductions, maps. "(A) treasure trove of stories - 'glorious and not-so-glorious' - embodying the history of the city of Belleville (Ontario) and its beautiful surroundings. Gerry Boyce, the dean of the area's historians, has done a masterful job of pulling together the best of Belleville's storied past, episode by episode, decade by decade: here one learns about the Native roots of the place, its debatable 'discovery' by Champlain, its hot-headed pre-Confederation politics, its involvement in Spiritualism in the 1850s and the spread of prostitution in the Victorian 1870s. Moving forward from the days of Susanna Moodie and Mackenzie Bowell, it provides an entertaining and probing stroll through the past 110 years, reminding readers of such national events as the sensational 1959 victory by the Belleville MacFarlands over the Russians at the World Amateur Hockey Championship in Prague; and then, less well known, the financially crippling news of secret payments made to the players. Gerry Boyce (reminds) us that our history, be it local or national, is much more lively and intriguing than we often realize." Michael Peterman . Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - clean and bright.

THE MEANING OF PUCK: HOW HOCKEY EXPLAINS MODERN CANADA., Dowbiggin, Bruce.
10 Dowbiggin, Bruce. THE MEANING OF PUCK: HOW HOCKEY EXPLAINS MODERN CANADA.
Key Porter, Toronto, 2008, first edition.
232 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 9781554700417 "In a series of essays that is a road trip across the nation's cultural landscape, (Dowbiggin) shows how the national passion for hockey reflects - or deflects - the issues of globalization, regionalism, anti-Americanism, militarism, violence, racism and greed. Why are Canadians, for instance, such strenuous advocates of pacifism and non-militarism around the world while simultaneously embracing - and promoting - the world's most vicious and violent brand of hockey? As the legion of apologists for Todd Bertuzzi's thuggish play dramatize, it's not the Americans who popularize violence in hockey. It's us. Dowbiggen tries to come to terms with the absurd hero worship of The Great One. Or why Canadians so smugly spoof American ignorance while making a 'cultural' icon of Don Cherry. Is it because in a nation without rules or standards he still stands for something, however distasteful? (He) conducts an autopsy on the essentially permanent futility of the Toronto Maple Leafs and shows how the team's declining fortunes mirror the shift in power and influence from Ontario to the West, particularly Alberta. As fans outside Ontario chafe at the Toronto- centrism of 'Hockey Night in Canada', they seek a new locus of hockey influence. Dowbiggin explores questions such as: Why the Vancouver Canucks are the new frontier? What do you mean the Montreal Canadiens are owned by an American? Why is hockey such a safe place for characters such as Alan Eagleson, Graham James and David Frost to hide? And why is it so hard to get them out once they've attached themselves to power? Most of all: Why does the sniff of the Canadian jock have such a hypnotic effect on our culture? 'The Meaning of Puck' is a funny, acidic, irreverent, argumentative and often infuriating but always thought-provoking look into the fabric of a nation straining to keep old traditions alive and incorporate new national myths." Dust jacket has very minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds. Fine/Near Fine

12 Ferguson, John. With Stan & Shirley Fischler. THUNDER AND LIGHTNING.
Scarborough, Ontario Prentice-Hall 1989 0139206469 / 9780139206467 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
334 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "If the Montreal Canadiens had a weakness in the early 1960s it was size. Too often, small Canadiens were being battered against the boards and checked out of action. In 1963, that problem was solved, and a big part of the solutions was John Ferguson. Chosen out of the American Hockey Leauge by Frank Selke, Ferguson showed up in training camp with a reputation as a good hockey player, and one who hadn't lost a fight in the AHL. He lived up to his reputation during his first game in Boston. At the opening faceoff, he got into a fight with Ted Green, which he won. Not only that, Ferguson proceeded to score twice in that game, which ended in a 4-4 tie. John Ferguson played for the Canadiens for eight years, until he retired in 1971. During those years, he shared in five Stanley Cups, played five hundred games, scored 145 goals and 158 assists, and spent 1214 minutes in the penalty box. An extremely aggressive forward, he acted as the club's policeman and extended his dislike of opposing players off the ice. Ferguson retired from the Canadiens in 1971 to begin a new career as a businessman. He came back to hockey as Coach and General Manager of the New York Rangers in 1976, then as General Manager of the Winnipeg Jets, and finally as General Manager of Team Canada. Having retired once more from hockey, (he) will dedicate himself to his second great sporting love, as President of The Windsor Raceway." Minor wrinkling to top/bottom of text block, tiny dent to top edge of front board. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing, minor edge browning light crease down front flap.

