WEAPONS FREE. THE STORY OF A GULF WAR HELICOPTER PILOT., Boswell, Richard. Foreword by General Sir Peter de la Billiere.
4 Boswell, Richard. Foreword by General Sir Peter de la Billiere. WEAPONS FREE. THE STORY OF A GULF WAR HELICOPTER PILOT.
Crecy, (Manchester, 1998).
216 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w and color photographs. "In September 1990 Richard Boswell was a newly qualified helicopter pilot in the Royal Navy, fresh out of flight school and flying one of the most potent fighting helicopters in the world - the Westland Lynx. The world was at his feet in every sense. Then, on the day he and his girlfriend decided to buy a house together, Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait. With less than 24 hours notice, Richard Boswell was onboard HMS Manchester and en-route to the Gulf and impending war. Once in the Gulf, HMS Manchester prepared for the seaborne invasion that most thought was inevitalbe. Boswell saw action against Iraqi forces, protecting Allied ships and sinking a number of Iraqi gunboats. After the liberation of Kuwait, he flew extensively around the devastated country, when his duties included a spell as pilot for Sir Peter de la Billiere. But his story does not end there. After returning to the UK , Boswell became an instructor and also indulged his passion for flying home-built aircraft, a passion that led to the accident that nearly killed him and ended his days as a Navy pilot. The portrayal of the battle to rebuilt his shattered life is every bit as graphic as his wartime experiences in the Gulf." Minor wrinkling at top of spine - very light at bottom. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at bottom of spine. VG+/VG+

THE QUEEN'S FLIGHT: FIFTY YEARSOF ROYAL FLYING., Burns, Michael, ed. Foreword by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh.
5 Burns, Michael, ed. Foreword by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. THE QUEEN'S FLIGHT: FIFTY YEARSOF ROYAL FLYING.
Poole Blandford 1986 0713718889 / 9780713718881 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
160 pp, large 8vo (9 15/16" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "Carrying the Royal Family by air is a unique job and to do it, there is a unique flying unit. Now fifty years old, The Queen's Flight of the Royal Air Force operates to probably the highest standards of any organisation in the world of aviation. Their bright red helicopters, Andovers and now BAe 146s are a familiar sight on Royal occasions, their punctuality and reliability taken for granted. The effort which goes into maintaining those standards, and into assuring the Royal Family's safety and comfort in the air, is the fascinating subject of this fully authorised book. Behind the aircrew is the back-up team in Operations, the engineers, the administrative staff, the ground support for the helicopters, the stewards and the security staff - they all play their part, and they all find a place in this book. The history of the Flight (and indeed of Royal flying, which goes back to July 1917) is also recounted both in narrative form and in cameo reminiscences from ex-members of the Flight; these include Brian Trubshaw, later Concorde's test pilot. With 150 photographs to illustrate the text, the result is a rare glimpse behind the royal scene, which will intrigue anyone with an interest in aviation." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light wrinkling/soft creassing at top edge - mainly on rear panel.

177 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "(R)econstructs America's first era of manned flight and brings back to life the famous and less-known aviators who became the nation's heroes: Charles Lindberg, whose achievement was the great event of the 1920s - Amelia Earhart, one of the many women 'aces' (the aviation industry encouraged women because, as pilot Louise Thaden put it, 'If a woman can handle a plane, the public thinks it must be 'duck soup' for men.') - Calbraith P. Rogers, who made the first transcontinental flight, surviving a dozen crashes, a broken arm and collarbone, and a score of wounds caused by the metal fragments of an exploded engine - and many others. The book provides a vivid picture of America in the first half of the century - its aspirations and concerns - as expressed in the exuberant and often utopian response to a major new technology." Arms & Armour, London, 1989, first edition.
144 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0853688362 B&w photographs, maps, drawings. "In this carefully structured explanatory volume, the author charts the history of the defence of Britain and the threats it has faced, befo re discussing the constituents of home defence policy, from the role of the armed forces, reservist units, police and local government, to the warning and monitory systems available, the means by which key points would be protected and the t r a i n i n g undertaken by those involved to maintain a state of readiness. As we enter an era where many previously perceived threats are thought to be reducing, the need for vigilance and preparation has not yet been removed. Whether, as has b ee n pr op os ed , f uture home defence practices become interwoven with an all hazards approach to the subject - where defence facilities could switch to non military emergencies and disasters - or the status quo is maintained, the protection of th e c ou ntr y a nd its p eo ple should be studied outside the boundaries of political debate and beyond biased viewpoints. This volume will benefit reasoned discussion and advance knowledge of this crucial subject." Very light wrinkling at top /bot tom of spin e, s lig ht w avi nes s to fore-edge of textblock. Toronto Queen's Printer 1984 0774389648 / 9780774389648 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
668 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "The OPP came into existence (in 1909) with a total strength of fifty-one men, of whom forty-four were constables deployed across the vast province. By the end of World War I in 1918, only twenty-six constables were still serving with the force, but returning veterans were sought for enlistment with the provincials and the force grew, assuming every-increasing responsibilities for policing the province. Liquor law enforcement during the rumrunning days of the 1920s, and the creation of a highway patrol in 1930 played major parts in the evolution of the provincial police. The story of the OPP includes tales of murder, sabotage, corruption, and political influences. There were relief expeditions to the north in the wake of devastating forest fires, and confrontations with hoboes, harvesters, and loafers. Violent crimes, jail-breaks, war services, and industrial disputes all had to be contended with, and not a few members of the provincial police were killed in the performance of their duties over the years. 'Hepburn's Private Army' and 'Drew's Gestapo' gave rise to much criticism of the provincials, and embarrassing Royal Commissions did little to enhance the image or the morale of Ontario's finest. Despite the challenges to its continued existence, the OPP has emerged today as one of the finest, best equipped, and most brilliantly led police forces in the world." Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top edge..
