Seaham, Durham The People's History 2000 1902527321 / 9781902527321 First Edition Soft Cover Very Good
128 pp, 9 7/16" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. " 'Our Village' reflects the pains and joys of the people of the Durham Coalfield during a period of drastic change. It is a selection from a series of community publications the author has been involved in over the last 20 years. The general idea behind all these projects has been to let the people speak for themselves in conversation and in their songs and poems. Mixed with over 130 vivid photographs of their local communities, what comes across is a passionate, and often agonising, account of the social upheaval County Durham has experienced. The memories, poems and photographs will interest and enthuse young and old alike. There is gloom aplenty but also wit and vitality in what people have to say. From the banks of the Derwent to the Weardale hills, from the beaches of Easington to proud Westoe, they tell their tales and laugh and cry." 5 Barr, Luke. PROVENCE, 1970: M.F.K. FISHER, JULIA CHILD, JAMES BEARD, AND THE REINVENTION OF AMERICAN TASTE.
New York Clarkson Potter 2013 0307718344 / 9780307718341 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
309 pp, 8 1/2" H. "In the winter of (1970), more or less coincidentally, six iconic culinary figures, including Julia Child, James Beard, and M.F.K. Fisher, found themselves together in the South of France. They cooked and ate and talked late into the night about the future of food in America, the meaning of taste, and the limits of snobbery. The pioneering food writer M.F.K. Fisher had arrived on an ocean liner, traveling in grand style. The already iconic Julia Child, star of the television show 'The French Chef', was returning to her vacation home, La Pitchoune, wondering just how 'French' she wanted to be. Simone Beck, Child's coauthor of the seminal 'Mastering the Art of French Cooking', was there, too, at her family's estate. James Beard, meanwhile, was working on his most ambitious book, 'American Cookery', while enrolled at a nearby diet clinic. And the reclusive chef Richard Olney, whose first book, 'The French Menu Cookbook', had just been published, was living in Provence and pointing the way to a new kind of culinary bohemianism. Here were America's leading voices in the food world - joined by renowned cookbook editor Judith Jones - all converging in Provence, and yet, incredibly, some were meeting for the first time. Drawing in large part on M.F.K. Fisher's detailed journals and letters, her grandnephew has re-created what is in retrospect a pivotal moment - when the democratization of cooking and taste became part of the national conversation in America. His dramatic retelling of those few weeks in the hills above the Cote d'Azur conjurs conversations and meals, arguments and unspoken rivalries." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, several very small dents on bottom edge of boards. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, patches of very light browning, a few very small light stins on fron panel, faint liquid mark at top 2" of front flap fold.

Collins, London, 1967.
153 pp, 7 3/8" H, hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "Enid Blyton did not mean to write this book. There were already four books in this Mystery Series, all about Roger, Diana, Snubby and his mad little spaniel - four books in which th e circus boy, Barney, was seeking his unknown father. In 'The Rubadub Mystery' he found him - and that was to be the end of the series. But the lovers of these 'Barney Books' begged so hard for yet another, that there was nothing for it b u t t o w r i te a fifth. So here it is, sure of a tremendous welcome, for here are all the well-loved characters again - with Loony the spaniel and Miranda the monkey, madder and more comical than ever! A winter holiday down at Rat-at-Tat Hou se , in th e s no w- cl ad hills, cut off from everywhere - and mystery and adventure spring up out of the snow! Who came knocking at night! Whose were the mysterious footprints in the snow? What was the wandering Snowman? What was hidden in th e c el lar ? T hi s is ind eed a very strange mystery - an Enid Blyton Mystery which, as ever, will hold your attention from the first word to the last." 8 Charters, Dean. Introduction by Angela M. O'Connell. MOUNTIE, 1873-1973: A GOLDEN TREASURY OF THOSE EARLY YEARS.
Don Mills Collier-Macmillan 1973 029734207 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good+
253 pp, 10 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "1973 marks the centennial anniver- sary of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. (This book is) a pictorial tour of adventure through those glorious early days. One hundred years is not long when we are talking about history, but a glance at these photographs shows the phenomenal growth of Canada during that period. And the man who laid the groundwork for this phenomenal growth was the Mountie. Without his work of pacification, the task of settling and civilizing the Canadian west could not have been carried out. The photographers who took these pictures must have been imbued with the same spirit of adventure that motivated the Mountie. The proof is here. Wherever the men of the N.W.M.P. went, the photographers followed. The results of their work are here, a fitting tribute to the men of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police." Tiny soft bump at top corner of pages 163 to end of book, previous owner's small label on front pastedown, very faint tiny foxing marks on bottom of text block, minor wrinking at bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling - moderate on rear flap-fold, several edge tears (some with creases) archivally taped, light rubbing

William Heinemann/British Book Service (Canada), London/Toronto, (1953), Ist edition.
254 pp, 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. "...the story has as a background the hills and the Rocky Mountains of Alberta; in the foreground are the mining centre of Coaltown and, living in it, a young girl of nearly seventeen - not a fairytale heroine, but a delightful person, natural, impressionable and intensely alive. Her name is Maggy Mileris and she is the daughter of Lithuanian immigrants, for Coaltown is a 'little Europe' and contains no less than thirty-five different nationalities working and living there, not to mention the gypsies who come and go, and the pedlar, Eli Kharam. Like most communities, only a little more so, Coaltown is full of snobberies, and Maggy, who had never thought that nationality was important, soon finds that other people think it is..." THE GOLD CRUSADES: A SOCIAL HISTORY OF GOLD RUSHES, 1849-1929., Fetherling, Douglas.
14 Fetherling, Douglas. THE GOLD CRUSADES: A SOCIAL HISTORY OF GOLD RUSHES, 1849-1929.
Toronto Macmillan of Canada 1988 071592876 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good-
(259) pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, maps. "The first great international gold rush began in 1849 after news about spectacular discoveries in California leaked out to the rest of the world, setting off one of the largest peace-time migrations in history. The final one, using dog-teams as well as aircraft, took place in the wilderness of northwestern Ontario in the Roaring Twenties, when corporate manoeuvring had nearly eclipsed the fierce individualism so central to the idea of the gold rush. The period saw every type of person - saints and charlatans, nobles and peasants, plutocrats and radicals, Asians, Blacks and Europeans - racing off to the Rocky Mountains, Australia, South Africa or Alaska and the Yukon. As they gained cumulative force, the gold rushes produced certain stock characters: the happy-go-lucky millionaire, the golden-hearted prostitute, the aging veteran of some previous frontier search for one final fling. In every instance, the gold rush was not merely an anarchic type of economic development but a signal and informing event in the history of the host country. In nearly all cases, there was great tension between the forces of authority on the one hand and the miners' instinctual libertarianism on the other. Often the result was violence - followed by reform. (This book) throws new light on a popular subject and ties part of one country's history and folkore to that of the others." Small bump at each corner of boards, slight bump at top of spine, very light browning at bottom edge of spine. Dust jacket has wrinkling and light wear at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, two tiny edge tears archivally taped.

Unpaginated (32 pp), 11 1/4" H. Colour illustrations. "Long ago, when immortals walked the green hills of Ireland, Caer's father, King Ethal, cast a terrible spell on her. Lest she marry a mortal man, Caer was condemned to live every second year in the form of a swan. At first she didn't mind drifting on the cold, empty waters of Loch Bel Dracon, but one day a young man came to the lake's shore, and she fell in love with him. Could she win the heart of Aengus? Or was Caer destined to be lonely forever? Ted Nasmith's detailed illustrations, based on ancient Celtic signs and symbols, enrich Joanne Findon's haunting retelling of a medieval Irish tale."