"One of the most compelling figures ever to lace on a pair of skates, Carl Brewer was a gifted skater and stickhandler, renowned for his ability to control the pa ce of a game and to goad opponents into costly errors. His talents made him an NHL all-star and one of the cornerstones of a Toronto Maple Leaf dynasty. But he was also a loner playing a team game, a free spirit in an era when players were expec t e d not to make waves. Teammates and management alike wrote him off as an eccentric, an enigma. At what should have been the peak of his career, he abandoned the game, embarking on a lifelong search for meaning in his life. Along the way he met S us an Foster, and together they would discover the purpose. (This is) the story of how Carl and Susan successfully battled the hockey establishment over the issue of player pensions. 211 pp, 9 1/4" H. Inscribed on title page: "Best Wishes Rob / Paul Henderson". B&w photographs. "(Paul Henderson) tells the story of the first Canada-Soviet Union series that kept Canadians riveted to their radios and televisions. Although the 1972 series was the highlight of his career, (he) has a lot more to tell. As a Detroit Red Wing, he played with such greats as Gordie Howe, Alex Delvecchio, and Ted Lindsay and experienced the heartache of being on the losing side in two Stanley Cup finals. Dealt to the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1968, he found himself on the ice with the team that had won the Leaf's last Cup the previous year, skating alongside Dave Keon, Tim Horton, George Armstrong, and Ron Ellis. Participating in one of the game's golden eras, Henderson had the privilege of locking horns with the likes of Phil Esposito, Bobby Orr, and Bobby Hull. And, like Hull, he, too, jumped to the World Hockey Association, where he witnessed the arrival of Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, and a new breed of superstar. Finally, Henderson describes the difficult transition he and all professional athletes must face when retirement inevitably comes." 18 Kinsella, W.P. TWO SPIRITS SOAR: THE ART OF ALLEN SAPP - THE INSPIRATION OF ALLAN GONOR.
Toronto Stoddart 1990 0773724273 / 9780773724273 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Allen Sapp.
134 pp, oblong large 8vo (9 1/4" H x 11 15/16" D). Profusely illustrated with colour reproductions of the artist's work and b&w photographs. "(C)elebrates the distinctive talent of the Canadian painter Allen Sapp, a Cree from Saskatchewan, and his relationship with Dr. Allan Gonor, mentor and friend. Sapp specializes in paintings depicting native life as he remembers it on the Red Pheasant Reserve near North Battleford, with subjects ranging from social activities and farming chores to full-dress ceremon-ies. These remarkable examples of Canadian art might never have existed were it not for Dr. Gonor, a man of uncommon insight who early recognized Sapp's ability and encouraged him to paint from his own experience rather than trying to copy other artists' modes of expression. Sapp's career flourished after Gonor's excellent advice and support in the generous style of the traditional artist's patron. The result: finely detailed paintings richly evocative of life in a close-knit community, full of warmth and nostalgia. In the text, W.P. Kinsella, a fiction writer well known for his attraction to native Canadian subjects, compares his own passion for writing, as he was growing up, with Sapp's similar youthful dedication to art. Kinsella then explores the productive relationship between Sapp and Gonor to provide a very satisfying picture of this unique and important painter's life and work."
