FOR VALOUR: THE AIR VCs., Bowyer, Chaz.
1 Bowyer, Chaz. FOR VALOUR: THE AIR VCs.
London Grub Street 1992 0948817577 / 9780948817571 Reprint Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
548 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. Of the 1,350 Victoria Crosses awarded since 1856, only 51 have been conferred on airmen. "Here, for the first time, are the complete and accurate biographies of each of those 51 men. Though primarily regarded as a British honour, of those 51 airmen, 16 were not British-born; coming from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Eire willingly to pledge their lives in Britain's cause during the two major world wars of this century. Resulting from several decades of private research on an international scale, and profusely illustrated, this book has undoubtedly become the standard reference work on the subject of air VCs. It also provides a lasting record of their lives and astonishing courage - a permanent tribute to every airman ever awarded a Victoria Cross." Very minor wrinkle at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light rubbing.

Penrith, Cumbria St. Patrick's Press 1982 095082870X / 9780950828701 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good- Very Good-
134 pp, 11 7/8" H. Map endpapers. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions, drawings. "(C)hronicles the significant aeronautical events which took place in the Cumbria, Dumfries and Galloway region from 1825 to 1914. The uninformed reader glancing at the topographical map may wonder as to what possible level of pioneering aviation activity could be sustained in a predominantly mountainous region where man is grossly outnumbered by sheep - yet between these years it was to encapsulate almost all aspects of man's aeronautical endeavour, from ballooning, parachuting, gliding, aircraft and airship construction to aero engine production. Cumbria is the birthplace of both British naval and civil marine aviation and for the first time the full exciting story is told aided by many previously unpublished documents and photographs." Small bump at top/bottom of spine and at bottom corner of both boards. Dust jacket has minor edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very light rubbing, a few tiny dents on rear panel/hinge.

HIGH ENDEAVOUR: THE LIFE OF AIR CHIEF MARSHAL SIR RONALD IVELAW-CHAPMAN, GCB, KBE, DFC, AFC., Ivelaw-Chapman, John. (Sir Ronald Ivelaw-Chapman.)
5 Ivelaw-Chapman, John. (Sir Ronald Ivelaw-Chapman.) HIGH ENDEAVOUR: THE LIFE OF AIR CHIEF MARSHAL SIR RONALD IVELAW-CHAPMAN, GCB, KBE, DFC, AFC.
London Leo Cooper 1993 0850523168 / 9780850523164 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
164 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs. "Sir Ronald Ivelaw-Chapman was a remarkable man who had the good fortune to be born in an era when his particular talents were allowed to develop to the full. Just old enough to take part in the earliest days of aerial combat in the First World War, he was in uniform until well after the jet engine had taken command of the skies. His son John, who has edited his memoirs, makes clear that Sir Ronald was a typical Edwardian English Gentleman. This, he explains, is vital to the understanding of the man. The moral precepts of the Edwardian era remained with Sir Ronald throughout his life, and if some of them seem stiff and outdated in these more relaxed days, they certainly sustained him throughout a long and adventurous career. The book not only covers the most vital years in the development of the RAF in which Sir Ronald played a significant part but is also packed with drama at high level. Not many Englishmen, let alone future Air Marshals, were ever under sentence of death at the orders of Sir Winston Churchill himself. Sir Ronald has been well served by his editor. His son is never blinded by filial respect and, as he served in the Royal Air Force himself, he is familiar with the Service background. He is also qualified to explain what it was that made his father and the military men of that generation a unique band of Happy Warriors whose loyalty and service to the British Crown is already a fading memory." Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, light rubbing, two tiny scuffs on spine.

7 Nijboer, Donald. Introduction by Air Vice-Marshal Ron Dick, RAF (Ret.) and Flying Officer Bill Cole, RCAF (Ret.). GUNNER: AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF WORLD WAR II AIRCRAFT TURRETS AND GUN POSITIONS.
Erin, Ontario Boston Mills 2001 1550463322 / 9781550463323 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+ Dan Patterson, photography.
160 pp, 12 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w with photographs, drawings/diagrams. "Through Dan Patterson's remarkable photography, we get to see, close up, the cramped, cold, exposed turrets that so many young men fought and died in. (The author) examines the role each aircraft played in the war, and veterans describe in spirited detail what it was like to fly and fight in the war's most renowned aircraft. For the first time in print, 'Gunner' reveals not just the turrets of such famous aircraft as the Lancaster and the B-17, but also the rarely seen gun positions of aircraft such as the German Me 410, the Italian S.M. 79 and the Russian Il-2 Shturmovik. Many of the featured aircraft saw battle and have been preserved or meticulously restored. This book allows us to imagine what it must have been like to be an air gunner in the Second World War. Book is Fine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wear/wrinkling, very minor rubbing.

8 Palmer, Henry R., Jr. THIS WAS AIR TRAVEL. A PICTORIAL HISTORY OF AERONAUTS AND AEROPLANES FROM THE BEGINNING TO NOW.
New York Bonanza 1962 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
208 pp, 10 3/4" H. "(H)ere in full nostalgic glory are the Farmans, Wrights, Dorniers, Sikorskys and Martins which created new thrills in a new industry out of man's struggle to fly. Palmer has built a rare book of adventure on the airways by presenting hundreds of (b&w) photographs from his collection which has taken him many years to assemble. With these is the story of development, told in a crisp, readable style with an appendix for the technically minded. Here are the gas bags and gyrocopters - the 'Char-a-banc' and 'City of Glasgow' - the first planes to pack the mail and the first to span the seas. You learn of the early German mosnters and the facts about Henry Ford's 'Tine Goose'. You find pictured the exteriors and interiors of airplanes that made one flight and of others still flying in these days of jets. You read about daring pilots and inventive genius." Appendix I: The Story of the Schneider Trophy Race. Appendix II: Technical Specifications. Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light rubbing on spine with some very light color loss, very light rubbing on panels.

175 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4"H). B&w photographs, cutaway, maps. "This the fascinating story of the discovery and subsequent unearthing of a Second World War Hurricane fighter aircraft. The book has two main parts. The first covers the author's introduction as a young schoolboy to a small piece of wreckage in the Essex coastal marshes. His early inquisitiveness leads to identification of the aircraft type and several years later to a recovery operation which retrieves the substanial remains from their muddy resting place. After a period of further investigation into the remains' identity, together with some initial preservation work, the aircraft is finally put on display at the Royal Air Force Museum, Hendon. The second part of the book attempts to recreate the sequence of events during the raid which led to the aircraft's loss." Slight cigarette odor, very small bump at top of rear hinge.
