WEAPONS FREE. THE STORY OF A GULF WAR HELICOPTER PILOT., Boswell, Richard. Foreword by General Sir Peter de la Billiere.
3 Boswell, Richard. Foreword by General Sir Peter de la Billiere. WEAPONS FREE. THE STORY OF A GULF WAR HELICOPTER PILOT.
Crecy, (Manchester, 1998).
216 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w and color photographs. "In September 1990 Richard Boswell was a newly qualified helicopter pilot in the Royal Navy, fresh out of flight school and flying one of the most potent fighting helicopters in the world - the Westland Lynx. The world was at his feet in every sense. Then, on the day he and his girlfriend decided to buy a house together, Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait. With less than 24 hours notice, Richard Boswell was onboard HMS Manchester and en-route to the Gulf and impending war. Once in the Gulf, HMS Manchester prepared for the seaborne invasion that most thought was inevitalbe. Boswell saw action against Iraqi forces, protecting Allied ships and sinking a number of Iraqi gunboats. After the liberation of Kuwait, he flew extensively around the devastated country, when his duties included a spell as pilot for Sir Peter de la Billiere. But his story does not end there. After returning to the UK , Boswell became an instructor and also indulged his passion for flying home-built aircraft, a passion that led to the accident that nearly killed him and ended his days as a Navy pilot. The portrayal of the battle to rebuilt his shattered life is every bit as graphic as his wartime experiences in the Gulf." Minor wrinkling at top of spine - very light at bottom. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at bottom of spine. VG+/VG+

WHO KILLED THE CANADIAN MILITARY?, Granatstein, J.L.
5 Granatstein, J.L. WHO KILLED THE CANADIAN MILITARY?
Toronto Phyllis Bruce / HarperFlamingo 2004 0002006758 / 9780002006750 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
250 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). "With tragic helicopter crashes and out-of-date equipment, our military lurches towards irrelevance as our politicians dither. Our personnel are stretched far too thinly and are ill-prepared for the battlefield or increasingly dangerous peacekeeping. In truth, we rank 34th among nations in the provision of UN peacekeeping troops. And since 9/11 and the Iraq War, the United States is seriously re-evaluating our ability to defend our half of North America against terrorism. J.L. Granatstein argues that we are all too willing to hide behind anti-American sentiment, while ignoring the reality that we Canadians have failed our military. Who are the killers of the Canadian army, navy and air force? Granatstein fingers a series of governments since the Second World War who have never understood our military heritage and who have drained military expenditures for years. From Pierre Trudeau to Brian Mulroney to Jean Cretien, (this book) is a catalogue of prime ministers who have never supported adequate military spending. But Granatstein also places blame on ordinary Canadians who have allowed such changes to take place while clinging to the myth that we are the ultimate global peacekeepers. How can we expect the men and women of the Canadian forces to risk their lives for us when we are not prepared to protect and support them in turn? Here is an articulate and impassioned argument for a well- trained, well-funded military so that we can take our place among those who defend freedom in this century." Minor rubbing on boards, light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling.

