"Antony Alpers has tried to discard all preconceived ideas and re-enter the world of the Polynesians as it was before Cook's arrival in 1769. By reconstructing their legends, myths, folktales and poetry in an immediate and convincing style he has let them speak for themselves. And in a long introduction that is a masterly compression of the Polynesians' whole way of life he cuts away our illusions and leaves us not only face to face with the islanders but with the way they saw themselves and the jewelled archipelagos in which they lived and sailed." Contains a preface, introduction and note on pronunciation and spelling, followed by groups of legends under the following headings: The Creation; The Heroes; Seven Ages in Thirteen Chants; The Marquesas, and Mangareva; Easter Island; Hawaiian Islands; Tongan Group; Samoa; Atolls and Outliers; New Zealand and the Chathams; 'From Darkness to Light'. It is the participant, the cowboy, who has excited both young and old for decades. Year in and year out, these men test their strength against the power of animals in such rodeo events as steer wrestling and bronc riding. Sometimes they are rewarded for their efforts by a winning time, but often they receive little more than the appreciative applause of an enthusiastic audience before heading down the road to the next rodeo. What motivates these men to keep up such a grueling schedule? What has kept the tradition alive for so long? Through the combined effort of a gifted writer and an expert photographer, the exciting and entertaining world of the rodeo cowboy comes alive." Minor edge wear. Dust jacket has very light rubbing, minor edge wrinkling - crease at bottom edge of rear flap.

12 Berton, Pierre. THE INVASION OF CANADA, 1812-1813.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1980 0771012357 / 9780771012358 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good+ Inscribed By Author
363 pp, 9 3/4" H. Pictorial endpapers, maps/battle plans. Inscribed on title page: "Pierre Berton / To Leon with my best wishes / Aug '85". "To America's leaders in 1812, an invasion of Canada seemed the best way to bloody John Bull's nose. It would, as Thomas Jefferson confidently predicted, be 'a mere matter of marching'. How could a nation of eight million fail to subdue a struggling colony of 300,000? Yet, when the campaign of 1812 ended on the bloody banks of the River Raisin, the only Americans left on Canadian soil were prisoners of war. Three American armies had been forced to surrender, and the British were in control of all of Michigan Territory and much of Indiana and Ohio. Drawing on personal memoirs and diaries as well as official dispatches, the author has been able to get inside the characters of the men who fought the war - the common soldier as well as the generals. (C)owards and heroes, flawed generals and bumbling bureaucrats, traitors, loyalists, war profiteers, military incompetents and geniuses. (T)he War of 1812, or more properly the myth of the war, served to give the new settlers (of Upper Canada) a sense of community and set them on a different course from that of their neighbours. The Canadian way of life, says Berton, has its roots in the invasion of Canada." Light toning to fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling; two tiny edge tears archivally taped; light browning on spine, flap-folds, top 1" of panels and top edge of flaps; several tiny dents on front hinge.

THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS SOCIAL HISTORY OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR., Bishop, James. Foreword by Lord Blake.
15 Bishop, James. Foreword by Lord Blake. THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS SOCIAL HISTORY OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR.
London Angus & Robertson 1982 0207148260 / 9780207148262 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
144 pp, 10 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w reproductions of photographs, drawings, advertisements. "The First World War, which claimed the lives of so many men on the battlefields of the Western Front, also profoundly affected the character and everyday life of the nation at home. It was the first 'total war' and the whole country contributed to the war effort. The unrelenting demands of the trenches eventually forced the Government to introduce conscription while, for those left behind, the state intervened more and more in the lives of its citizens. Hardships increased: food and fuel were in very short supply and rationing had to be imposed in 1916. The civilian population was also directly involved in the hostilities with the bombing raids of zeppelins and aeroplanes. But the war did bring some changes for the better. The salaried classes grew, working conditions improved and the war also helped liberate women who replaced men in factories and public services, and joined the armed forces. When the armistice finally came, in November 1918, Lloyd George promised 'a fit country for heroes to live in' - though the reality proved to be less Utopian. The Illustrated London News continued to publish throughout the First World War and was supplemented by The Illustrated War News. These magazines provided a vivid pictorial chronicle of contemporary events and enable us, today, to enter into the spirit of a bygone era. (The author) has written a fascinating and fully-documented account of these momentous years, complemented by over 200 pictures from the original issues." Light edge wear to boards. Dust jacket has one tiny edge tear, light foxing at top & bottom inside edges, very light edge wrinkling, a few tiny dents and faint line indentations on front panel.

18 Brown, Jane. LUTYENS AND THE EDWARDIANS: AN ENGLISH ARCHITECT AND HIS CLIENTS.
London Viking 1996 0670858714 / 9780670858712 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
276 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). "The great architect and his architecture are well known, but what about his patrons, his clients? Who were they? Why did they build? What did they pay for their buildings? From his earliest patrons, a stream of repressed gentlewomen of intelligence and means, through a galaxy of Edwardian heroes and villains, this book tells their stories. Some of them are famous, others unknown, except as Lutyen's clients: here are Herbert Jekyll, Jennie Churchill, J.M. Barrie, Hugh Lane, Victoria Sackville, lords, ladies, Souls, bankers, press barons, politicians, the beau monde of Edwardian England, as well as a schoolteacher who inherited a fortune and a prospering Bradford wool merchant. The complex networking of families and friends threads through the events and settings of Edwardian society, like a richly patterned embroidery. Everything of significance that Lutyens did had its roots in the Edwardian decade - and his clients turn out to be both the triumph and the tragedy of his career. (L)avishly illustrated with the human face of great architecture - sketches, drawings and photographs from family archives all over England." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, slight browning to spine, edge wrinkling - mainly at top edge.
