2 Ansell, Mike, Colonel Sir. Foreword By H.R.H. The Prince Philip. SOLDIER ON: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY.
London Peter Davies 1973 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+ Inscribed By Author
180 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). **Inscribed on half title page: "G_____ A_____ Best wishes Mike Ansell Oct. 14th 1973". B&w plates. "In June, 1940, when Colonel Mike had just been awarded the D.S.O. and was the youngest Commanding Officer in the Army, disaster struck: he was blinded in a hail of bullets at St Valery. The way he has overcome this handicap, and other more heartbreaking losses, is the inspiring theme of this book. For Colonel Mike has never failed to 'soldier on' in the face of adversities that would have broken lesser men. Whether catching salmon on the Torridge in Devon, creating the beautiful garden at his home near Bideford, planning a new show-jumping course with his specially designed magnetic board, attending St Dunstan's reunions or sitting in his study typing this book, to everything he does Colonel Mike bring his own unique brand of enthusiasm and professionalism - just as he did before the war, when, for example, he organised the famous Trick Ride for his regiment, the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards, and show-jumped for England. Chairman of the British Show-Jumping Association and of the British Horse Society for some twenty-five years and now President of the British Equestrian Federation, he has done more than any other single man to make Britain one of the leading equestrian nations in the world, and to stimulate the ever-growing interest in riding as a competitive and leisure sport." Publishers' promotional material laid-in. Scattered tiny foxing marks on top third of both boards and on edges of text bkock, light wear at corners. Dust jacket has bee price-clipped, heavy creases at top corner of rear flap-fold, tiny foxing marks on top inside edge, some light edge wear/wrinkling, small closed tear on front hinge, small repair at top edge - archivally taped.

THE ROYAL SCOTS GREYS (THE 2nd DRAGOONS). FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES., Blacklock, Michael. Introduction by Lieut.-General Sir Brian Horrocks.
5 Blacklock, Michael. Introduction by Lieut.-General Sir Brian Horrocks. THE ROYAL SCOTS GREYS (THE 2nd DRAGOONS). FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES.
Leo Cooper, London, 1971, first edition.

Music for Regimental Quick March (The Garb of Old Gaul), Bugle Charge, and Regimental Quick March for Pipes & Drums (Highland Laddie). "At Waterlo o they charged the French shouting 'Scotland for ever!' and Sergeant Ewart captured the Eagle of the 45th French Regiment. As Napoleon exclaimed, 'Qu'ils sont terribles, ces chevaux gris', and he spoke from the heart: he was referring to t h e R o y a l Scots Greys. As it was at Waterloo, so it was at Balaclava where the Greys, as part of the Heavy Brigade, went through the Russians like a knife through butter; in South Africa, where they scattered the Boers like grass in the path of a sc yt he . T h e grey horses gave way to tanks in 1941 but the spirit of Sergeant Ewart lived on in the Second World War, and in no 'Grey' more so than Lt.-Col. Geoffrey Keyes, posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his daring raid on R omm el' s He adq uar te rs in North Africa. The story of the Royal Scots Greys - whether they are charging French, Russians or Germans as cavalry, or fighting in North Africa, Italy or North-West Europe in tanks - will stir the blood of every man who has e ver sold iere d a nd man y civilians besides." 7 Campey, Lucille H. WITH AXE AND BIBLE: THE SCOTTISH PIONEERS OF NEW BRUNSWICK, 1784-1874.
Toronto Natural Heritage 2007 1897045220 / 9781897045220 First Edition Soft Cover Fine
206 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs, reproductions, maps. "New Brunswick's enormous timber trade attracted the first wave of Scots in the late 18th century. As economic conditions in Scotland worsened, the flow of emigrants increased, creating distinctive Scottish communities along the province's major timber bays and river frontages. While Scots relied on the timber trade for economic sustenance, their religion offered another form of support, sustaining them in a spiritual and cultural sense. These two themes, the axe and the bible, underpin their story. Using wide-ranging documentary sources, includ-ing passenger lists and newspaper shipping reports, (this book) traces the progress of Scottish colon- ization and its ramifications for the province's early development. Who were these Scots? What factors caused them to select their various locations? What problems did they face? Were they successful pioneers? Why was the Scottish Church so important to them? In tracing the process of emigration, (the author) offers new insights on where Scots settled, their overall impact and the cultural legacy they left behind. (It) is the first fully documented account of Scottish emigration to New Brunswick." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - clean and bright.

THE BAGPIPE: THE HISTORY OF A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT., Collinson, Francis.

Routledge & Kegan Paul, London, 1975, first edition.
257 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0710079133 B&w illustrations. "....(a) fascinating full-length history of one of the world's most interesting and ancient musical instruments. The story begins in 3000 B.C. with the mouth-blown reed pipes, predecessor to the bagpipe. Mr Collinson looks at the history of this instrument as known in ancient Babylonia and Egypt, through the ancient Grecian Empire and Greece itself, to Rome and thence to Britain. He investigates the application of the bag principle to the mouth-blown pipes in Hellenic Egypt and Rome, and the first appearance of the bagpipe in Great Britain and Ireland in the eleventh or twelfth century. He describes the development of the bagpipe in the Br itish Isles, its rise and gradual waning, leaving the Scottish Highland bagpipe and the Northumbrian pipes as the sole survivors. Having traced its evolution, the book goes on to narrate the fortunes of the 'Great Highland Bagpipe' itself. T h i s i s an account which encompasses the Jacobite risings and Culloden, and the Disarming Act 1747, by which the use of the bagpipe was more or less proscribed. It covers the great music of Pibroch, in the hands of the MacCrimmons and other p ip er s, a n d co ntinues up to modern times. Appendices list the bagpipes of other countries and the materials used in the instrument's manufacture, and there is a comprehensive bibliography." "The landing site selected for the crew of Apollo 16 was in the lunar highland area of Descartes. NASA chose to send J ohn Young to command the fifth lunar landing mission. Young had as much or more flight experience than any other member of the astronaut corps. He had circumnavigated the moon on Apollo 10 and he had flown two Gemini missions. Young would late r g o on to be the first commander of the Space Shuttle. The Descartes landing site was chosen because it appeared to be of volcanic origin. If it was, it might reveal secrets about the origins of the Earth. For three days, Young and Duke embark ed on their rover, away from the Lunar Module 'Orion', through rugged landscapes, in search of the origins of our world. Meanwhile Ken Mattingly shot hundreds of photographs and probed the moon's magnetic field from the Command Module 'Casper'. Bac k on earth the political climate was beginning to turn against NASA and the remarkable risks and exploits undertaken by the crew of Apollo 16 went almost unnoticed by the American people. The three intrepid explorers and their spacecraft harv este d a we alth of new data about the Earth-Moon system in an almost flawless performance of skill and bravado. Compiled here are many important documents about the mission including the complete debriefing in the crew's own words." Interior - cl ean a nd tigh t with no previous ownership marks.