TAB, Blue Ridge Summit, PA, 1991, first edition.
160 pp, 11" H, soft cover. ISBN 0830630783 B&w and colour photographs, maps. "During the air campaign of Operation Desert Storm, the only thing more incessant than the bombing was the technically inaccurate reporting of the news media. This unfo rtunate dissemination of erroneous information led to misconceptions about what was happening in the most unique chapter in the history of aerial combat. Here, for the first time, is an accurate, close-up, and detailed look at the high-tech war f a r e played out in the skies over Iraq and Kuwait. Using terminology anyone can understand, (the author) explains the concepts and strategies that were used to plan and execute the most successful air campaign in history. Kinzey provides a wea lt h of i nformation, including: How the air campaign was actually planned and carried out; All of the major types of aircraft used by the U.S. Air Force, Navy, Marines, and Army; Aircraft armament, with a detailed look at the missiles and precisio n-g ui ded mu nitions or 'smart bombs' that were used with such effectiveness; The Tomahawk, or TLAM cruise missile; Each of the eight aircraft carriers that participated in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm; The tactics used to find and des troy th e Sc ud m issiles; The air-to-air victories by the coalition aircraft (including a complete list of confirmed kills); Why the Iraqi Air Force 'ran for the border' instead of posing a threat to coalition forces; Why the news media made so ma ny te chni cal m istak es while trying to report on the war effort; The real reason why the B-1 bomber and other combat aircraft were not used in Operation Desert Storm." 9 Macleish, William H. OIL AND WATER: THE STRUGGLE FOR GEORGES BANK.
Boston Atlantic Monthly Press 1985 0871130076 / 9780871130075 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
304 pp, 8 1/2" H. "Georges Bank, 20,000 square miles of turbulent shoal water off Nantucket, is one of the richest fishing grounds in the world, its depths populated by cod, haddock, flatfish, and scallops. Until recently it was a gathering place for immense fishing trawlers of all nations. Then the Bank also became a bone of contention for explorers in oil, pitting the great multinational companies against one another, to say nothing of federal and state governments, jostling for their share of offshore oil revenues. Georges has long been the subject of dispute between the United States and Canada, and in the fall of 1984 the International Court of Justice in the Hague awarded a large portion of the Bank to Canada. Oil-lease sales were scheduled - and cancelled. Fishermen protested to their political representatives, who protested to their governments. Over the storm-lashed and fecund waters of Georges Bank, William MacLeish has travelled many times - by trawler, by helicopter, by scientific research vessel, by airplane, and by scallop boat. His pages bring us the scientists, the fishing people, politicians, lawyers, and oilmen connected with Georges Bank." Book is slightly cocked, has minor soiling on top of text block, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine - bump at top of front hinge. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, a few small light scuff marks, light soiling/rubbing on rear panel.

Dundurn, Toronto, 2008, first edition.
171 pp, square soft cover (8" x 8"). B&w photographs. ISBN 9781550028515 "A crab boat off Newfoundland catches fire, and a dangerous rescue is undertaken by helicopter. A child goes missing in a New Brunswick forest, and a desperate hunt is mounted. A climber tumbles 70 feet down the side of a mountain in British Columbia, and a dangerous long-line rescue is attempted. A commercial helicopter crashes in Nunavut, and a search and rescue team braves a savage snowstorm to save the pilot. (This book) features the above thrilling accounts and many more from across the country, past and present. Its heroes are to be found in the RCMP, city police forces, the Canadian military, and among all the rescue workers and specialists of the C anadian Coast Guard - volunteers, too, risk injury and even death to help others. Sidebars highlight the equipment search and rescue teams use, how search dogs are trained, how long-line rescues work, how navy divers are making a difference in the deserts of Afghanistan, and the meaning of terms such as emergency position-indicating radio beacons, Maydays, datum lines, and much more." Although catalogued as for the younger reader, this book gives an interesting overview of Canadian search and rescue operations for most levels of reader. BRAVO TWO ZERO., McNab, Andy.
11 McNab, Andy. BRAVO TWO ZERO.
Bantam, London, 1993, reprint.
374 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 059303421X Colour and b&w photographs, drawings. "On the night of 22 January 1991, at a remote airfield in Saudi Arabia, under cover of darkness and in conditions on utmost secrecy, ei ght members of the SAS regiment boarded a helicopter that was to infiltrate them deep behind enemy lines. Their mission, under the command of Sergeant Andy McNab, was to sever the underground communication link between Baghdad and northwest I r a q , a nd to seek and destroy mobile Scud launchers before Israel was provoked into entering the war. Their call-sign: Bravo Two-Zero. Each man laden with fifteen stone of equipment, they patrolled 20 km across flat desert to reach their objec ti ve a nd fi nd a hiding place before first light. Within days, their location was compromised. The Iraqis attacked with armour, and after a fierce firefight the patrol was forced to escape and evade on foot to the Syrian border, 120 km to the nor thw est . T hat first night, in pitch darkness and weather cold enough to freeze diesel fuel, they covered 85 km - farther than two marathons. In the desperate days that followed, though stricken by hypothermia and other injuries, the patrol ' went bal list ic '. Fo ur men were captured. Three died. Only one escaped. But in their wake lay 250 Iraqi dead and wounded. For Andy McNab and the other survivors, however, the worst ordeals were yet to come. Delivered to Baghdad, they were tort ured with a s ava gery and relentlessness for which not even their intensive SAS training had prepared them. This book is a breathtaking account of Special Forces soldiering in all its strength, ingenuity and aggression. It is also a chronic le of super human cou rage , end urance and dark humour in the face of overwhelming odds." Very light browning to pages and edges of text block. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds. Very Good/Very Good
